oh how silly.. very stupid. rolleyes

she is completely missing the point,

nobody is talking about violating the rights off the official released material, official dvd's and official cd albums (those with an "FBI warning" she is referring to). No real fan is copying this material afaik.

Of course fans should support Prince and the current record company, and buy stuff like that, the official music. (I myself has been supporting Prince and I did buy all the official music back from 1983 - to present, I guess I have spent on Prince's music: around $ 10,000 - around Dkr. 50,000 - over the years, 1983-2014!)..

However:

what THIS is about isn't about violating the copyrights of the official stuff..., what this is all about, is the UNOFFICIAL stuff, you can't buy this from the record companies, the music business, she's talking about.

Prince is trying what he can to kill a very healthy fanculture, every other acts/ bands/ artists (most of them), in the industry are accepting fan videos on YouTube, and accepting the fanculture's needs for UNOFFICIAL recordings.

She's misunderstood everything this is all about, how embarrassing for her, imho. confused

To some extent I agree with Sharon as to the reason why the music industry is shrinking, but also, one of the other MAIN reasons is that the QUALITY of music over the past 10-15 years has been, for want of a better word, total shit!! I cant remember the last time I actually went into a record store to actually slap a new CD on the counter top to buy(and that goes for buying on Amazon as well), cos, to be honest, THERE IS NOTHING NEW AND EXCITING TO BUY!! And Sharon is to blame by being a judge on one of these God awful singing reality competition shows!! All we have now is Justin Beebo, and One fucking Direction, who in my mind SHOULD ALL BE STILL IN SCHOOL AND DOING THEIR HOMEWORK!!! Except for performances by Paul McCartney/Ringo Star, Metallica, and the Supergroup at the end, the rest of the Grammies this past weekend was deplorable!!! Music now has reached the thin end of the wedge, with no talent, no longevity, no musicianship, no class!!

She is right about the music business, but connecting it with this case, file sharing bootlegs for goodness sake, is just daft. The music business was folding in on itself way before internet file sharing exploded, it did this to itself.

.

And there is still plenty of great music out there, but I'm not sure as much of it is reaching as big an audience as it did before because of the industry cannibalized itself.

.

Any way, Prince got the promo he wanted out of all this, so I'm sure it was worth the cost of a few sheets of his lawyers letterheaded paper.

1) "Every other act" is most definitely not accepting this "fanculture" bullshit you're using to rationalize your stance on bootlegging. Nobody with an ounce of intelligence could possibly believe that. Metallica, Eminem, Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Phish...those are just off the top of my head.

2) The unreleased stuff is Prince's ALONE and only he should have the authority to release it. That's not even up for debate.

3) The entitlement mindset of the "fanculture" is embarrassing.

4) You can't separate bootlegs from piracy of released work...they're two sides of the same coin.

Bootlegging will always be a part of music (hell, of all entertainment). It will always be exciting for fans to discover music from their favorite artists that they didn't know existed because it was never released. And there will always be artists who are 100% opposed to having their work taken from them and distributed without their authorization. All of that is undeniable.

So if you're gonna take part in the bootlegging of musical acts, accept the fact that you are completely, totally in the wrong here. You just are, both legally and morally. You have no right to anything you're bootlegging or distributing. None. "Fanculture" nonsense and all. You KNOW you don't, that's part of the thrill lol. So just man-up and admit it, and stop acting like it's your birthright to access stuff that doesn't belong to you simply because you want it lol...

And if you're a musical artist, accept that you can't possibly control everything. Accept that you've made people like/love your musical output so much that they'll try and seek out whatever they can find. Focus your energy and resources going after the worst of the worst. Taking a "zero tolerance" approach is gonna be a waste of time. Figure out a way to harness the more harmless aspects of this "fanculture" twaddle (lol) to your benefit. It can be done.

^ Sharon Osbourne is still talking bullshit...

she's talking about the FBI warning on DVD's, the music business' loss etc.. this has nothing to do with sharing bootlegs in the fan cultures.

Bootlegs has exsisted in ages, I bought my first (The Black Album on tape, cd & vinyl) in 1988, then Small Club 88, etc, etc... you know the story already I guess. smile

Byron you sounds a bit "desperate" .......... in your "attacks" on me.. eek

Ah never mind, I am used to that I guess... lol

The music business killed itself by charging so much for CD's. They cost less than tapes and records to make but they charged twice as much. It got so bad they stopped investing in anything but pop crap music like U2 and Justin Beiber. Had record companies charged a reasonable price for a CD such as 7 dollars, I am sure all would be well with the music industry. You can only make people by the same good music so many times in new formats before people just dont care anymore. Support real musicians (not prince or beiber or jay z or beyawnce) and the industry will bounce back.

Ozzy may not be anything other than a great entertainer, but if you don't think Sharon isn't a shrewd and savvy business woman, you need to get your head checked.

Do your homework. Without Sharon, Ozzy wouldn't be the rock icon he is revered as today.

I don't need to do my homework. Yes, Sharon is brighter than Ozzy. . . . is there any question? Most 3rd graders are. Ozzy is a loser. I don't care how much money he makes being an "entertainer". That doesn't impress me in the least.

*

However, how much does it say for Sharon being married to someone who's a sloppy drug addicted drunk who can't put a coherent sentence together? Just sayin'. She married him. She can't be the brightest bulb on the tree.

I didn't say anyone is (or should be) out to impress me. You stated that Ozzy was a great entertainer. I stated that him being a so called "great entertainer" doesn't impress me. Or, how much money he makes. I don't think he's a great entertainer. That's my opinion. He's a loser who can't put a coherent sentence together because of HIS OWN CHOICE to abuse drugs & alcohol. What, am I supposed to be impressed by that?

*

I think you have a serious chip on your shoulder.

*

You're impressed by Ozzy's entertainment skills, I'm not. End of story. lol

She's also totally off her rocker if she thinks that downloads are the reason there are only four major record labels now. There are only four now because there are four damn monopolies that bought out most of the other labels and combined them together. That's why nobody but bullshit artists get signed and promoted these days. And the few artists that slip through the cracks on the small labels now can't get airplay now because of monopolized radio. An artist that doesn't sell out and make their kind of music is just blocked in every direction except putting their stuff on the internet and hoping that someone "searches for it". Oh, how I hate when people say "there's still good new music out there but you have to 'search' for it" .... lol ....which is missing the whole point that you shouldn't have to search for it. I'm talking about good new music in general, not just Prince music. It should be on the major labels and getting regular airplay.

.

And Prince looked like a damn fool sending her flowers considering how he's bitched about the labels for years. It just goes to show that the people he prefers the most are the ones that kiss his ass even when they're clueless as to why he, himself, can't get radio airplay these days if he were to send them an actual new jam.

.

.

.

It might be true that there's no good music out there to buy, but that doesn't really have anything to do with whether it's legal or ethical to steal released or unrealeased music.

I don't see how anyone can argue that it's justifiable to steal music
