I Wish U Heaven ~ Prince 1988

Growing Up With Prince

Likewise, the swirl of gorgeous harmonies in "I Wish U Heaven" may sound comforting, but it can't conceal the lyrics' nagging sense of uncertainty. "Doubts of our conviction/Follow where we go," he nearly whispers, and sure enough, by the end of the song, the relationship is over. If I see 11, U can say it's 7, he concludes with more a sigh than a growl. Still, I wish U heaven.

I Wish U Heaven is the eighth song on Prince's tenth album Lovesexy, and, four and a half months after the album's release, I Wish U Heaven was released as the album's third and final single. It was not included on the The B-Sides compilation, but was instead included as a b-side on the European single Peach. The extended version, titled I Wish U Heaven (Part 1, 2 & 3), uses lyrics from Take This Beat, recorded a few months earlier, in its final section.

Initial tracking took place in on 31 January, 1988 at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA (two days after re-recording Lovesexy). Recording and remixing dates for I Wish U Heaven (Part 1, 2 & 3) are not known, but this likely took place in Spring or early Summer, 1988, at Paisley Park Studios, shortly before leaving on the Lovesexy Tour. - PrinceVault

Recording Personnel
  • Prince - all vocals and instruments, except where noted
  • Sheila E. - drums (uncertain involvement)

Doubts of our conviction
Follow where we go
And when the world's compassion
Ceases still I know
4 your every touch I
Thank U so much
4 your every kiss I...

I wish U love
I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

If I see 11
U can say it's 7
Still I wish U heaven

I wish U love
I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

la la la la la, do do do do do
la la la la la, do do do do do
la la la la la

I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven
I wish U heaven

Finally, 'I Wish You Heaven' - throwaway by Prince standards -

Submerged in some weird sin, Prince renounces the old myths and swims against the current tide. On this evidence he is in no hurry to get there, preferring to relish the fun of the journey.

'Lovesexy' finds new ways of saying the same things and only occasionally does it reflect life outside Prince's hermetically sealed world of fetishistic love and attendant guilt. playful and perverse, he remains a willing sinner whose Purple prose and indulgent pop still triumphs over the best of the rest. 'Lovesexy' may be a major rumpus but it's a long way short of a 'Riot'. (8/10)

PRINCE SHOULD HAVE HAD A BETTER BLUEPRINT

"Lovesexy" has almost too many good musical ideas, distributed densely and haphazardly through a collection of nine songs mostly unworthy of the effort. Had Prince recorded this album a week later, I suspect the songs would have sounded quite differently - though not necessarily any better. Only "When 2 Are in Love" - a gorgeous ballad reportedly held over from the unreleased "Black Album" - and "I Wish You Heaven," a simple, hard-hitting midtempo benediction, seem to be clearly conceived, finished compositions.

The whole album plays like a quick blast from Prince's subconscious, a week in the life, a hasty note from a troubled soul. My advice would be to slow down and think things through before writing again.

even tho I love eye no as is with sheila and the gang .. i can't help but think this era would have been great with the revolution .. especially a song like i wish u heaven .. even tho prince does this song justice .. it reminds me of power fantastic and a place in heaven and a few other songs that worked so well with the eclecticism of the revolution psychadelic jazz funk era .. but moreso .. it is the other tracks on lovesexy that sound empty and in need of the revolutionary touch .. perhaps even swapping out some of the songs as well .. such as the title song (what a mess) .. positivity, like compassion .. is right up revolution alley .. later eras such as the npg and music club i don't think even the revolution could have saved .. lovesexy was always the album i wanted to like but only a few songs stand out at the end of the day .. how i guy as wealthy as prince manages to make his records sound worse instead of better over the years still baffles me .. and the cheap sounds on lovesexy are the first step in his decline .. i wish u heaven still stands strong as one of the few highlights of this record .. great tune .. great lyrics .. great sentiment .. probably because it is so simple .. when prince keeps it simple he shines

Holy crap... I never realized there was a video for this song! I was away from most cable TV during the late 80s and through most of the 90s, so I missed a lot of stuff, it would appear.

I always felt Lovesexy was a light pull at various previous album concepts.

the speaking/sex scene in Lovesexy(song) is very similar to All My Dreams(outtake Parade)

Positivity reminds me of Crystal Balls expolation

I actually agree with ur post in many ways, never thought about it. Lovesexy doesn't hold like ATWIAD to me,

But I Wish U Heaven is my favorite track always on this album (I really don't care for the part II and III jam) it takes away from the main song. I guess there can only be 1 Computer Blue 14min rock out...

Yeah, we would post the video here, but Prince would sue us all...

I WISH U HEAVEN pt I

Part One of the mix starts with a stripped-down version of the Lovesexy album song, remixed with a dance beat. The original drum programming and rhythmic electric guitar riffs are deleted for much of the song.
