10 Years since a commerical DVD release

It's been 10 years since the release of Live in Las Vegas. As woeful a release as that was, at least it was a release. 10 years down the track we have seen some amazing tours, with potentially amazing release possibilities. If they are not worthy of releasing in Prince's opinion, will we ever see another tour great enough for him to deem acceptable to release as a live DVD/ BluRay show?

I think with a DVD of 3RD EYE GIRL performing music from "PLECTRUM ELECTRUM" album with Prince would make one great live DVD. Prince should not be the director. An independent director who specializes in chronicling live music would give the concert (music and visuals justice). All 4 members of 3RD EYE GIRL are photogenic and are charismatic in terms of looks, playing chops and chemistry. Great shots of Prince and Donna trading guitar solos, Ida and Hannah with their infectious energy and enthusiasm.

The 2013 Montreux gigs were professionally filmed. Prince could release that stuff if he wanted to.

Alas with the digital age and a lot of studio releases becoming worthless, you are relying on your skills on stage to rake in the Big Bucks. When live performances are your livelihood it would be foolish to distribute it for a one off nominal fee. Prince is no different. smile

Has very little to do with the money.

He could make some bank - per unit sold - on a decent DVD. Musicology tour comes to mind.

But how many could he sell now?

If he sells 75,000 he'd be lucky. Any artist would for that matter. And who's still selling live dvd's?

Best Buy, Target and Walmart have little or no music dvd sections left. Except local mom and pop music stores, all the music shops are gone.

So he has amazon or what ?

Truth be told, someone has to make a buck to release it right?

After it gets bootlegged and file shared for free, that's about 30k sold.

Most of us would love to see a dvd come out, myself included, but what's the point?

The boots I've seen are decent quality already.

Well whatever he wants to release If I was him I wouldn't bother with physical pressings I'd just sell the HD files through 3RDEYE Tunes

$1.77 for individual 5-10 minute clips

$7 - 10 for hour long clips (Beautiful Experience or Love 4 One Another type films)

$12 - 15 for 1:30 2 hour plus vids (full concerts rehearsals films or compelations of vids)

Also an option to buy the vids with the audio wav's included in the zip

If he wan'ts to do physical pressings then he should do pre orders that only get pressed when they hit enough orders to break even or make profits on them (which shold come with the file download)

^^ Great ideas.

I think he should release a high quality concert movie thru Netflix or Hulu.

Netflix has over 40 million subscribers and counting.

Get paid upfront and promote whatever project he's working on, or

get paid per view. If all goes well, release older projects.

Yeah, compare that to the number of Rolling Stones live DVD's. They just keep banging them out! No Stones tour without a DVD even if they play the same golden oldies every time. So there must still be a market for DVD/LPs etc. C'mon guys! We Prince fans used to be collectors like Stones/Dylan/Zappa fans. The market and the times may have changed, but there's still record collectors out there! It's just that Prince is giving us nothing to collect!

There are entire labels that specialize in selling live DVDs. Ever heard of Eagle Rock?

Considering that simply downloading music in WAV or MP3 seems to be a technical conundrom for so many Prince fans, I hate to see how they'll deal with video formats. Not to mention the not so bright people who are creating these WAV and MP3 files.

actually, this really is an excellent idea. lately netflix has been very creative with generating its own series and movies and stuff. betcha prince could work out a deal. they'd likely back him on a single project.
