Anyone think TRC sounds a little Funkadelic-esque?

I think it has a real early-Funkadelic vibe to it. Anyone else hear it?

I heard the funkadelic in 1998 live shows with his 'cries' after/before funky moments in the show.

Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Not really. To me, The War is much more a homage to Funkadelic than TRC. Funkadelic had a rock vibe while TRC is mostly soul/funk.

I think d'angelo's voodoo album was his inspiration to go for a more organic sound

No, not at all. Funkadelic's early records are very psychedelic/blues based. Rainbow Children has more of a fusion/jazz feel to it.
The War on the other hand, yeah, there's a lotta P-Funk in there.

i like funkadelic but i feel their influence on prince has been mostly negative .. just think of the cartoonish absurdity all over 'we can funk' and apply that to his entire post name change career .. funkadelic did what they did well .. but for p to discard the emotional honesty previously displayed for a somewhat cartoonish presentation of himself is in my opinion .. his downfall as an artist

there are not many songs by p these days that don't sound like he is trying to be clinton or james brown mixed with some illuminati spoiled brat perspective .. its the james brown funk grooves mixed with the silly pfunk chants and topical matter .. minus the real soul ala mans world .. and minus the true funk classics ala flashlight or one nation .. he even thru in one nation on recent tours did he not?

i seem to recall clinton being the first pioneer of the camille sound .. as for trc .. this is easily the JW funkadelic record .. maybe not in production tonal sound and all that .. but as a themed statement with lots of corny lyrics and storylines .. agreed

Yeah, 'The War' sounds very much like Funkadelic. Trevor I agree with you on the lyrics, but I also think a lot of the sound sounds Funkadelic-ish, especially the heavy incorperation of the backing vocals and the guitar work in the title track, 'Digital Garden' and 'Deconstruction'. '1+1+1 Is 3' sounds like a Funkadelic song to me, even P's vocal delivery towards the end of the song, 'Here they come y'all, rally round the palace now, you know what you go to do!' I know TRC is more jazz-focused but I still think the sound is still there, and I can't comment on the d'angelo album's influence, because I haven't heard it.

"Exodus" esp the song "the Exodus Has Begun" was Clinton like. "Days o Wild" as well.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

^ To me Exodus is sort of P's homage to Parliament (and the P-Funk sound in general), while as said above The War is his homage to Funkadelic. How much of this was deliberate only P can tell.

Well, P's 'narrator' voice (the deep 'God' voice) on TRC is straight outta GC's early Funkadelic bag, but that's about it, I'd say. That voice effect was also used on NPG Exodus, so P must have dug it back then.
