In some interview, he said that he was like his mother, kind of wild/restless. Sorry not to have concrete source/citation. I think it was a Tavis Smiley interview or something.

His full-blood sister Tyka has said that she resented her mom because other girls had ribbons in their hair and stuff that their moms did for them, but she felt her mom was not as much a doting mom like on TV. She went back to school and became a social worker or something later after splitting with their dad, so she was busy and had a lot on her plate, which Tyka later understood better as an adult, and reconciled with her. This was in some radio interview I heard a long time ago. She also said she remembers her mom singing all time while their dad played piano, so she and Prince would imitate them - he'd be at the piano and she sang.

There was a story here on the org about how Prince used to go to a neighbor's house after school and ask for cornbread, which kind of corroborates Tyka's memory of her mom being busy and not really being like the TV mom.

But she worked for the schools, so perhaps she instilled the respect for education (Prince donates a lot to education).

Prince bought his mom a house (also for his dad).

Also, I may be mistaken - and sorry for putting wrong info out there if I am - but I think Mattie was a twin?

His maternal grandmother was an SDA, so he used to go with her, but I guess Mattie was a JW at least at the latter part of her life, because she supposedly wanted Prince to be JW too?

I also believe that she wasn't a very loving mom sort of speak considering she allowed a man to be the reason why her son was forced to move out at a tender age..also he had to go to other ppl's house asking for food??? .

Have you ever experienced psychological abuse yourself?

Did you read up about it?

I used to blame my mother too. After I experienced psychological abuse in a relationship myself, I suddenly understood her position.

I used to think that if only she had been stronger....Now I know that it's not a matter of strength at all. Au contraire, it's the strong ones that are the most interesting preys there are.

My mother made a lot of bad decisions, but she did while under control of a sociopath. I can argument that he took over her mind and controlled all she did.

Of course I can't speak of Prince his parents and their relationship. But I do know that I will not be as quick to blame the person who was the subject of the abuse.

I started to realize what happened to me as a child and what was happening to me in my marriage when I read the book "Stalking the Soul" by Hirigoyen.

And I was able to start my healing with the books of Robin Norwood.

I would not put the blame on his mother that easily. It's never that simple.

Most often it's ladies who have romantic phantasies about him that are particularly interested in these kind of elements of his life.

This is a fan site, where all kinds of aspects of P's life are discussed. So what's with the third reich like judgement of what we can and cannot discuss? I could understand if the posts were mean spirited, but the majority of them have been inquisitive, nothing more. I think it's extremely interesting what role Mattie played in his life, good or bad or a combo of both. It may be none of "your" business, but other people want to know, and as long as the inquiries are respectful, who the hell are you to tell us what we can and cannot discuss. Leave the moralizing to the Sunday sermoners, thank you very much.

if you listen to the 2004 song "reflection" he mentions her in a positive light.

This is probably too much information, but I knew a nurse at Fairview Southdale where his Mother passed away. Prince came to visit her a couple of days before she passed. He of course visited in the middle of the night. The staff at the hospital buzzed because he was even in the building. I appreciate this shows him as a regular person visiting his Mom and not being a rock star.
