Prince playing "What Have You Done For Me Lately"

QUESTION: 1) When did Prince first start throwing WHYDFML into his live set? I kind of remember it as Rosie Gaines singing it, so the Diamonds and Pearls era? Or earlier with Boni Boyer Lovesexy era?

2) What was the song he would mix it in to? And what came after it?

Thanks.

It was such a silly thing from him, he should have been more straightforward about it. Especially because Janet's father did not want Jimmy & Terry to make his daughter sound like Prince.

He plays it during the concert at Tokyo Dome 1990. Rosie sings on it too. He keeps shouting 'Who wrote that?' Always thought it was a Janet Jackson song without P involvement but u never know....

He says that but he didn't write it.

It's Jam and Lewis and Janet.

.

I think he was just kinda bing obnoxious/playful cuz J&L obviously were using elements of Minny Funk for Janet. It's actually more like a Time song.

.

If anyone plays this, can someone tell me the bridge chords? Im learning it and I think these are the chords but not sure:

.

The "I never ask for more than I Deserve..." part:

.

F#Maj7 Ebm7 BMaj7 ?(you know it's the truth) I think it's something over Ab here?

.

Then it repeats: F#maj7, Ebm7 Bmaj7

.

But what is the chord for "I tell you no..... way"?

Prince says who wrote that because Janet Jackson was touring Japan soon after or just before him. He was giving Props to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis for their Rhythm Nation album.

It really did not come off that way, it seemed like he wanted credit for it. It wasn't even a recent song of Janet's by then either.

So what (hidden?) credit does mr. P have on this song?

It was just a friendly quip and acknowledgement of Jam and Lewis' success - nothing more nothing less.

Prince first sang What Have U done 4 me Lately back in 1986. He sang the main line to the song at the pre-Parade tour First Avenue March 3rd gig (Jimmy Jam was in attendance).

Considering the song had just been released in the charts two months prior it's always been my opinion that Prince had a hand in this song (or that it was given as a truce offering after the snow debacle that inspired Old Friends 4 sale).

Why should/would Prince know or care what Janet's father wanted of her?

I don't think it is. I think GaryMF knows watzup. My understanding is that Prince pisses off a lot of people by his impulsive actions with disregard for others and 'apologizes' by giving or writing a song for that person. My understanding is WHUDFML was his apology to Jam/Lewis for firing them from The Time. Similarly, he apologized to Jesse Johnson with 'The Dance Electric', Sinead O'Connor with 'Nothing Compares 2 U', etc.

I appreciate your saying I know watzup..... but Acutally I was the one who said it was a "reach".

Awwfrack theorized that he gave it to them.

Your examples below aren't analogous because he "gave" Jesse Dance Electric but he still kept the writing credits, and the $ from royalties as a writer.

So does anyone play this? Still working on the bridge section as posted above, I think I have most of it, but need the chord for the last part "I'm telling you, no way"

The first time Eye heard WHUD4ML(recorded by my girl Janet). Eye knew that it was a Prince track! Eye just know prince's style of keyboard playing. prince's continuous add of this track 2 his massive catalog of concert per4mances proves it.

It just baffles me on how gifted this man is @ creating hits 4 other artist & himself! Even Mj's talented sister first massive HIT! Its a slap in the face to Mr. Joe Jackson & his gifted late son...

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

Pure speculation. .

.

There is no proof or evidence that Prince wrote it.

.

It sounds more like the Time songs, which although writeen by Prince, were PLAYED by J&L for years. So it's no surprise that they wrote a song in that style. .

.

I never realized til my bass player pointed it out, but Fishnet by Morris Day, also written by J&L is basically the same type of song.

.

So this is just wishful thinking on y'all's part. By that logic, Prince also wrote Oh Sheila by RFTW as well as songs from Paula Abdul's first album like The Way That You Love Me.

Well explain why Prince has reclaimed it again on almost every tour stop? Like he has done with other songs he wrote like The Time's "Cool" & "The Bird", Sinead's "Nothing Compares 2 U" & Sheila E's Glamourous Life", Andy's "People Pleaser" & "Super Conductor, Bria's Elixer" Etc....
