Do you think the "Breakdown" is overrated?

After listinening to the incomplete studion version from the "Dakota' and catching a few live performances of it. I've came to several conclusions on the track. First off, I was told that this song was submitted for the "Great Gatsby" soundtrack but was declined. The lyics seem to fit more in line with that project. I really like the song but I really dont empathsize with the lyrics. And I really dont feel sorry for him with what he's trying to convey with the lyrics. He created his own isolance and I'm not sympathetic towards his loneliness. He brought that on hinself. Musically It's a great and emotional song and yes I really do like this track alot when comparing it to the other to the 2012/2013 3rd eye girl downloads. It's just I see so many fans place this song on a pedastal as the saving grave and the strongest songl from the material from these new 2012-2013 tracks. It reminds my of an "Empty Room" type track. I just dont think one great song amongst the 15 or so averager songs is going to make or brake the album. Like I said "Yes I love the song" but I din't think it would be the saving grace amongst the other slated album tracks.

I think context is important. When we first heard a snippet of it, I believe at the tail-end of the Dakota shows, it was as if we were hearing a brilliant song, tantalising listening to it through the less than stellar sound quality of the then circulating bootleg. Thus, much like the Black album original listening experience, that bootleg-esque sneak preview carries weight, perhaps too much, but weight nonetheless, especially when the song appears to stand head and shoulders above the other recent output. The fact that it appeared to demonstrate some real emotion I believe has added to the halo effect. But you are right. It is effectively a new Empty Room style number and, on that basis alone, it will be a welcome addition to the catalogue, but perhaps not as groundbreaking as our initial fanboy/fangirl reactions.

How can "The Breakdown" make or break the album if the album hasn't been released? The live performances of the song is plaintive, but the lyrics are too vague to understand why Prince is having The Breakdown . "This could be the saddest story that's ever been told...I use to want the house with the biggest pool". I'm hoping Prince re-wrote the song to tighten up the lyrics.

Good point re: lyrics, bashraka. That was a funny quote re: the pool being the saddest story that's ever been told. Exaggeration, much?

To me I feel its not a track that would make or break his new album (whatever that will be). Is it one of the strongest tracks we have heard this year so far. YES, but the rest of the new songs really pale in comparrison to that song. Out of any songs from this period, this seems the song that people have the highest hopes for and a track that fans are dying to hear. I've seen too many fans herald that song as one of the best songs in years(which it could be). Lets just see how it works in the context of the new album. I look forward to hearing this song and loving it. I want to love it but I'm afraid that some of the average and lackluster traks we heard so far just aren't as strong enough to hold a candle to the win with the "Breakdown"

interesting to hear it was offered (even written?) for the Great Gatsby, in a way that explains the lyrics at bit more, but also spoils it a bit as it may not be a personal/heartfelt lyric from Prince but rather a song written for or about someone else.

well it seems to have been re-recorded anyway, since we heard the snippet

from the dakota dj set. 3rdEyeGirl were reported to be recording parts for it

a while after that preview. kind of like "2Y2D" also seems to have been put

through the 3rdEyeGirl ringer and got a more rock production. it's all just a

matter of waiting and hearing.

.

i don't think we should really knock the breakdown just yet. regardless of a

few dodgy lines, i'm just glad prince is actually singing about himself, with a

bit more introspection. for that alone, i applaud him at this point in time.

.

was it ever confirmed that it was written for The Great Gatsby? i guess with

a bit of a stretch you could say the lyrics are 'inspired by' but they're not a

tight fit with fitzgerald's story.

What makes you think that he is singing about himself?

Anyway - a pretty conventional song. One of the weakest this year.

The wooh is on the one!

Severely overrated. I don't understand any of the love it gets and I find it to be one of the weakest songs among the new songs released or premiered this year.

er

I agree with Big Chick that we like The Breakdown mostly because all the other new stuff is so dull.
But I really hope you're not going to ask this question about everything Prince ever recorded! wink

hard to day it is overrated because no one has actual heard the complete finished studio song - I really like what I have heard so far because it was so different from songs like RNRLA, screwdriver fixurlifeup etc - more of a traditional Prince song (if there is such a thing) - time will tell

I don't think it is a personal song - he doesn't really do that does he? I think he likes to keep it all to himself

as far as Gatsby someone said in another thread that Boyfriend and Love Thy Will Be Done were offered according to the director - but whoever said this didn't offer any kind of proof or links to that info

anyway - it will be great to hear it someday - hopefully!
