2013 so far has been brilliant!- Give P some props!

really don't get why people have been moaning?. P deserves so many props for this year.If for no other reason has he put together the 3rd eye band with who he has coached, styled, toured, recorded extensively with and come up with a very distinct sound & look...dare I say it but we can mark 2013's tour as clear;y identifiable as we could mark the timelines in the 80's!!. Any serious musicians amongst us will appreciate how great an acheivement it is to put the 3rd eye girl band together and get them 'tour ready'. So, HUGE tick in the box for that alone. Now lets add:- twitter - who would have thought!!..& he's funny & engaging. Yes it's all marketing driven etc BUT it's great to have him around- 3rd eye girl music website - great, yes there's been some glitches but we're heading back to in the right direction- live music webcasts for free!!- seriously frickin great - [luckily i have most locked & loaded on my pod! . We get to hear work in progress, great jammin' etc - u would normally pay loads to a bootlegger for this!- new music - if he doesn't release a CD this year it won't bother me - there's been more than enough to satisfy - just the blues solos in 'Midnight Blues' alone is enough for me! I am not bothered in any of your opinions about the quality of the songs..the point is that lots has been made available, some excellent, some average.- new videos - always great to have new stuff- tours + aftershows - some have been off the scale IMHO & some aftershows have been incredible form what I have heard [!!]He may be getting older BUT he still works damn hard and we all have to give him huge respect for that. Anyone who cares to look at my older posts should be aware that I am one of the older & ever more cynical crowd BUT 2013 has really got me giddy again!!!

The thing you don't wanna hear: As long as the music is still mediocre, who cares?

That is of course a matter of opinion. Gone are the days when everybody was raving about a new Prince release. Today it's almost always fifty-fifty like/dislike.So this year will never be as big as 1984/87/take your pick. No problem there, that's just the way things go, but it does explain why some longtime fans are less than thrilled about the new stuff. What annoys me a little is that people who start these kind of threads seem to be saying: Isn't Prince amazing! He has a new band! He tours! He's releasing music! In other words, he's doing what he's been doing since 1978. That in itself is really not that special. A musician making music, wow, that's really incredible. wink

There have been a lot of nice moments in 2013. In my opinion, there have been some lovely gems (Groovy Potential, Breakfast Can Wait), some catchy but not incredible tracks (Screwdriver + the remix, Same Page Different Book) and some throwaways (Fixurlifeup + its awful remix). There have been some great live shows that have made it into circulation, but a year without such things is quite rare for Prince.
Digging old tracks up and rearranging them with a new band is old hat by now for Prince, though still very enjoyable.
.
So, until there's an album or some kind of compilation released, I don't think "brilliant" can be part of the conversation. Good to see Prince at work and making some TV appearances, concerts and single releases, but brilliant? Not just yet.

Some good songs, some bad ones, some tweets (if that's still him... or ever was), some shows. Not bad, but not exactly brilliant.

If he brings out an album (a good one) and does a concert somewhere I can get to then it will be a brilliant year for me cool

I absolutely agree with you, especially about the parts I put in bold. Prince has given us more this year alone than in the last - I don't know - ten years (?) before!! (I mean ALL of the things he has been doing in a very short time this year, new things like live streams and twitter included.) And he does deserve a LOT of respect for all that! After all, he could just sit back and not tour or record any new music at all.

Instead, he has given us a lot of new music (even for FREE), he has toured, has done videos, and I bet we'll still get an album or two before the year is over! Via the live streams he has shared some really great stuff, even live footage! Plus, he is sharing his humour with us on twitter, such a big surprise! - What more can any fan ask for?! - And my personal highlight this year has been what he is doing with 3rdEyeGirl - especially live!! I love love love the hard rocking shows ... Prince making his guitar scream is just the very best! biggrin

Prince is active, creative, working hard and always giving us something new to talk about - how anyone can still complain is beyond my comprehension! I'm loving this very purple 2013! Prince rules!!

Imo, everyone who is complaining is taking Prince for granted. The lack of appreciation for what he is doing is sad. No one needs to like everything ... I, for example, don't care much for the big band and the hornz while others love exactly that! But with all he has been doing this year already there is plenty to give him praise for.

Don't know if it's been brilliant, but I've thoroughly enjoyed 2013--the singles and the live shows! He hasn't delivered an "album," but he's delivered enough new (to me) songs that I enjoy a great deal, and the LOL Tour has been excellent!

Props for realizing the internet is not dead and imbracing it more, and for letting Janelle produce him.

But we still have no album, no remasters or vault access. So not so brilliant yet...3 months to go.

my 2 favorite highlights:

1. Crimson & Clover YouTube clip

2. Groovy Potential

Just a suggestion....How about a Vault app? Access to purchase studio outtakes, live recordings, music videos (released & unreleased), concert videos, protege material and whatever else he wants to sell us. That cold be brilliant...if he hired the right people that is.

About the most unlikely thing I've ever read... but hell, would that be incredible! 2013 would be a brilliant year indeed biggrin

It's been a big year, it's been a good year so far in terms of new music, new band, short intense tour and festivals. His marketing approach and engagement with fans is incongruous though.

I don't like been drip fed the songs. when you get a song at a time I find they get over played too quickly.

I would rather have a lead single and then an album and some b sides.

For me the songs released just don't fit together to make a satisfying listen.

And more than ready for an album now.

I agreed with everything, until I saw the word "praise".. Prince seems to be having a good year. For a long minute, I thought he was fading into himself.. he just seemed distant from his fans to an extent. Speaking of fans, I feel they have a lot to do with giving him the assurance that he is still relevant after all of this time. We all know that he is talented & works hard. I personally just want to see him enjoy this time of his career. He does seem to be doing that. Way to go (out?) Prince.

It's been a really mixed bag I think. We've had some music I really enjoy and some I don't, a tour I couldn't attend but sounds amazing and the brilliant live feeds. On the negative side, serpangate really left a bad taste in my mouth (it really wasn't necessary) and, even though as I said I've really enjoyed some of the music that has been released, there hasn't been a Prince album for the third year in a row. I still hope for a 3 cd pack before the end of the year (Prince, 3rdeyegirl and superconductor reloaded, even though Andy Allo was talking about her next album today on Facebook), but so far... 2013 has been ok, but not great...

thanks for the opinions. I guess from a UK perspective [don't know about the rest of the planet] he has got some decent airplay here which is a huge shift forward. Suspect overall there is more to come and a CD or 2 appears to be on the way....suspect it will be November to max out on seasonal sales etc.
