A HD-tracks transfer is not (necessarily) a remaster.

Correct! Having said that, I think 1999 and ATWIAD offer the most improvement.

Where is this information coming from? I remember that someone had mailed Bernie to ask about the 180 gr vinyls of DM, Controversy and 1999 that were released last year, and it was confirmed they were remastered. HAven't heard any info about these HD TRacks releases though...

I can't find where I read about the confirmation, but the same thing happens (a remaster is invested in and made and kept ready)with remastered movie soundtracks and movies that are then rereleased in multiple forms and issues for different regions or formats. Most likely the remasters (which are of course digital files) are what the vinyls or these HD tracks are created from then licensed for use by those respective companies. Warners could go to these same remasters and make their own deluxe reissues too. I'd have to look

The same thing normally seems to happen with studio movies (like Purple Rain or SOTT in Prince's case). An HD 4K or 2K master is made and kept ready by a whatever firm invests and does that part of the process, and then that video file is assigned/converted/licensed for things like the blu-ray releases, HD cable broadcasts, even new SD versions by various companies for different regions.

Prince's HDTracks are not remasters. I purchased 1999 from HDTracks and it does not sound much different than the CD. The bass is slightly better, but that's probably due to the higher resolution of the HDTracks version.

So they are better than any current download availible, but not "better" than the CD. Not worth $25 for slightly better than CD audio and cover art only. It does not come with liner notes.

It would have been worth it if they were remastered, but they are not.

A HD-tracks transfer is not (necessarily) a remaster.

From the site:

.

An HDtracks file is a one to one exact digital copy of the master tape. There is no better way to hear recorded music on this planet than hearing an HDtracks hi res file played back via your computer or your digital music server with a good pair of speakers. You can even take Master Quality with you on the go with all the new portable hi res players on the market now. When you hear back our 96/24 or 192.24 files is like watching the highest quality 80 inch Plasma HDTV with a blu ray as its source.

In other words it's not a "re-"master but an exact digital copy of the master. Nothing "re" about it. The sound may be better than that on your old cd's or lp's tho.

I've listened to all the samples on HDtracks and am very impressed by ATWIAD only, none of the others though. But not prepared to shell out 25 bucks for some digital files (call me old fashioned, I don't mind)

This is not music, this is a trip
No, it's not a drug, it's something more hip
Don't need no reefer, don't need cocaine
Purple music does the same to my brain

That's what I gather also. I've noticed for several albums (ones that have been remastered and reissued), they only feature the "old" art work and I assume that they are using the original master recording.

.

I can tell on ATWIAD that it wasn't remastered, but it really sounded clearer and less hiss was evident. Especially during the intros on "Conditon of the Heart" and the title track.

Did you hear the goof at the start of America?

They cut the start of the song a bit early so that a `ring` sound of Tamborine can be heard at the start of America...
