Already said it, but I will say it again...what an amazing song. Just played it loud in my living and now I know again why I love this guy so much. Thanks Prince!

Musicianship has very little to do with songwriting. That's how people who can't actually play that well are able to produce great music. Its nice to have both, but not a requirement.

You do know that kidmelody2012 is a better guitarist than Prince, right? And yet somehow, only one of them is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. biggrin

This argument is always funny:

You have to be an incredible musician to criticize, but it's ok to be a complete musical idiot to admire! lol

I have been listening to this song all day and I think it grows more and more on me. This is the best song so far.

It's VERY typical Prince that we've known him for. To me it sounds more like from Symbol period. I think this is vault material.

Thank you for the song, Prince, but drums could be so much better. razz

Prince I will always miss and love U.

The playing's as good or better than it ever was--however, if anything, extended years as a professional would only lead to a greater chance that he (or any musician) would come to rely on what's worked in the past, using more and more polished forms of old tricks. What was new and shocking in old Prince was probably a result of his still being young and learning, or even from making dumb mistakes that then led him to doing something that took advantage of what was originally an error--he's really not learning anymore. He knows how to do what he does, and he's still doing it, maybe improving in playing (maybe not), but that has nothing to do with composition, and there's no reason to think it would. He's a craftsman, performing his craft. I usually like what he's doing now, but I don't expect to be blown away by anything like I used to be routinely. Of course, I was more musically naive back then, too--and some things that I'd never heard before in '85 and '86 I now have heard lots of places from lots of people.

Prince,

On the 12th listen, I finally get it!

To me, this is 6-songs-in-one. It's a puzzle that fits together nicely, but I needed a little time to put it all together.

I dig the sonic picture that all the sections merge into......

Harks back to his 70's sound...it's a grower on me and I think as the title suggests, this has potential.

Absolutely fantastic.

One of my new favourite tracks from Prince since the Musicology mainstream resurgence. 8.5/10

He got me again with this one. Still crave that concept album and/or mad scientist, experimental sounds, though.

eye like it!!

I swear it seems like he is gearing up for a Musicology Part 2 type of tour. He takes the girls out for a rock tour to get them ready. Meanwhile a horn section is gathering and now they are rehearsing this week in London, then NY. If he does, I bet he will play this song live. It reminds me of something on Musicology but better.

Prince just doesn't know how to actually write songs anymore. All he does is vamps 'n grooves and jams. None of this feels all that inspired. His vocals are weak, the lyrics are completely hallf-assed, repetitive... the melodies all feel under-developed, besides the main hook of the song which is pretty good. I wish he would release a good new song on this site.

This has to be on the new album.

This is going down for me as one of my favourite Prince songs. I love it. I can't stop playing it.

His vocals are excellent on this song.

Best song since the Gold experience album.

I can't wait for the new album. I really think we are going to get a classic.

Well, rhythm. Amongst other things. You wouldn't suggest that traditional african music is not music, I suppose.
