Is Prince perhaps past his expiration date?

I mean, how many other 80s pop stars are promoting religion, other than Vanity?
How many are promoting healthy living, non-alcoholism and no to drugs?
How many stand up for or even care about ownership of one's work/artistic/intellectual rights?
How many are still revolutionising an industry? Saying no to the middle man and sticking a finger up to the powers that be?
How many are regularly suing their fans and shutting them down, too?
How many are recording and touring with not one, but two different band line ups, in two entirely different genres?
I mean, aside from Rick Astley, how many remain a musical force to be reckoned with?
How many are actually still alive?
No other 80s pop star is doing it.
So, I think Prince should quit.
Maybe it is time to retire.
Remain in his box.

You are a bit ironic right?

Your fine wine analogy; Prince has matured from If I Was Your Girlfriend to the likes of Life O The Party???

To be honest, I can't compare because I've never heard Life O The Party. I was away for a few years. I know it's on Musicology but I've never heard it myself.

*

However, I don't think comparing 2 songs is enough to judge whether he has matured or not. One needs to look at the whole picture.

*

Btw, I wasn't basing my comment solely on the music.

*

Prince should retire only if he wants to retire. Just my twocents.

personally i think it would just be better if some of his socalled fans would retire and stay in their box so the people who still enjoy him dont have to keep hearing this crap.

Well, I may be new here but as a musician I can say that anybody who thinks Prince has 'lost it' is wrong. I watch a lot of live music and you just cant deny Ps musician and showmanship.

It's quite hard to write lyrics, incidentally. Also, some songs may be written to provoke a deeper thought but some are merely to entertain. Not all of them are going to great, sme with any artist.

Now, I find that P has had good and bad lyrics and songs throughout all his career. Some are truly awful so I ignore them andenjoy the rest.

I for one am quiteglad his musicis less overrtly sexual, heis a 55 year old blokein the end so he has probably grown up bit.

Ps sorry about the spelling, but my tablet can't seem to keep upwith my typing. Its going out the wndow.

Prince has actually aged (musically and persona-wise) much better than anyone would have predicted back in his wild early 80's (or even the crisis early 90's) days. I think the masses actually are starting to appreciate him more now than they ever did.

-

Prince always had the shock/awe/imagery/boundary pushing of his pop contemporaries like Madonna and Michael Jackson. However, he also has a seemingly endless musical talent to rely on when all else fails.

-

At the end of the day, if you strip Prince of all his packaging/persona and window dressing, he is the baddest musician on the planet. He doesn't need the look, the clothes, the mystery, the sex, the evolsidog manifesto, or even a name. Hell, he doesn't even really need (this it what is really scary) his guitar. All he needs is the 2 and 4.

-

Because of the way Prince straddles pop and art, because of his seamless crossing of musical styles and genres, he (like all great artists in history) remains timeless.

he pretty much has retired. He just does shows occasionally, releases stuff every few years so I look at it as he has retired. He used to be very active. Now he is just a VERY part time musician. He has done it all. There is no motivation for him anymore. I think the only reason he does ANYTHING now is just to try and appease what few fans he has left. He cant please them but he tries every now and then. I dont think hes worried about it really. Enjoy your semi retired life P!!

are you on crack today. Whether we like his music or not only a total prick would suggest he is 'part time', he still sells out shows, tours constantly, has put together a new band, clearly is enjoying life, has released a load of new stuff, still is on TV etc. WTF more do you want? Appease his fans? - BS - he's NOT interested in the hard core fans - it's bloody obvious that he is searching for new ones!.

If I Was Your Girlfriend vs Life O The Party?

This is one of the most stupid replies I've ever read. Ok so now, answer this...

Housequake vs Dear Mr. Man

I guess you're speaking about maturity comparing lyrics of songs, choosing one of Prince's best songs of all time vs an average one. Now compare lyrics of those 2 songs I mentioned.

You'll probably get your answer in 2 secs.

I like one of the answers in this post about looking at the bigger/whole picture, that what it's all about.

Knickers in a twist much, Marco? It was clear to me, but perhaps not to you, that the original post was satirical in nature. Surely, the Rick Astley comment gave that away, if nothing else.
