The Breakdown: Validation he still has it as a songwriter

Just heard this song which was played live on the LOL tour.
Mature lyrics, beautiful piano melody and churning guitar.
Think Empty Room combined with I Hate U.

Love this song. Additional lyrics to the first verse floating...

"Every book I read, said I would meet somebody like you. But now I am sorry, so sorry, for the things I did to you. A journal full of numbers I used to go thru but I am just broken down"

"There is a door you can walk thru when it used to be a wall. I don't care as long as you catch me when I fall. The closer we get to the breakdown"

Yes. It is an absolutely phenomenal song. He opened with it when I saw him in Vegas and I already knew the song from having the bootleg of the Dakota shows. I got chills down my spine when he and the band performed it.

It might well be the best song he has written in the last 5 years.

I like that song but is it really a new song? One orger posted some info about it being an older song from the early 90s. ( But the registered song´s title was "Down", not "Breakdown").

for me it's the best thing I've heard from him since Chelsea Rodgers.

Proper good in the sense that it compares to his best work rather than just good in that it's polished, professional and passionless but still better than most other people's work

I just heard the Montreaux version of this song and was left speechless by it. This is one of the most beautiful Prince songs I've ever heard. It's up there with my favorite Prince songs like Moonbeam Levels, and Adore. Quite frankly, it's a crime this hasn't been released yet. But if he's played it live a ton of times already, there's a good chance he'll release it... I hope.

On the other hand - people only seem to be talking about one great song, when it used to be great songs.

Just boots for now. The Montreux recording is probably the best.

The version from Live Out Loud Tour Vancouver early show for sound quality and musical performance is better than the Montreux version to me. My fear is that if he releases a studio version that the song will be bogged down by synths and dated drum machine beats.

I love this song so much. Has anyone transcribed the lyrics anywhere?

Ya'll like it that much? I thought it was ok, to put it up there with moonbeam levels & the like is insane. Musically it's pretty dull & the chorus is pretty subpar. I think this is a byproduct from not penning a quality tune in ages . Ya'll must be the same crowd that liked "Gold" which had cheese coming outta it for days.

The song you're referring to was written for Tevin. Also, Prince may have quoted it on a page in his Sacrifice Of Victor book, writing, "I'm down with my crew...til death do us part," underneath a pic of him and the band laughing.
