Songs that could have been hits and shoulda been released as singles

I really think Prince missed a few hits in his career.

Dolphin and Love Sign, if not for being lost in the WB wars, both had potential to be hits back in the days. I remember that the video for Love Sign had a lot of TV airplay in France and everybody I knew loved the song. As for Dolphin, it's probably one of the most catchy pop song ever written by Prince.

Sleep Around should have been the hit of the summer of 1997! I'm not sure wheither it would have been a single if EMI hadn,'t collapsed but it had more commerical appeal than any of the songs on Emancipation. Just imagine it being played in the nightclubs in summer! It had some kind of a Jamiroquai vibe that would have appealed to mass audiences.

So Far, So Good. I think I've read somewhere that Gwen Stefani's label opposed the release of the song as a single but I'm not sure if it's true. I don't even understand why on earth TGRES was the lead single for Rave: So Far, So Pleased was such an OBVIOUS hit! With a good video it would have been one for sure! Actually the year after that The Corrs had a major hit with a very similar song (Breathless)!

The Greatest Romance Ever Sold (Jason Nevins Remix). While the album version had little potential as a single IMHO (it was an obvious attempt to recreate the success of TMBGITW but 1999 wasn't 1994) I remember being shocked when I heard the Jason Nevins remix! It's just so bloody catchy! It just made me think of Moloko's Sing It Back. Their (wonderful) 1998 album I Am Not A Doctor had bombed and suddenly, a year after the album's release, someone had the idea of releasing that remix of SIB by Boris Duglosch and it became a major hit that saved not only the album's sales but probably Moloko's career as well. Released in the summer of 2000, I think the Nevins remix of TGRES could have done the same sing and become a major summer nightclubs hit.

Beautiful, Loved And Blessed. It was released as a promo only and honstly I don't know what they were thinking! Once again with a proper promo video this song was an obvious hit! It's pop and catchy with a smooth groove and positive lyrics, I'm quite sure everyone would have loved it! It had more chances anyway that Te Amo, Fury or even Black Sweat!

What do you think?

Any other songs you think missed the top 40 because they weren't given a chance?

Actually the visuals of a video would have helped, because in 'action' he could have shown what he was actually talking about.

Private Joy - Why this wasn't pushed confuses me

Pop Life - Needed a video for real

Girls & Boys before Mountains ( while I LOVE mountains it is HORRID single choice)

HouseQuake , Adore

LOVESEXY - that would have been the catchphrase of the year

Electric Chair

Phermone considering this was being played a video would have set this one off!

I really, really never understood why When You Were Mine was never a single. If there's one song off the Dirty Mind album that had hit potential...

nod I agree. Not releasing "Girls And Boys" as the second single is the main reason why Parade wasn't a massive seller. The album began tumbling down the charts when "Mountains" became a single.

Prince repeated that same mistake with the next two albums,SOTT and Lovesexy. He chose questionable second singles (IIWYG and Glam Slam, respectively) which hurt the album sales.

In the states it was a b-side to Anotherloverholenyohead, which was the 3rd single to an already dead album (sales-wise). I am talking A-side and 2nd single on the heels of Kiss. I think it would've performed much better than Mountains...esp with that awesome video. Mountains, while being a great song & video and fan favorite, was not accessible to the masses at all.

Yeah..in the states,"Mountains" was the official second single from Parade. And while I like the song,I don't think it was a strong choice to be a single."Gilrs And Boys" was so much more fun and catchy.Around the time of Parade,I began to notice a pattern.Prince would release a really strong, powerful first single (which would quickly climb the charts) then follow it up with a questionable second single, which would slow the sales of the album.

RRA

"Starfish & Coffee"

I like to believe that one as a single could've brought in people into PrinceWorld that aren't necessarily fans because of the fact the song isn't about sex or has bad words. In fact it has a very pleasant feel-good melody that's memorable that might remind one of Paul McCartney and that guy had a ton of hits based off just the melodies alone.

I've said this many times before...

"Lovesexy" (the song) should have been the second single from that album. It's a really exciting, dynamic track that captures the spirit of the album.Of course,a single edit would have been required, removing the 'nasty' talk at the end of the song, lol

In his prime his biggest hits were his more dance oriented stuff,if you all haven't noticed his big dance hits were also his big pop and rnb hits.
He has an issue with follow up singles that's for sure.
B sides not included his lip cuts that would have been hits in my eyes are the following:
I'm yours
Sexy Dancer
Bambi
When you were mine
Automatic
Dmsr
Computer blue
The beautiful ones
Girls and boys(in the USA)
Hot thing(only released to radio)
Adore
Forever in my life
House quake
Love sexy
The future
Trust
Joy in repition
Live 4 love
The continental +++(such a missed hit)
Loose
Dolphin
Billy jack bitch
Sleep around
The human body
Jam of the year
Style
undisputed
