Once You Discover Genius, What's Next?

I have been realizing in the 20 years I have been a Mega Prince prince fan I have been on a quest to find artists as talented and Genius as he is or even close. The result after 20 years is that there are Great Genius artists that have existed throughout time, but nobody comes close to Prince. So in the end once you've reached the Top and found the Greatest Artist ever does anyone have at least some problem listening to anyone else? For example I am a huge Music fan and I love the Greats like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Michael Jackson, etc.. The list of Great artists can go on, but since the discovery of Prince I just find myself missing his music when I take a break and listen to other artists because he is the by far the Greatest for me.

So in the end does anyone ever feel like since Prince is the Greatest artist of all time and we've discovered him so this makes it more difficult to listen to anyone that is below him? I just find myself missing Prince after a short time away from his music. With Prince you also get everything with all the albums he's punched out, You got Funk, R&B, Pop, Rock, Jazz, Acoustic, Piano, etc..

Prince is the most talented, all around amazing singer/songwriter/performer that ever lived.

That being said, there is so much genius out there from lesser talents, that I find it hard to believe that someone couldn't find another person to listen to.

Despite all of Prince's talents, his album releases in the last 15 years have not even graced my top 10 list. So many other better, often far better albums have been released.

By that's neither here nor there. Look how disturbing this image is:

I agree with you on the first statement 100%

I also agree with you on there being so much genius out there from lesser talents and it's not that it's hard to find someone else to listen too, but it's just like since Prince is just the best it's kinda like just working your way backwards. With him you've just Reached the Top and it's unlikely he will ever be beaten.

I can understand the last 15 years not cracking the Top 10 list you have, but I bet it cracks your Top 20, lol.

er

I agree with you both. When Prince's albums became more and more boring, of course you start to listen to other music. For me, it wasn't until I started digging Bob Dylan that I had that "yes! this is it!"feeling again.

Your definition of "everything" is music is quite restrictive. You should check your premises. There are dozens of other musical genres that Prince hasn't touched (or hardly ever).

To my ear, I agree - Prince reaches me in ways other cannot. However, there is other genius out there, and some people reach me in ways Prince cannot. Looking at your list of artists, I would suggest some wild ass changes to the genres you listen to. Not because it's not great (I think it is) but because Prince cannot be compared to his contemporaries.

Some ideas for you off the top of my head this morning (you'll likely already like some of these, may hate some of these, but that's the point - experimentation) - I'm sure others can add some ideas as well:

- Pink Floyd (Waters has awesome lyrics and Gilmour can REALLY play) - Animals / Final Cut

- Cat Power - Juke Box (cover songs. Her version of "She's Got You" is awesome)

- Joe Bonamassa - An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House

- and perhaps not that much of a genre change, Beck. Modern Guilt and Sea Change are great.

I've read through what you all have said since my original post and there is a recurring thing that you all are saying that maybe I didn't make clear the first time. I know there is tons of Genius out there in tons of Genres of music. I listen to countless amount of music and have tried an enormous more than many people do out there. I guess my ultimate point was as simple as at least for me nobody has reached me the way Prince has or blown me away quite at the same level. So I agree it's very enjoyable to mix it up and listen to other Great artists out there. But in the end I always end up in the same place that for me Prince is the Greatest of them all. So with Prince I've reached a High or Peak level that I just never quite reach with other artists most of the time.

For better or worse, your posts always manage to reach all my funkspectations, no matter how high or low.

And I've got to agree. With pretty much all of your post, unfortunately.

Once You Discover Genius, What's Next? Prolificity doesn't equal genius. Bob Pollard has written a lot more songs AND released them. He's far from the genius that his rabid fans believe him to be.

Activity does NOT equal achievement.

Prince is good at playing a lot of instruments. He is REALLY good at singing. He has written a lot of songs and a respectable percentage of them are quite good.

He is not the best that ever lived by a long stretch, though if you're cinfining your statement to the last 100 years then you MIGHT be onto something.

Well, then my infinite love for Prince's music, and he's by all means my favorite musician ever, doesn't prevent me from enjoying other artists just as much. I actually sometimes spend weeks without listening to any Prince at all. But in the end I'll always come back to him, I'll always get every note of music he cares to release, and I'll probably enjoy his music until the day I die.
