That was just a little guitar riff prince added 2 that Stevie song. This new song with Janelle is a collab effort that he let her control.. Totally different effort & outcome..

From what I've read, Stevie was working on the track and he asked P to lay something down on it. They jammed a bit and Prince ended up playing rhythm guitar and bass on the track. Either way, he was still produced by Stevie.

disbelief

No! He was a session musician 4 Stevie.Prince just added what he saw fit for the track..If anything Prince arranged the guitar rhythm himself.Produced means. Example! Stevie produced a whole track 4 Prince. That wasn't the case here. Stevie produced himself. Prince just contributed.

I think people feel like they HAVE to support Janelle Monet because she's a beautiful (VERY beautiful, at least to me), natural Black woman that has "style" and is doing her own thang, at least look wise. The problem for me is once you get past that, she's pretty dull. I remember when I first started reading about her and I saw pictures I thought to myself "Wow, this chick seems like she'll be doing some creative stuff." The fact that she was down with the Elephant 6 collective, which contains members of Of Montreal, one of my favorite bands, was promising. But when I listened to her it was pretty standard, nothing amazing at all. She's not a great singer, her songs are not unlike anything else popular at the moment. She doesn't even have that much charisma. She kinds has a blank stare to me, like her stage show is all forced and not fluid. The only modern Black female performer that really gets me going is Solange. I wasn't a fan of most of her earlier work, but the True EP was in my top 5 of last year.

Just say.. she is not your cup of tea but Solange being better than Janelle? eek JUST NO.

And I like Solange but NO. Not even a competition.

Just say.. she is not your cup of tea but Solange being better than Janelle? eek JUST NO.

And I like Solange but NO. Not even a competition.

So Monae is more your cup of tea. But why do you have to negate Klyph's opinion? Reasons for it were given, Klyph's heightened expectations based on related artists Klyph likes that Monae apparently didn't fulfill, Klyph's clearly stated feelings in response to Monae's performance style. But the conclusion isn't the same as yours, so "JUST NO"?

Monae's fans on this site (not just you) seem to want reasons for someone's musical preferences, but when people try to explain not liking Monae, they don't accept it. It just seems wrong to me. Sometimes people have "reasons" for the music they like, but most of the time people just like or don't like things, and reasons are something you construct later. Much of it really comes down to intangibles and ineffables--you either feel an artist or you don't. Should people who don't feel her just be quiet?

I still haven't listened to Janelle Monae. I realize that some people really like her, but some of her fans probably are not doing her any favors here. When I finally do listen, I don't think I want to post my opinion here. Because I know whatever it is will be difficult to explain, and I'd hate to have someone else tell me why they think I don't like her. They'll probably be wrong.

Based on my reading on Prince.org (and elsewhere, too): When I do listen, I'll go in assuming she is authentic, can sing, and is creative--not exactly rare traits, really. I'll also go in assuming that she is a strong black woman who thinks outside the box--admirable. I'll know that she's been endorsed by many prominent musical figures, some of whom I enjoy and others of whom I merely respect for their contributions to music whether I particularly care for them or not. I'll also know she's been endorsed by many orgers, some of whom routinely say interesting things about music and whose opinions I respect. I'll also know other orgers about whom I feel similarly will have not endorsed Monae. I'll also be aware that she's an attractive woman who some people seem to think is somewhat controversial in her style of dress and image. And I'll also know that there seems to be some difference of opinion about whether she's a compelling performer on stage.

And not a single bit of that should matter when it comes to whether I like the music. I know of a lot of artists who seem like interesting personalities, admirable, strong, independent, possessed of their own artistic vision. Others seem personally uninteresting, without any clear vision.

But when it comes to the actual music, my reactions don't always match up to my view of the artist as a person. Nor should they, in my opinion. There are great people who make sucky music, and great musicians who suck as people. And--and here's the kicker--great artists whose art I just don't care for and hacks whose work I love.

Now, someone might be able to point out things about an artist's work that help me move toward a different appreciation for it, and I might change over time so that my responses to an artist's work evolve and I learn to like something I didn't. But if someone told me "JUST NO" concerning my honest reaction to an artist's work, it would be unlikely to do anything but make it harder for me to hear the artist in question. And if you really believe Monae deserves to be heard, why discourage people by dismissing the opinions of those who have listened and considered her work?

But when it comes to the actual music, my reactions don't always match up. Someone might be able to point out things about the music that I've missed, and I might change in various ways over time so that my reaction to the music changes. But saying to me "JUST NO" will certainly not cause an overwhelming transformation in my perspective. It's far more likely to strengthen any negative feelings I have.

Whoever did it I still stand by what I said, it lost it's funky attitude and it's just bland, especially because local DJs in my town have been making way better remixes with this jam. lol
And it doesn't matter whether Prince approved it or not if it's done by someone else it's not Prince remix period. Isn't it sort of messed up to promote it as 'Prince remix' when it's done by his employee's boyfriend? I get that they wanted to put his name on it so they could receive some blind positive feedback from P fams and get a few articles written about it. Come on though, if you're confident with your shit why not put your own name on it and expect honest reaction from the public? And if Prince wanted to help one of his employees out why couldn't he do it with his own material instead of letting Janelle deceive her fans by saying it's PRINCE remix. Of course Janelle "likes" it if it's done through her idol's request. =/

Sorry I'm honestly weirded out, knowing 1. this wouldn't have gotten the love it did from the fans if it didn't have P's name on it, and 2. Janelle and Prince are usually the ones who love preaching about real artist, real music, real musician, real attitude, and real whatever else. They're all about keeping it real. So much for that when they follow the exact same tactic as what labels like Sony is notorious for.

All we got we the track off the livestream with no credits or statement about who did what on the track. A fan ripped it and uploaded it onto Soundcloud and promoted it as such. Mind you it went up yesterday afternoon and was gone by the evening so I think someone addressed it. Then the posts from Hannah and Josh went up.
