I feel so much okay if Janelle's music is not everybody's cup of tea.. and i respect someone who states something negative about The ArchAndroid or Janelle as a female artist with reasonable arguments.. But people who just say she's got no style, or she's not authentic, or some might say she's ugly.... That's just silly, Janelle is pretty much what saves female music today, I believe the whole world can't stand Rihanna's voice, or Katy Perry's, or anybody out there in the radio for like 4 seconds... Even Beyoncé who once had a beautiful voice with sweet vocals is now doing the same songs with same R&B/tradditionl instrumentals and backbeats we saw in 4/I am Sasha Fierce which is pretty much why Beyoncé now is 2004's Beyoncé... Nothing changed, she's repeating herself in everyway... Unlike Janelle who made a very sci-fi twist on her album, just the word "Sci-fi" is meaning so much, somebody who'd buy The ArchAndroid and listen to that beautifully composed music, that space-ish sound, and then the cool/groovy sound of Tightrope for example, he'd feel the art in that, the sounds are just pure... and Original, and i care for people who bring something original each time they release an LP.. I respect Janelle and I assmue in this very moment she'd SLAY with her new album, I have this feeling that it's about TIME! razz

I agree. I dont care if she ever gets as popular as her peers.

Thats my thing...

You dont have to like her but give LEGITIMATE and INTELLIGENT reasons not some stupid shit like she is not authentic, she cant sing, she cant hold a tune, she is not creative etc when all your favorite singers cant do none of the above. Just immature reasoning. And I am not directing this at anybody this is GENERALLY speaking.

I agree

Just somebody who he will make a contribution to, help them or give advice. I get the whole "i prefer to play with women becuz they have less egos than men" but you really have to admit.....he's intimidated by male musicians especially badasses.

Can we all take a chill pill on the negative nancy stuff? The song is months away. Let's chime in once it drops.

However, I would like to ask Milty for a list of "badasses" that could possibly intimidate Prince. If such a list exists, I am sure it is an extremely short list. Really, Milty, who do you have in mind? Who's more badass than Prince? Certanily not Thom Yorke or Chris Martin. I love them both, but I wouldn't put them in Prince's league. I don't think they would place themselves there either.

As for his desire to work with women, maybe it has something to do with the "misogynistic wall of noise" he sings about on "Fixurlifeup" with 3rdeyegirl. Maybe he's interested in helping women gain a stronger foothold in the industry. As we speak, the top ten of Billboard's Hot 100 is mostly male, and three of the four female acts on the list feature male performers. Here's the list: Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk Featuring Pharrell Williams, P!nk Featuring Nate Ruess, Florida Georgia Line Featuring Nelly, Robin Thicke Featuring T.I. + Pharrell, Selena Gomez, Imagine Dragons, Icona Pop Featuring Charli XCX, Rihanna Featuring Mikky Ekko. I think most of the readers on the org would like to see more women at the forefront of the biz, so why do some of us get in a tizzy when Prince decides to work with and help women?

Peace,

My Brothers and Sisters,

Peace.

Janelle is a Masterpiece!! yes Her energy is top level and her music is amazing!! No female artist that I've heard lately sings out the conviction in her heart and soul like Janelle does. Her passion and beliefs are beautifully displayed through the creation of her music. It sounds fun, upbeat and revolutionary.

I love her style, her dance moves, her uniform, her sound and beat expressing the things she cares about. The only artist out there, imo, that can compare or exceed Janelle, right now is Prince guitar

When I first heard Janelle I noticed that I related to her in a way that I did with Prince music sun The groove felt spot on and it felt new and exciting, something setting them apart from other muscians out there. The feelings, the emotions, the message, the dilemma, the drama, and the hope that I find in Prince's music all reasonate.

They hit the target It feels like the whole chior, and many acts in a play are included with each song that these top 2 muscians create. I can't wait headbang peace heart

PREACH headbang

I'm not making a judgement on Janelle Monae. More so on Prince but not her. I don't even listen to the artists I listed anyway but I just wanted to throw examples out there. As for badasses, I mean I would love to see a jam with someone like Flea or Dave Navarro....ok maybe not Dave Navarro - hah. But you know what I mean? "real music by real musicians"? Well those guys are certified "real" musicians. Shit, I'd even take Tom Petty.

I think there is a reason why Prince prefers these young female musicians but I'd rather not say for the fear of being called sexist which I'm certainly not.

I think people feel like they HAVE to support Janelle Monet because she's a beautiful (VERY beautiful, at least to me), natural Black woman that has "style" and is doing her own thang, at least look wise. The problem for me is once you get past that, she's pretty dull. I remember when I first started reading about her and I saw pictures I thought to myself "Wow, this chick seems like she'll be doing some creative stuff." The fact that she was down with the Elephant 6 collective, which contains members of Of Montreal, one of my favorite bands, was promising. But when I listened to her it was pretty standard, nothing amazing at all. She's not a great singer, her songs are not unlike anything else popular at the moment. She doesn't even have that much charisma. She kinds has a blank stare to me, like her stage show is all forced and not fluid.

The only modern Black female performer that really gets me going is Solange. I wasn't a fan of most of her earlier work, but the True EP was in my top 5 of last year.

Actually it's not that surprising for you to say that.

I am 100% with you Nurse, hug

Since I did not knew her, I had a listen on iTunes.... "Cold War" came up as her biggest hit. confused

Her music bores me, I don't like that genre at all. Sound like the standard r'n'b plastic produced "music" you will find on VH1 (and in the night time on MTV)....

Yeah I No... I am over 40, I am too old for that. Maybe it's too "modern", I prefer old music, created the old way. wink

Yeah...no...you can't blame it on that. I'm older than you and I think she's amazing.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

she is special there is a reason why she has the respect of people like Prince, Stevie Wonder, Outkast, Cee lo and company, Erykah Badu, Kanye West, Earth Wind and Fire, Nile Rodgers, even Mick Jagger and Nas said something about their admirations for her in interviews..and the list could go forward....only some examples..

I love Janelle Monae but i've been disappointed by her live every time. Loads of energy but choreographed to death. First time I saw her she was clearly touring on the cheap, no strings or brass.... which is fine, good even if you rise to the occasion, but she went ahead and thanked her her invisible brass band during tightrope. Just went through the motions like they were there, ridiculous!

I don't mind a pop show being a pop show but don't try and pass it off like you're authentic in a way that you're clearly not. Her band seem to go through so many midi ports for each song that it ended up sounding like playback. Nothing distinctive about any of her players.

She's awesome but I just want to see her let loose, do her own Small Club!

When did I say she CAN'T sing? I said she wasn't a great singer. And why would I "research" her talent? I know about her, as I've clearly stated in my post.

If she's your cup of tea, that's cool. She's not mine. Believe me, I've listened to her. Not just the singles, but the entire album. She doesn't do it for me. It happens. I sure you don't like other artists I like. I would rather listen to Steven Wilson, or St. Vincent, Coheed & Cambria, Van Hunt or Dirty Projectors or Action Bronson, Killer Mike & EL-P, etc.

Cool cool, but what's he doing? In what capacity? Cause he's been on younger cats records before namely the common's star69 an it was hard to point to what he did? I mean if its a collab like Paradigm he did with George some of the best layers he did in like forever, I think on star69 he was more of an instrumentalist I need to read the credits. Right? I feel like he did the drum programming at the end an some vocals but between Dillard's on drums programming an bilal on vocals u can't really tell. Anyway great congrats to see Monae landed Prince, should be great because her jam with Erykah is good

I hope she throws him n a somewhat crazy/out there song like Sincerely jane. Or mushrooms &Roses...oh maker too. Its those kind of tunes tht janelle does that gets me excited about her. Songs i cant figure out which chart to put them on. I dont tuink it will be, but i hope its not a cover song. This kind of talent need not repeat what someone else already said, even if they wudda pit a spin on it....original talents like these need to work on an original piece.

Mushrooms & Roses was one of the most origina sounds i'd heard in a minute...even the lyrics were a+ to me and sold me on the rest of the project. It happened to be the second tune off the r ecord i heard....tightrope was already all over the radio. Big Boi's dow nasdaq/thong ass crack rhyme was the best of the year imo.
