Pur-lease. They had to GIVE AWAY TICKETS.

Care to sustantiate your latest party-pooping statement?

No matter, you 've lost. Your prediction of total irrelevance has not become reality, this is a guy that out-rocks legendary peers and newcomers alike any day and this getting vindicated big time. He may not be a hitmaker anymore but no one in their right mind thinks they can afford to lecture from their armchair, actually claiming some kind of superior insight ?!? like Mr. Genius BVH.

Move on -- he sure did.

This is WELL-KNOWN except to those who refuse to look at facts. Here, lemme quote from the trivia section of the first date of the tour -- and yes, this is a text repeated for many of the dates: http://www.princevault.co...il,_2013-1

Tickets for this – and all (West Coast) shows of the tour – went on sale 22 March, 2013 at 12:00 PM PST. As of Saturday 13 April, the unsold tickets were offered 50% off, with a purchase of two. Disgruntled patrons who bought tickets early at full price were also set up with an extra ticket for free. Both early shows (15 and 16 April) sold out eventually, but the late shows did not. In a last attempt to get the show sold out Prince donated 200 tickets (2 x 100 for both late shows) to charity. They were given to Portside Pub owner Mark Brand to sell via his restaurant Save-On-Meats and sold at $50 on Monday 15 April, with the proceeds going to charity.

Oh look, even when they gave a free ticket to those that had already purchased a ticket and slashed the prices, the shows STILL DID NOT SELL OUT.

No matter, you 've lost. Your prediction of total irrelevance has not become reality,

Prince is relevant? Nope, he's an oldies act. Nobody gives a fuck about him, just check the views on the 3rdeyegirl videos. This is a guy who used to sell a couple of million copies of each album, and now the FREE videos on YouTube barely reach 100,000 views. Meanwhile that Psy dude had how many views on that one video of his?

Valid points.
It boggles my mind how Pirnce thougt that gagging youtube videos of him 10+ years ago was a good idea. He's virtually dissapeared off of one of the most accessed conduits that peope use today for discovering new music.

I had no idea about the concerts not selling out, but I'm glad this happened. Prince needs a reality wakeup call. Nobody should have to shell out the kind of money. He's jipped enough people over the years with his silly ass webpages--he needs to sober up and and understand that if he's going to go it alone as a business man, then the product and pricing needs to be rational too. What a douche.

Bart, the amount of time you spend on here, you clearly still give a fuck about him. Even if it is something of a toxic relationship.

(Do appreciate your fact-checking though!)

Im not positive but pretty sure the Denver late show I attended was sold out. I don't know, not disappointed in spending the money as got to see a great show up close. If I could have got them cheaper by waiting it would have been cool to know but whatever. I d/ld enough of his music to make it up I guess.

I have no interest in arguing with Bart about Prince's relevance--I would be truly surprised to ever see Prince anywhere on a pop singles chart again, and based on the attitude toward much of current pop music expressed on the .org, I don't think very many people on here care about his "relevance." I'm fine with him being, for most people, an "oldies act." He needs to make enough money to stay alive, and I can't see that as being a problem. I like most of the new music, but it's no skin off my nose if others don't, or if they never even hear it. Most people never did hear most of it anyway, even when he was at his commercial peak. They just heard the singles.

I do wonder about what all those youtube views really mean, though. Obviously, more people have seen Psy's recent vids than the 3rdEyeGirl videos--but there are only records of my (for example) having seen Prince's things once, since I saved them. Meanwhile, I've clicked on "Gentleman" at least three times (I watched it, then showed it to my wife, and then to my daughter), and since my daughter felt it was absolutely necessary to figure out how do the stupid dance, at least part of "Gangnam Style" has come over the internet to my home at least 10 times. Psy is way ahead of Prince as far as the Yahoo bean-counters are concerned in my home. But I know I've listened to some of the 3rd Eye Girl vids (transferred to audio) at least 30 times, probably more. I'm not saying Prince is beating Psy in public awareness--but what do high numbers of streams really mean? Did those of you who like the 3rd Eye Girl stuff just keep streaming the videos, and hope they didn't just disappear from youtube and vimeo? How many people watch and say "Can you believe this?" and show or pass on (or put up a link) to 20, or a hundred more people (or much higher numbers) and nobody like the track? A view is just a view, and it's tough to know what it means.

And, if you're just a typical person (and don't already know about recent Prince developments or pay attention to music blogs and news), how do you even find out about the new material? I know people have held up signs that say 3rdeyegirl.com or the like at the Kimmel or Fallon performances, but Prince doesn't talk about anything and the hosts yell the site name during outros. Typing "Prince" or "Prince music" doesn't get any mention of the 3rd Eye material on the first several youtube results pages (beyond some Billboard performance clips, which don't mention the new songs, really)--though it looks like there might be some unreleased tracks right now. Those typical, non-musically-minded people are the ones that latch onto things like Psy. I'm sure millions of those views came from people who don't spend much time thinking about music or watching other music videos on youtube. They're just people who catch whatever video wave is currently going by--that one happened to be an actual commercially-released musical product, so it became a hit! The (hypothetical--I don't know if such a video exists) video of the bird landing on the newscaster's head that those same people were looking at the next week didn't appear on the charts.

I actually like both of the aformentioned Psy songs okay, but I just can't really take the youtube counts as showing the same sort of thing about a song's popularity as sales once did. The choice to stream a particular song is just different than the choice to purchase it. It's like if my decision to not change a radio station were somehow counted as a strong endorsement of a song--there's thousands of songs I'll listen to if they pop up on the radio or on the recommended list on the side of my computer screen that I wouldn't buy even if I'd won the Powerball lottery this past weekend.

About the actual subject of the thread--I do hope new album(s) are coming soon. And that Prince has settled on a means of distribution that he'll stick with for a while, instead of continuing to act like he has to reinvent the wheel every time he wants us to hear something. Hint: It's supposed to be round. An octagon, or maybe even a hexagon or pentagon might work in a pinch, but I sometimes feel he's going with a square or even a triangle model.

Dude someboy did the math on the approximate money made on this little tour and it came out to around $6,000,000 for a 4-5 weeks work. Even after paying all costs (tour bus/airplane, roadies, sound guys, hotels, etc. etc.) Prince still made a nice hunk of cash in that time!!! How much have u made in that same amount of time??? lol razz lol

^^ this.

He just needs to tour lots, employ real staff who can oversee the sale of his CDs at the shows & his official site and deal direct with iTunes for digital. Forget the rest of it. Then he can control it all like he wants. He's the best but he's not getting hits any more
Unless he does a watered down version of himself ala Robin Thicke with radio in mind.

Most fans know Prince and his ways, and knows how fickle he can be, so I wouldn't get mad at them for their opinions, because they are only speaking the truth of which they know of. Come on, we all know that the man is very fickle, and stuck in his ways, and we all know that Prince can pick up something one minute, and drop it the next in a heart beat. Like I said, we will all just have to wait and see how this venture goes, because nothing with Prince is a sure thing.

I'm very intrigued by the part about releasing stuff by associated artists and side-projects, something Prince almost entirely gave-up since 1995. My opinion is that this is getting nowhere, that we'll get a new Prince album and then either Prince will get mad at them for not promoting the album as much as he wanted or he'll just change his mind and move on to something else as he always do. But who knows, maybe it's time Prince sticks to a label for some time and goes back to having his own sublabel as in the good old days wink

I hope so. In my case, I need it specially, since I almost don't use the internet to listen to music, and I'd be very glad to see Prince with a record company that releases physical albums which one can buy. Like in the good old days, indeed!

Hang on, did you just compare Prince to Psy? Psy's on what, sixth album? That's like Prince on Purple Rain. Videos might have gotten a few views if there was a youtube back in those days. Of course Prince isn't relevent like, insert any current pop act, because he's in his mid 50's.

Let's get together in 25 years and compare Prince now to Psy then.

Well don't get too xcited: no one said all the releases had to be physical. By the way you know within 10 years physical records will have totally disappeared and the only way to purchase music will be digital, so you should go digital or you'll end-up stuck with pre-2015 music wink

Prince has not made you happy since approximately 1988. That is 25 years ago. Here, let me type it so that you really understand:

PRINCE HAS NOT MADE YOU HAPPY IN TWENTY FIVE YEARS.

PRINCE HAS NOT MADE YOU HAPPY IN A QUARTER OF A CENTURY.

And yet you come here quite often, for no other reason than to degrade anything and everything Prince does.

IT HAS BEEN TWENTY FIVE YEARS SINCE HE'S DONE ANYTHING YOU LIKED.

Dude, you are so owned it isn't even funny. Why have you been torturing yourself FOR A QUARTER OF A CENTURY?

Please leave this site and never come back. Not for our sakes - FOR YOURS.

Times have changed. Big music companys (do they still exist?) don't have the same clout that they used to have. A business model like Kobalt's which seems to understand that in this digital age, the role of a music company should be very limited. I mean really, what does "distribution" mean in a time when as soon as the music is put on the internet, it's instantly available to everyone? So hopefully this will work out because I think this kind of partnership is what Prince wanted all along. If it works, maybe it will give Prince some stability on when, where, and how his music is released.
