I was 13 & Kiss was released, i saw the vidoe...aint been the same since! Saved up my pocket money & bought Parade. Then i read an article (i still have it) that listed all his albums, b sides, 12", associated artists etc...started to write lists, save, ask friends & family to get me albums for my birthday/xmas. The day Lovesexy came out i went to the record shop after school with empty pockets & just stood there staring at the album! Haha! Felt very sorry for myself leaving empty handed bawl

What magazine was that article from? I bought all the Jet, Black Beat, and Rolling Stones magazines he was featured in to read those articles. That one would have been very helpful back in the day.

I had to dig out my old scrap books to find it (i've got a few dozen!) It was a little uk mag (a bit like smash hits) called No.1 (number one) the date is 11th april '87.

"We just let people talk & say whatever they want 2 say. 9 times out of 10, trust me, what's out there now, I wouldn't give nary one of these folks the time of day. That's why I don't say anything back, because there's so much that's wrong" - P, Dec '15

Funny how similar these stories are. smile

My first was 1999 in early 1989. Something in the water got me hooked and then it was Purple Rain and Parade and the early albums in rapid succession...

"something In The Water" was a song I didn't care for much until I was older. It's a very moody piece of music. It's something I listen to once and a while still, especially with the stereo I pieced together from pawn shop trolling.

Yes, actually I hated it when I first heard it. But it intrigued me, it was so weird with all the screaming... so different from the stuff playing on the radio...

The Hits 1, c.1997/98 (mainly because I liked the song "1999")

Then I think I got Batman and Newpower Soul not long after (I didn't know Newpower Soul was new at the time, I just found it in a bargain basement bin and thought what-the-heck?!)

Rave was the first album I remember actively anticipating, seeking out the preview reviews, buying it the week it came out etc.

And have been hooked in ever since...

I know. The podcasts betray you.

I feel I know you better than my wife!

The Batman Sojndtrack. Someone traded it to me for sone A Weird al Tape I had. Best teade of any sort i ever made. Gve me a chance to give a prince record the intimate listen jt deserves. Helped me notice the finer touches...before i knew it i was record store shopping and reading liner notes.

Bluu

In 1982, when I was 12, I wanted to buy the 1999 album, but I somehow wound up first purchasing the 2-for-1 commercial cassette tape that had both Dirty Mind and Controversy albums on it (the first time I ever read liner notes in full.) That tape was my security blanket, for real. Can't believe I did not wear a hole in it. I still have it around here somewhere just for the sentimental value. My first actual vinyl album was 1999, which I bought shortly thereafter.
