Rave. I was 5 and in a record store in Uptown with my dad, and I saw the picture on the cover and was astonished by it. I asked my dad who it was and he said, "oh...that's Prince" and I begged for him to buy it for me. smile

1999.

I heard "Delirious" on a neighbor's radio when I was 10 yrs old, and I was a goner.

That was the only reason I liked the first Batman. Other than that I was a little unimpressed.

So fortunate to have taken the journey with Prince from the very beginning.

Too bad it had to end (4 me).

I miss the glory days, but I'm happy I was there to witness so many historic moments.

and I had the book cover! biggrin

Ah, the early days...

I remember watching the early Prince performances on TV shows like Midnight Special, American Bandstand, Saturday Night Live(just recently watched it again ), Solid Gold, American Music Awards, The Grammys, etc

Anyway my first song was the 7' of Soft and Wet (stole it from my cousin) and the first album was Prince. I thought the back cover of the Prince album was the coolest shit ever. A naked person riding on a horse with wings. Amazing !

Purple Rain: purchased the cassette a few weeks after release in 1984, cost $5.99. (Don't know why I remember the price?) Liked the album a lot on first listen, Album sounded like nothing I had heard before, i thought at the time the music was dark, dirty, and quite complex compared to what else was being played on our boom boxes. My friends joked that I bought it & they didn't dig the music at all. But once the album/movie exploded in popularity it felt pretty awesome 2 be somehow apart of prince becoming star. Haven't skipped an album release since.

1999. I bought it at the wrekka stow with money I earned cutting grass. I brought it to a Jr. High dance, thank goodness I did cuz that party was dead till I got there. All the teachers/chaperones were outside most of the dance so they didn't hear the dirty bits.
All the kids thanked me for bringing Prince to the party. Everyone had a blast. biggrin
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

I first properly discovered him when I was about 13 and the album for me was The Hits/B-Sides Box set. After that I had to have everything and have bought every album and DVD since. I've seen the Musicology show 3 times Live and I got to Welcome 2 Chicago. Hope to see him again soon smile

You guys Rock! I feel priviledged(?) to be among so many folks here who appreciated his craft from the early days, and also with those who were lucky enough to pick up on a certain song, a certain SOUND, that happened to click at that moment in time. I'm watching some documentary on Crackle right now about his early days, and it makes me miss those days when u didn't know about a new album until a single was released for it and I happened to hear it in the radio.

One of the best things i remember about the early days is the release of the b sides. Man it was so cool to hear thru the grapevine that there was a new Prince song out then finding out that the song wasn't on any album. For a Prince(and music) fanatic that feeling was wonderful. For me, especially when i herd songs like How Come U Don't Call Me, Irresistible Bitch, 17 days, Hello and Another Lonely Christmas for the first time. I have extremely fond memories of that period and i wish Prince's new music, and new music in general, gave me those same feelings. Im not saying that Prince's newer music isn't any good, I'm just saying that that 80's period was different and a person kinda had to be there.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

It wasn't until Sign O' The Times that I got privy to B sides, when I got the singles that had La La La He He He and Shockadelica. I wish I'd have known sooner. How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore was a fave of mine back then and I only knew it through radio.

"Lovesexy" in '88, the day after the lovesexy concert was broadcast in the UK.
Wasnt sure about it at first, sounded totally different to what i was listening to before,(its now my favourite album).
Couple of weeks later I got sacked from my job, went to the music shop with my last wage and spent £80 on every album previous to Lovesexy on cassette. My mum went mental!!

I had just started a part time job when my first copy of the Lovesexy LP wore out and bought a new copy out of my first check, along with Paula Abdul's "Shut Up And Dnace" remix LP of hits.

Funny how similar these stories are. smile

My first was 1999 in early 1989. Something in the water got me hooked and then it was Purple Rain and Parade and the early albums in rapid succession...

I was 13 & Kiss was released, i saw the vidoe...aint been the same since! Saved up my pocket money & bought Parade. Then i read an article (i still have it) that listed all his albums, b sides, 12", associated artists etc...started to write lists, save, ask friends & family to get me albums for my birthday/xmas. The day Lovesexy came out i went to the record shop after school with empty pockets & just stood there staring at the album! Haha! Felt very sorry for myself leaving empty handed bawl

My first Prince album was Controversy, then I got Dirty Mind after that (I know that's the reverse of how they were released). The most recent album I got was the 2nd (self-titled) one. I have almost every Prince album except For You. It's out of print now, but I can probably find a used one somewhere.

My first album was Purple Rain. My sister bought it for me. She went to a concert where "reportedly" he pee'd on the crowd,, but thats another thread.

Anywho,, she turned me on to him by putting me in the basement with the album, her headphones and recond player.music I had to listen to it with headphones cause my mother said it was "Devils Music".evil I almost sent her into cardiac arrest when I played Darlin Nikki backwards for her. evillol

"something In The Water" was a song I didn't care for much until I was older. It's a very moody piece of music. It's something I listen to once and a while still, especially with the stereo I pieced together from pawn shop trolling.

What magazine was that article from? I bought all the Jet, Black Beat, and Rolling Stones magazines he was featured in to read those articles. That one would have been very helpful back in the day.

Check out Amazon. You can get used vinyl pretty reasonable most times. I say most, because Gold and Rainbow Children are damn expensive.
