Cleaning up an Undertaker CD .... HELP!!

Anyone got a definitive, tried & tested method for cleaning up a genuine copy of the Undertaker CD?

It was covered in a layer of shellac to prevent playback.

Just got hold of a copy, definitely the genuine article - has all the right codes in the reference ring.

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

You could try denatured or isopropyl alcohol. If it really is shellac, that will remove it. If it doesn't, it isn't shellac and you'll need to figure something else out.

methonol or isopropoyl alchohol will work

if you soak a lint free cloth in methonol the shellac will come off

just take your time and rub slowly and carefully, and let chemical science and nature work

Leave it as is, and get yourself a booted copy to listen to. No use in destroying a very rare collector's item!

Been listening to mine for years now - nail polish remover took the stuff right off with no damage to the disc at all. If you're wary about it, try it on the outer edges first (where there is no data) and see how it strips the coating away without clouding the plastic.

the main ingrediant in nail polish remover is acetone, and shellac is an ingrediant in nail polish, so that should work. but you could just buy acetone

Straight acetone would be better, because it wouldn't have all the other gook that they put in nail polish remover.

That makes sense. I was experimenting with different methods and hit on nail polish remover, since my wife did not have a can of acetone sitting around. biggrin

With all due respect.... BULLSHIT! The CD is not meant to be ruined by shellac. It is meant to be a CD that is played, that is listened to. Unplayable, it is simply a collectable coaster. Useless. Removing the shellac is not "destroying a very rare collector's item", rather, it is Restoring a very rare collector's item!

That said,

I used a product called Goo Gone. My disc plays perfectly. If/when you remove the shellac, regardless of whatever you use to do so, Be. Very. Careful. Clean the disc from the center straight out to the edge. Do not wipe in a circular motion and do not use too much force. You don't want to scratch or crack the disc as then it would be less valuable than one that still has shellac on it.

wink

Over the last 15+ years I've cleaned about 20 of these discs to make them playable and terpentine and nailpolish remover did the trick...

Just be sure not to wipe in circles but always from the center of the disc to the edge and don't get any terpentine on the front of the disc or you'll get a nice pink stain on it (this happened to the first disc I ever cleaned...)

If you need the original covers I still have the colour coded offset sheets for trade, you only need to cut them yourself...

oh and please post photos so we can see what a real one looks like with the coating. I have seen one in a shop with the coating, but I had no way to tell if it was real.
