Love the new track! Not in an earthshattering way, but just in a funky little way. cool

And good to see that they've put up a wav file. They must have paid attention to the earlier discussions about sound quality.

smile

Pretty sure this track is from the Andy Allo sessions!

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Where I had been spoiled by almost instant inspiration and ringing ears with the last few releases ("U Will B"', "Screwdriver/Screwdriver Remix", "BCW"), this one took me more time to see its charms.

My first impression was one of bewilderment. With more familiarity I find it quirky, infectious, and deceptively dense.

I'm just trying to enjoy on whatever level I'm capable of at the time, without the selfish need to become his producer. The wise old Prince of introspection is probably coming at some point (partially edited or not). But if he just wants to jam for a few, this comes off much more authentically to me than the searcher of the late 90s with his ill-fitted blue catsuit and "produced by Prince" intentions.

Perhaps he's getting his full groove back with the addition of all that he's learned since being baptized in a totally different way, even if it can't or won't yet be connected in a fuller, album way.

Or perhaps If I knew more I wouldn't even want another hit-or-miss experience?

The more I listen, the better I like this one! Probably the best of the 2013 bunch (up to now), and surely the funkiest. It reminds me a bit of George Clinton/ Parliament.

It's a Soft and Wet song -- he goes back to that basic rythmn and structure every now and then, but that's a great update, love the brass and feel.

You know, I keep hearing his new songs, and I can't believe he is releasing this crap.

Unbelievable - This is yet another boring Prince song. Not bad, not good, just blah. This track is completely forgettable. So is R&R Love Affair. Tracks so bland as to be instantly forgettable. Prince NEVER used to be this way. SAME OLD STUFF PRINCE! Come on man! How many times can you record the same song???

Lyrically these new songs are terrible....this is lazy lazy stuff. Does prince actually think that people who dug ballad of dorothy parker, condition of the heart et al are gonna appreciate this music. Where is the IQ count gone!!!..The dude used to be cerebral as well as filthy...well thats my two pence.

None of the songs you mentioned would be considered cerebral unless you mean cerebral palsy. Prince is cerebral in comparison to a lot of pop folks, but if his lyrics shouldn't make you feel like you just got some brain exercise.

Of course i dont mean cerebral palsy you twat!

If you engaged your brain you'd understand the point I was making was that prince used to be a clever and a very interesting song writer and actually both those songs i mentioned can justafiably be considered cerebral not only for their reference and imagery but also for musical composition and arrangement.

And why shouldnt lyrics make you feel like your brain just got some exercise?!! thats a pretty dense thing to say...

I'm on the side with those who feel the lyrics are a bit trite. I love the music, especially the horns. In fact, I think the lyrics do the overall song a disservice.

It may have also helped if the chorus was sung in a lower register or in some way different from the other verses. I don't know, maybe I've been on "here" too long; I swear I wasn't always this critical. smile

Please keep your boyfriend away from me

Cuz I just don't want to fight

I'll not take responsibility

For where you sleep tonight

Don't ask for my opinion

Cuz I just can't hold my tongue

But under his dominion

You won't be having fun

He sees you as possession

When I just see a queen

Closer to perfection

Than any I've ever seen

Please keep your boyfriend away from me

Cuz I just don't want to fight

I'll not take responsibility

For where you sleep tonight

From what your body told me

You and I would get along

If I were you I'd hold me

All else would just be wrong

With the deepest mark of magic

My name upon your walls

For him it must be tragic

But the bestest of them all I am

So...

Please keep your boyfriend away from me

Cuz I just don't want to fight

I'll not take responsibility

For where you sleep tonight

Hmm. I don't mind this song at all, it rolls along nicely. But as littlejim said, lyrically, where has the guy that wrote 'The Ballad of Dorothy Parker' gone? Big fucking difference.

Dorothy was a waitress on the promenade
She worked the night shift
Dishwater blonde, tall and fine
She got a lot of tips
Well, earlier I'd been talkin' stuff
In a violent room
Fighting with lovers past
I needed someone with a quicker wit than mine
Dorothy was fast
Well, I ordered, "Yeah, let me get a fruit cocktail, I ain't to hungry"
Dorothy laughed
She said "Sounds like a real man to me"
Kinda cute, you want to take a bath?
(do you want to, do you want to, bath)
I said "Cool, but I'm leaving my pants on" (what she say?)
"'cause I'm kind of going with someone"
She said "Sounds like a real man to me"
"Mind if I turn on the radio?"
"Oh, my favorite song" she said
And it was Joni singing "Help me I think I'm falling"

The phone rang and she said
"Whoever's calling can't be as cute as you"
Right then I knew I was through
(Dorothy Parker was cool)
My pants where wet, they came off
But she didn't see the movie
Cause she hadn't read the book first
Instead she pretended she was blind
An affliction brought on by a witch's curse
Dorothy made me laugh (ha ha)
I felt much better so I went back
To the violent room (tell us what you did)
Let me tell you what I did

I took another bubble bath with my pants on
All the fighting stopped
Next time I'll do it sooner
This is the ballad of Dorothy Parker

Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker
Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker
Well
Dorothy Parker, Dorothy Parker
Well

?

Dug it on first listen. I don't see how anyone could really call it crap...I think we've all heard much worse. Prince has been pretty consistent this year with what he is releasing so I'm really excited for this upcoming year. Plus he looked bomb as hell at the Grammys.

Mate, you dont quite get it do you...

Your point, quoted lyrics and 'eye roll' hardly undermine's the point made that prince is a fucking lazy song writer these days and the case being that 'Boyfriend ' is just another example of this.

Your Example of 'It' as a more direct song with simple lyrics is completely misused. Yeah its simple, its supposed to be - but its also perverse, psychological and emotionally charged - AND ITS these essental elements that have been missing from his work for roughly 20 years.

Wow. "It" does a great job of recreating the obsession and urgency of needing sex. It's wayyyy better than "Boyfriend."

But even if you don't buy the psychological & atmospheric plunge into the one-track nymphomaniac mind created by the music, delivery, lyrical repetition and the simple primal directness of "It," the point is this: RANGE.

We already know Prince can create songs on the "lower" end of the spectrum, so when people question where are his elevated lyrics, they are questioning his current expression of range. And one song can't demonstrate range so I have no idea why people think pulling an isolated song from the catalog is a good rebuttal.

The reality is if we put all these new songs together to demonstrate current range NOT ONE will match Anna Stesia, Lady Cab Driver, LIttle Red Corvette, Strange Relationship, Dorothy Parker, 17 Days, etc.

Agreed. Its cleverly formal and crowdpleasing, sounds like he edited himself more carefully this time (but still retained the few quirks, like the smurff voice ince BCW).
