I didn't buy the video and honestly I don't care about seeing it. I didn't even visit the website. After he didn't perform on the Grammys, I was done (although I LOVED seeing him there with his hood and all cool )

It was a big let down to find it was going to be on a site for pay-per-download as opposed to being broadcast. It's not "LIVE" to me unless I watch it while it's going on. But ok, semantics.

The way the pitch was done just made the whole anticlimatic.

Now, had he let it be a surprise, it would have been different. I know Frank Ocean did SNL and then immediately uploaded a video for fans right after and it created a tone of excitement and got a lot of press and Twitter action. Ocean has done stuff like that several times and it's well coordinated.

This just felt like a trick. Saying "watch live" is different from a video shot live. And then he doesn't even just release it to the world on YouTube. I've never paid for a video and I don't intend to.

A song? Yes, a real feature-length film, yes?

Videos should be part of advertising to get people interested in buying the music or following an artist's career. A pay-per-view video doesn't even have the power to go viral. So, once again, Prince is limiting his scope. This is just all kinds of wrong from a marketing standpoint.

I hear that!

But, i bought the video cuz i'm a lifelong fan.

I, also, honestly don't think Prince will ever "get it", either. That's unfortunate.

"Grab what U can, U'll never get another chance!" -(perhaps)-0=(+>

Yeah!

After the first (Prince) solo, it's like he's gigglin'at'cho'dumass for actually payin' for this shit!

Loved the musical portion! There needn't be any worthless extras!

Bart, you are making yourself look even sillier than I thought possible. What fuels these constant attacks on everything? Why do you even bother?

It seems to me like Prince must be doing something right for you to put so much effort into attacking it.

My suggestion: Focus on unreleased music & set up a subscription program where I don't have to go through the process of paying 1.77$ for every track. That gets old quick.

I like that idea only people got burned with the $77 Lotusflower subscription..

Now an option to buy a 5 or 10 song pack would be great.. pay 8.80 via paypal and get a 10 song credit towards 3rdeyegirl.com song purchases so you can just get them as they go without having to redo the paypal thing would be great...

OR even the option to buy just $$ credits on the site.. Preload $10 on the site and as new material comes out then u just use your credit...

That way if Prince changes his mind along the way, it's easier for npg records to refund whatever $$ left of peeps credits to their paypal accounts without occurring any addl fees...

Smarty here wink

OK. I finally saw the video.

1. Seeing the 3rd eye girl band made me nostalgic for Wendy & Lisa.

2. Wow walking down that hallway ...memories of the Celebration.

3. I find it ODD and a bit sad that Prince appeared to have no chemistry with the 3rd Eye Girl Band. He's playing his guitar in one space and they are in another area playing behind him and I literally saw no synergy. Now, perhaps I'm spoiled because the beauty of seeing him play with the Revolution or Sheila E is that there is this camarderie, this exchange of energy, this call and response, back and forth. He exchanges looks with them and does not just stare out into a darkened abyss as he does in this video, oops "film" wink

For some reason to me he just looked so lonely playing his heart out othere; I mean the kiddies -- oops, teens, didn't connect with him (I don't know if they were told not to look at him, but they were dancing in the dark and not watching him at all) and the band didn't. There were three pools of isolation. That's what stood out most to me. (I'm weird). It wasn't right, to me. I like seeing Prince connect and I think his personality comes out more when he does. I know this band isn't a band of peers like the Revolution or Sheila, though.

5. I LOVED the hand of Prince extended through smoke and beckoning. Whoever said it reminded them of Fred Armisen on SNL was spot on! Too Funny.

6. Is anybody really going to do that dance? It was cheesy to me...dated... look like something from the classic days of American Bandstand.

Overalll, I glimpsed something I have never really liked about Prince ... and that is his desire to be "cool." I saw this when he attempted rap, and wearing braids in his hair during the NYE on-demand concert in 1999, and here I see it in his trying to create a dance and using ONLY dancers 3 decades younger. I really loathe the age-restricted "concert." It's just trying to hard for the wrong base and insulting the multi-generational fans who've been with him for years (Or maybe not -- I know how important it is for him to appear timeless and not dated. That's been an issue, for sure).

But does he really need to launch a new dance or contrive a youth appeal? When he was his coolest, he really didn't pander...he was just himself at the height of his enjoyment and skill.

So, anyway, I enjoy the song, mostly cause of the guitar and chorus, but I'm pretty glad I didn't buy or download the video. Seeng it once is enough for me.

This song is HOT! Screwdriver is hotter than the stolen tools/screwdrivers I get on the cheap at the flee market. Sure the video is corny and dancing silly but the song. No over production, good and catchy heavy guitar song. I like all version but Screwdriver remix is my favorite.

My responses in bold below.

OK. I finally saw the video.

2. Wow walking down that hallway ...memories of the Celebration.

I thought the same thing~!

3. I find it ODD and a bit sad that Prince appeared to have no chemistry with the 3rd Eye Girl Band. He's playing his guitar in one space and they are in another area playing behind him and I literally saw no synergy.

You're right on there.

6. Is anybody really going to do that dance? It was cheesy to me...dated... look like something from the classic days of American Bandstand.

Oh, they were dancing. I thought there were some roaches at the Park, and instead of paying Orkin to come out there, he invited some youngins to stomp on em'

You are spot on here. He's gonna be 55 soon. He's been indifferent to his longtime fans for far too long. Sad thing is, I, like most of us, don't care. We always come back.

But does he really need to launch a new dance or contrive a youth appeal? When he was his coolest, he really didn't pander...he was just himself at the height of his enjoyment and skill.

contrive a youth appeal? More like just CONTRIVED!

So, anyway, I enjoy the song, mostly cause of the guitar and chorus, but I'm pretty glad I didn't buy or download the video. Seeng it once is enough for me.

Right again! I will be fine if I never see it again. Would like the audio, but the first 2:30 of the video is unwatchable. Boring Skit that meant nothing.

Last I checked there was no preview of the video. Or any of the songs, for that matter.

So you're still forced to pay for something without knowing what you're gonna get.

You may have been forced. I have the free will to choose.

Are you really comparing $100 & $77 subscription fees where you don't know exactly what that will get you to .88 & 1.77 single track prices where you know it will get you the one track? Really?!?

I'm surprised. You usually try a little harder than that to at least be logical with your sadomasochistic bitchfests.

Or heard any of his albums before you bought them - especially back in the day.

Spending money on a PHYSICAL item is a whole lot different than on a digital item. And most of those videos are longform videos. Also, those things get reviewed, so you knwo what you're in for.

Oh, and back int eh day radio used to premiere albums in my neck of the woods, often playing tracks from them about a week or two in advance. I'd taped almost all of D&P from the radio premiere two weeks before the release and had played that tape a lot before the album appeared in stores.

Also, back then you'd know you'd get quality product. Nowadays we live in the era of "Purple & Gold" and other shitastic output. Albums so bad Prince can't be arsed to promote them or play songs from them live.

I'm pretty sure this video has been reviewed. All. Over. This. Thread.

I also figure you know you way around the internets well enough to hear these before buying if you want.

You are SO losing your touch. I'm disappointed...

I still doubt that he will release this unedited, because he played some cover versions, and that means he has to pay royalties if he wants to sell the video.

If it's edited, I'll stick to the unedited bootleg video in perfect quality.

There were covers on Sign "O" The Times (movie), The Undertaker, Rave Un2 The Year 2000, One Nite Alone DVD...

I'm assuming he paid royalties on those.

Now that a few days have passed: did we watch the video a.k.a. film?

Did we notice the similarity to the earlier leaked snippets of rehearsal footage?

Did we notice the lack of shots showing the crowd and the band at the same time?

Can we conclude anything about the performance?

Am I seriously seeing bitching here regarding the prices?

0.88 cents for the song in the first place is pittance. It equates to about 50p. And you want a free video for 0.88 cents too?

The video itself is only $1.77, by my reckoning about £1.00. Hardly an excessive spend. And needless to say, you are not forced to buy. If you're happy with the song for 0.88 you're welcome to settle for that. The film is merely a nice bonus for those interested.

I've purchased everything Prince has to offer on that site and it's barely the price of a pint of beer at my local. I know what I'd rather have.

Prince actually delivers a good value, simple, transparent site to deliver his music and people here still complain. I had issues with the Lotusflower site and the subscription fees, but not this.

I could care less if it was 88 cents or a million dollars. From a marketing standpoint, Prince is headed in a direction that is not going to help. He really should put videos on a website to watch for free in decent, but not HD quality, and then sell physical DVD of all his old videos.

Owning a DVD with all the videos over the years would be great. Charging for downloads is kinda dumb. I never intended to bitch about the price. I am just bitching about the concept of charging a download fee for something that many have not seen yet.

The word has already gotten out that the non-musical aspects of the video are all typical Prince cringe-worthy moments. He should really just do performance videos if he's not willing to at least hire a struggling writer to come with something better than 18 to 21 year olds stomping on fireants.

Why the hate for downloads? Physical media is dying, time to get with the times. The problem isn't that there is only a download, the problem is the quality.
