NPGMC "Promo" Releases

This is maybe a stupid question:

I used to be an NPGMC member back in the day and of course I was downloading the music. I remember that the music was available in mp3... and I think the bitrate wasn't very high. The monthly audio show was maybe lower than the additional 3 to 5 extra tracks every month.

some of the stuff out of that aera is nowadays sold on ebay from time to time as cd's with pretty nice covers (NPGMC promo): slaughterhouse, c-note, xpectation... some tracks as cdsingles too.

Now the question: THIS is straight bootleg stuff, isn't it? I'm curious because the items go for pretty big money!

Also a cardsleeve "goldnigga" sold for 70 to 90 dollars a few weeks ago. I'm sure that this IS/was a bootleg. The official 2 different versions were always in jewel case.

So... somebody is pressing the original NPGMC mp3's to CD and sells it, right? There weren't any physical promos during that aera, correct?

The only 4 official CD releases with NPGMC tracks are:

-daisy chain

-When will we b paid?

-supercute

-peace

...all of them with a b-side

(that's that rare stuff... being sold only in the US during 2001 tour, correct?)

Of course the NPGMC music was also heavily bootlegged around the time when NPGMC was open. But the releases I am talking about seem to be newer generation. Some of them with nice NPGMC style cardsleeve covers and NPG logos. These are fakes, right?

Any answer from one of you crazy prince.org Prince music collectors is appreciated.

Thank you, funkateers!

i noticed a lot of npgmc bootlegs. afaik there were no pressed boots, so it seems someone is just burning discs at home and printing artwork themselves on a home printer. avoid at all costs. complete rip off

Thanx! I was thinking the same. Strange thing about these boots is that some of them are even listed on discogs!: label NPG.

The Chocolate Invasion was a proper album released through NPGMC that was a collection of previously released material. Some of those songs are alternate versions to the monthly releases that came earlier. So, while that collection of songs is official, anyone selling a CD is selling a bootleg. The album was download only. Another similar collection, The Slaughterhouse, was also released as a download-only collection. See:

Thank you for all your answers!

Another Slaughterhouse CD went yesterday for 80$ and a 10000wallpaper cd that ends in 4days is already over 100$!!!

These high & hillarious Prices really made me curious! Who are the people that bit on these releases such high prices!!!?? this is really crazy.

I mean I also used to pay a lot of money for bootlegs or rare LPs back in the day. But spending some $ was very often the only way to discover new and rare songs. It changed a lil bit with the internet...

smile

But these dudes on ebay make serious $ with these fakes!!!! damn! every CD goes for 50$ and more! Maybe people think that these CDs really are official promo releases... don't know!?

Oh yeah that would have been a very nice 7CD collection for sure.

What gets me about these auctions is - if these people bidding these ridiculous prices are such huge fans, why don't they know these CD-Rs are sourced from 128kpbs mp3s?

I can think of one "official promo release" from that time. It was a 5 track "One Nite Alone Live EP" and it was sent to radio stations during the ONA tour. I believe it was a CD-R, even if some state it was a CD. It circulates as "Indianapolis EP" as well.

It has "Xenophobia", "Muse 2 The Pharaoh", "Mellow", "The Other Side Of The Pillow" and "Strange Relationship" on it. A pretty good selection of songs and the performances are as good as it got during the tour.

The ones that really irritate me are when I find the Ahdio shows online at anything other than 128 kbps. Someone bothered to re-rip them at 320 or 256 for whatever reason.

They were online in 128k and 256k as high and low files. Also high and low bit videos so the 256k are likely real

If you're going to make some changes to the files then you're better of coding them at a higher rate again (even if the original rate would be fairly low like 128). For example if you cut segments out of the files or boost bass / treble then you're better off doing that. You should do it if you want to avoid adding further compression effects to an already compressed source.

The individual songs were made available in 256, but the Ahdio shows were only in 128.
