Prince to Be Honored at Billboard Music Awards on May 19
The 2013 Billboard Music Awards are returning to Las Vegas on Sunday, May 19 and will honor the legendary artist Princeduring a live ABC broadcast from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Prince will be honored with the Billboard Icon Award and is set to deliver what will likely be an unforgettable performance during the broadcast, produced by Don Mischer and sponsored by Chevrolet and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
The "Purple Rain" singer-songwriter-musician follows the 2012 Icon recipient, Stevie Wonder, who received a multi-tiered tribute led by Alicia Keys.
Also at last year's event, Adele dominated with twelve awards, including Top Artist , Pop Artist and Female Artist, while LMFAO followed with six nods, including for Hot 100 Song of the Year ("Party Rock Anthem"). The show featured over 15 live performances from some of the biggest names in music, including Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Usher and Justin Bieber.
The star-studded telecast resulted in a ratings win for ABC, attracting its second-largest audience since 2003 and trumping NBC's season finale of "Celebrity Apprentice" by 27% among all age groups.
The awards will reflect Billboard's chart rankings based on key fan interactions with music, including album sales and downloads, track downloads, radio airplay and touring as well as streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Vevo, Youtube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound. The awards will be based on the reporting period of Feb. 27, 2012 through Feb. 24, 2013. Top artists will be recognized in a variety of genres, including R&B, Rap, Pop, Country, Rock, Latin and Alternative.

2013 is going to be big for Prince. Along the way, he will be honored with the Billboard Icon Award on May 19th. The Icon will be performing on the Award Show As well.
Billboard made the announ...e earlier.
Stevie Wonder received the Icon Award last year from Alicia Keys. The show will air on ABC and takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Congrats to the purple one for racking up another achievement. We personally cannot wait for the performance, which we are sure will be amazing!

Congrats Prince...you deserve whatever you get. MJ was a brilliant singer/dancer...best of all time, however, that's all he was. Let's not compare him to Prince, best musician of all time, but rather, compare him to someone like Sammy Davis Jr (who I don't hear anyone calling a musical genius). |

Yes! An award / career recap + live performance are the perfect set up for a tour & album. It reminds me of how he orchestrated Musicology around his Grammy performance & RnR Hall of Fame induction--it was something he reportedly sat down in planned in advance. And if I recall, he promised in 2004 that "something big" was coming, too. I'm also reminded of when he did American Idol around the time of 3121, two songs from that album if I remember correctly and holy macaroni that was AWESOME. (Also a nice reminder when watching a global karaoke TV show to see a REAL performer.) Best part was when I think Ryan Seacrest went up and hoped to stick a microphone in front of the Purple Yoda's face, but Prince split the fudge out of there pronto after the performance.

Maybe so, but that's the entertainment industry, alliances are fleeting. When there's something in it for both them, any past is quickly forgotten, as will be the case after 19th May.
That Prince deserves this type award is not the question, can he leverage on it to bring his music vision to a wider audience and I dont necessarily mean charts.

You know, he just performed in mpls in front of 200 people where he was in negotiations to perform on the biggest tv show in europe which takes place tonight in germany in front of 10 million viewers, so.... He also released RNR affair here in germany and switzerland and performed it on tv in the US....

Intersting take. I thought the Idol performance was awful and a real low point for him as far as TV appearances go. He looked horrible, sounded worse and added in the dancing twins to add extra cheese to the whole thing. And not a live instrument in sight. Then again I hate the show and that's pretty much the nature of it anyway so maybe it's ust me but the whole affair seemed, well, a bit beneath him and i didn;t think he really delivered at all that night. |

The best part of Prince's surprise AI per4mance was seeing Simon sit there sulking while Prince stole his spotlight. Also seeing Paula Abdul jump on top of the table dancing in awe of Princey.....

This sounds promising. Hopefully Prince will subcribe to the mantra, "less is more" and skip the medleys and simply focus on one song (with maybe an intro or a snippet of another song) with an evocative performance. |

I've seen Prince give many cool acceptance speeches and I think this will be one of his finer moments and will not be cryptic at all.
He will be very gracious and humble and not say anything weird. Really looking forward to him getting this award.

If I can score a ticket for this ill make the trip to LV so I have to ask - does anyone think he'll do an aftershow? I figure with this residency at Rio he had to have some connections and if there's a town full of musical stars it could be an awesome show. My wife doesn't think she can get the time off so I might be flying solo. If any other Orgs are going please let me know. |

Allthough probably very iconic, I really don't like his new glasses/sheds. Can't see his eyes anymore, that sort of takes a way his personality. There is a lot of his charm gone when he's wearing that thing.
I really hope he will outgrow this phase of covering his eyes as if he's some criminal who's eyes are blocked in the media.
