Why so much angst about business as usual?

I hear what you're saying bennett. But I think that's the problem: It's all just "business as usual". I guess I'm just starting to see through the cracks a little more than when I was younger. Sure, the tracks are OK, but the game of tease just doesn't excite me anymore. Quite the opposite, I find it just annoying. But maybe I just need to take a step back from Princeworld for a while and see things from a different perspective...

Don't think its all that serious...they are not announcing any new singles. Rock & Roll Love Affair is the new single....stick with that.

These were just "bootlegs for dazzeee". Intended just for us. 3rdeyegirl said they are working on the tracks.

as usual I have the opposite view

I think prince is way too normal and these goofy promo campaigns are like the only thing interesting he does anymore. The music sure isn't interesting or daring or even remotely good in any way whatsoever.

At least he drops a cool rehearsal here and there. OF4$ and Dark were great! Bambi was ok and gives me hope that he is shooting for a decent alt rock sound with a bit of teeth. Even that shaved head chick guitar player is a nice twist from years of boring rnb r kelly fashion disaster smoothe silke wanna be's.

But again .. too bad the music is so "normal" and more importantly BORING! If he put as much wackyness in his music as he does his internet wars I would be very happy. Ultimately pulling bad remixes and horrible outtake songs off the internet a day after they are posted bothers me zero. Why? Cuz those songs sucked.

Give me a lossless flac of Go or Lust U always and pull it before I can buy or download it .. then I might be pissed.

I have a secret clone prince theory. He wants to release all his remasters together. Which means we probably have to wait another 10 years. But .. what if he has been intentionally putting out his super bad crappy songs for 20 years to hold over the fans until he can put out all the real masterpieces he is sitting on with his remasters and back catalog? What if he is waiting for the Revolution reunion until he will make money on the remaster sales instead of promoting records that just give WB a boost in sales. What if he knows his fans will buy pretty much anything so he puts together his worst outtakes from real albums in the vault and gives them to the fans to keep his lights on till the remasters are ready? What if he assembles horrible bands on purpose so that people WONT want to buy his old WB records after seeing him live?

That must be it! Cuz without WB prince has been sucking pretty bad for a long time. In fact sucking is prince new normal. C'mon prince do something not normal for a change. Pretty please! Rock n Roll love affair is about as normal of a song as it gets. There isn't even anything original about it let alone off beat or wierd. It's just a flaming pile of beige mediocrity.

What I would really love is a true surprise. To wake up one morning and bam! there's an awesome new album. No build-up, no teasing - just flippin' dazzle me on the spot.

I want to call in sick to work so I can go to the wrecka stow the second it opens and buy a vinyl album, then have to endure the mounting excitement on the way home because the album's on vinyl and I can't just crack it open and play it in the car. Then I get home and find a download code in the album, so I can listen to it anywhere I want.

I want new music and an experience. Prince hasn't delivered one of those in awhile.

I mean I am over all this kind of stuff, whatever comes, comes - good or bad - but it makes things interesting at least. The slight of hand games and marketing tricks that's just Prince. Most of them backfire any way because he's got no longterm game for any particular project. He's good with that initial push, but they're often timed wrong, go off the boil and generally are not followed through on any way - again that's Prince.

I definetely agree Nouveau. You hit the nail on the head though when you said his timing and lack of a long term committment is his downfall, He doesn't think things completely through, which in turn contributes to the timing issues you spoke of. This latest "campaign" is a perfect example. Initial momentum created...EXCELLENT!! But, overthinking things (C&D letter) have all but killed it at this point. Really, he needs an advisor to help guide him through this mess. He just can't seem to get out of his own way (most of the time). Making music? An UBER EXPERT!! Marketing that music? Uh...No!

That stuff was cool in the 80s/90s. But nowadays it seems rather immature, bordering on the stupid. I wish he'd realise that not all of his fans are teenage girls. Or at the very least, that he'd stop treating us like we are.

Who's with me?

We're talking about a guy who in 2010 still believes a "hidden track," is still some groundbreaking innovative idea. We're also talking about a guy who believes it is art to have a talented background singer shouting "Put Your Hands Up," and "Make Some Noise," over and over and over and over again.

I've had to just accept with the genius, you also get some dumb ass thrown in. The mysterious angle was played well in the early 80's, but nearly every stunt he pulls now is simply self-parody, and makes him look corny and produces too many cringe-worthy moments to count.

Despite all the issues I have with him, his studio work continues to entertain and amaze me. I accepted around the Rave period, that he would likely never have another radio hit, and just was happy with what I got, and just hoped for amazing live shows. I got two great tours in 2002 and 2004, and a sometimes amazing, and sometimes frustrating one in 2011.

Prince be normal? I would really like that, but I just can't expect it. He doesn't have it in him.

I like that prince is acknowledging the fan perception of him as being a jerk with lawyers by enacting the very action that upsets the fans so much. Except this time it is an interactive performance played out as part of a story. A live in the moment story where not only is prince entertaining us but he is also playing with us. Acknowledging his fans and telling us a story about it. This is the story of 3rd eye girl. I wonder if 3rd eye girl is the name of his new all girl 3 piece backing band. I'd check out that show. Especially if it were at some small grunge band theatre and he played his more dark alty music like bambi, pheromone, da bang, i wonder u, all the critics (dez style), when u were mine, dirty mind, sign o the times, had u, tamborine, calhoune square, whats my name .. shockadelica, the future

What fascinates me is that he still takes the time to control so many aspects of his musical empire. His brain must be divided into a 1000 parts working simultaneously. Prince and the word "delegate" do not seem to go together at all. I can barely handle work projects, take care of home and attend a couple of events during a week. My point being HE IS NOT NORMAL. He just flat out does not think like others. So what seems completely frustrating and screwed up to us is just Prince channeling out all that stuff that goes on in his brain. He just IS.... and as someone who still believes his music is needed out here I have learned to accept it.

Prince has never done things normally, and that's part of the allure. There's always this constant game of "tease" going on from him to his fanbase. But now in my early 30s I'm getting a bit tired of it.

Really Prince? You want us to play this game with you? You really want us to think that 3rdEyeGirl is a not an official outlet, but a bootlegger? You want us to think that that was a real cease & desist letter? How stupid do you think we are? Or perhaps you know that we know that, and are still playing it for some ego-pumping trip? Who knows. All I know is that I'm getting tired of playing this pre-album, pre-tour game of tease. Just announce what it is you're planning on doing, and do it!

Look at Bowie. He has a new album coming out. What does he do? He announces: "Hey I have a new album coming out and here's the first single", and everyone's happy! But no... I don't care about him "being normal". Being "weird" has always been one of the things I like about him. But "being weird" too often crosses over into shitting on his fans and making it too much work for them to, essentially, fork over their hard earned cash to keep him stocked in symbol jewelry and diamond studded canes. If he ran his websites worth a shit, ever, I doubt he'd catch as much blowback for this sort of thing, but then again, the internet is dead and all.

I'm getting too old to "do the work" such as it is. The songs will resurface somewhere, I'll grab them and move on my way. Prince is more interested in "being Prince" than he is in cultivating the good will of the people who make him what he is, making great music or, god forbid, ever saying "thank you" by throwing us a bone once in a while.

See also: Crystal Ball, Lotus Flower t-shirts, etc.

His stuff is great, and he's always interesting but mostly I just can't be bothered anymore. I have a wife and a son. I'm not rich. If he wants to be paid for those four 3rdEye tracks, throw em' up on I-Tunes and let me buy em. Otherwise, quit wasting my time.

Prince is going to be Prince so stop whining about how he does things and him not being normal. At the end of the day everyone on this site supports his decisions with dollars or downloads(be it legal or illegal) so that tells him he's still got some people who dig the games and mystery in his methods. If you really can't stomach life being manipulated by Prince and his games and riddles are driving you insane then stop following him. If Prince or any NPG member reads this site they know full well that their methods are effective and that we as a group will jump thru hoops to get the music and do even more to see it live.

That is the absolute best quote I have ever read about Prince in the last 10 years.

He is more interested in living the life of 'Prince', both the 'Prince' that the media has created and the 'Prince' he is in his own head.

Not all of us, bubba.

Also, it's worth pointing out that the "everyones" on this site grow fewer and fewer every year. I used to post here all the time. Met my wife though this website even. Any more, a nuclear bomb could go off in Paisley Park and maybe 50 people would notice. This place is deader than dead anymore and we're also lucky we haven't been sued. I can ignore this place for a week and come back and read new posts in 20 minutes. This place to used to be fucking electric.

It's not our fault that Prince continues to alienate his fanbase, year after year, rip them off, and spend more time worrying about where to get custom clothes made with his own face on them, scrubbing babies dancing to "Let's Go Crazy" and anything any of us ever wanted to see or listen to off of YouTube and trying to figure out how to print and deliver fucking t-shirts instead of running a real, valuable website and a bonafied commercial outlet for the music he does deliver that fewer and fewer people seem to be interested in.

He's too worried about 'being cool' and 'looking cool' and being so far ahead of the game and so far beyond all of us that aren't named "Prince" than he is about delivering good music to the people that want it the most and who would willingly pay for it.

Aw, shucks. Thanks. I've been saying it for a while now, actually, but it seems patently obvious to anyone that's (bothered to) follow him more or less since the "Musicolgy" comeback. It almost seems like 'if it makes sense' then Prince won't do it because, well, he's Prince and you're not. Which is OK, but it'd be nice if he stopped reminding us all the time.

We get it, Prince. You're awesome and we suck. You know everything and we're all dumb. You know God personally and all other faiths are shit. Only you understand music. Now please contact me when you run out of cool clothes and you need my credit card number.

It's all about creating excitement!! I believe Bowie did that by keeing quiet and just unloading music. Everyone thought they heard the last of him but from out of nowhere we get a new single and announcement of a new album out of the blue one day. That really has not been the way to do things. The majority of the time we at least know something new is on the way. So I have to say, no Bowie did not play by the rules but the message was clear and concise once delivered. Still, Bowie kept things on the downlow for 2 years!! In knowing something is on the way it ends up being so anticlimatic.

How would fans feel if woke up one AM and from out of the blue Prince released 2 albums in FLAC file for download. I think this place would be a buzz and he would get tons of press, hence driving up business but who knows what he will do. If he is a gambler that maybe the way but it sounds like he wants a payday in advance and I can't blame with downloaders.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?
