This could be Really Good. Or Really Bad. I hope they get some amazing performers that will do his catalog justice. Please Please no drake or any rappers. Patti can come and kick off her shoes again..lol
Who would you like to see in the line-up?
Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Celebrating Prince

http://www.pollstar.com/n...?ID=803688

03:01 PM Thursday 12/20/12

An all-star tribute honoring Prince is set for New York City’s Carnegie Hall March 7. Although a lineup has not yet been announced, people are already buying tickets for the show. Maybe that’s because the man in charge never fails to provide audiences with nights to remember.

The man we’re referring to is New York City promoter Michael Dorf, founder of the Knitting Factory and co-founder of the Digital Club Network, who opened City Winery in 2008. Dorf has been organizing these tributes for years and past honorees include The Who, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and R.E.M. The Prince tribute will mark Dorf’s ninth annual concert in the series.

Artists who have played Dorf’s tribute concerts include Jackson Browne, Rickie Lee Jones, The Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson, Steve Earle, Taj Mahal and Marianne Faithful.

Of course, honoring an artist and doing the show at Carnegie Hall doesn’t necessarily mean the honoree will be present. Dorf talked with Pollstar earlier this year, telling us which artists came to play and which came to watch.

“Bruce Springsteen came and played the encore,” Dorf said. “What was amazing to me was that in two songs he had worked up a full sweat. He stood out because he caught a private plane after the show to catch up with his family in Florida. He made a major effort to be there. He was amazing.

“R.E.M. came and played the encore. Bernie Taupin came to the Elton John tribute and enjoyed the show. Simon & Garfunkel came and enjoyed their show.”

All the proceeds from Dorf’s tribute shows always benefit various charities. For the upcoming Prince tribute the recipients include The American Symphony Orchestra’s Music Notes, Church Street School Of Music, Young Audiences New York, FIKS (Fixing Instruments For Kids In Schools), Little Kids Rock and the Center For Arts Education.

Tickets, including VIP packages are on sale now. Click here for more information.

I doubt Prince will show up to the Carnegie Hall tribute concert. The only reason Prince showed up to the BET Awards in 2010 was because he hand picked the performers and chose which songs they would sing. If Prince could have stopped this tribute from happening he would have.

Well, the article states it doesn't mean he will or has to make an appearance for the tribute, it simply states it will be a tribute performance honoring Prince's music at Carnegie Hall.

In any other circumstance eye would say Prince wouldn't show up. But with his upcoming blockbuster "MasterPiece" new album set to come out next year 2013(which will also coincide with his Masters). This will be the ultimate promotion 4 Princey. He will be there...

Blehhh such a tired list. Alicia, Andre, Lenny Janelle, Chaka and Patti never add anything to Prince's work. Just masturbation. I REALLY hope they add performers who will add color and contribute to Prince's work rather than the same patronizing boring folks who add nothing. Jack White would be thrilling to see, U2...actual creative folks who can add something new, not just cover performers.

I totally agree wholeheartedly. There are artists and musicians in rock music that would give superior performances than most of the names on that list excluding D'Angelo. I don't want to hear someone who cannot sing rock music singing "Purple Rain". Foo Fighters for example could do "Endorphinmachine" or a high octane rocker like that.

Being that the concert is at Carnegie Hall, I'm assuming the band won't dress up like Prince circa any point in his career.

Agree with all of this. Unfortunately, if Prince shows up or is involved in any way, we will no doubt see nothing but female performers. It will be BET 2010 redux (which was horrible - except for Janelle Monae)

Not a bad lineup. I could see Stevie Wonder singing some of Prince's more political/Planet Earth type tracks. Sheila E playing his latin-flavored tracks. Chaka Khan singing his more upbeat r&b soul tracks along with Patti LaBelle. The Time doing Prince's Minneapolis sound. Lenny can definitely do Prince's popular rock and blues-rock tracks, no question, and maybe add Joni Mitchell to the list to do his pop ballads. Maceo doing P's jazz and funk tracks. I think musicians/artists he's had a close or long-term, music history with or whose music he was influenced by, should be doing some of the tributes. I honestly don't know why some of his fans though, tend to belittle P's r&b/soul flavor, when he has so many, beautiful, soul and blues ballads.

I don't think Prince will perform at the tribute just like he didn't perform at the BET Awards when he received the lifetime achievement award. I was shocked when he showed up at the BET Awards 2 years ago. The Carnegie Hall concert is much more prestigious. I just hope the promoters book some rock acts. Someone has to wail on the ax if Prince isn't. And I might be in the minority but I don't wanna see Questlove during this tribute. I think he's overrated as a drummer and can be on the sidelines for this one.

I can't help but think of the tribute concert Michael Jackson threw HIMSELF:-( . Hopefully, this will be better produced.

Lenny is a good choice as a rock act, to sing and perform some of Prince's rock tracks. At the end of the day, fans sure won't be the ones choosing the acts though.

I know it would be far far easier to get Lenny, Questlove, Janelle and other less-in-demand acts, and I know it would be next to imposible to book top artist to perform a tribute concert, but these are among my top dream choices.

Jack White

Bruce Springsteen

U2

The Red Hot Chili Peppers

Madonna

Janet Jackson

Cee Lo Green

Stevie Wonder

Radiohead

Adele

The Foo Fighters

Adam Levine..good choice. Didn't he do one of Prince's songs on that 'Voice' show?

I think it would be cool to have musicians/artists that can capture all the flavors of music Prince performs. They definitely have to know how to bring the Funk, CocoRock, Soul ballads, R&B upbeat songs, Poprock, Pop ballads, Jazz, Rockabilly, Bluesrock, etc. of Prince. Nothing watered-down. For all we know that show may be an orchestra playing his music with no entertainers.

Icons - either a presentation or perform a song of his:

Stevie Wonder

Patti LaBelle,

Chaka Khan

Larry Graham

Carlos Santana

Lenny Kravitz

Adam Levine

Joni Mitchell

Maybe 1 or 2 songs from:

Sheila E

Members of the Revolution, Andre Cymone, Dez Dickerson - all do a performance together

Maya Rudolph and her Princess group

Newer/Artists that could be introduced as Prince being inspired by their music/and that he's worked/performed with recently:

Janelle Mona

Lianne La Havas

Anna Moura

Esperanza Spalding

Andy Allo

Then Prince with his current NPG band (including the 3 backup singers) do the finale.

I got a ticket, given the doubtfulness of any type of Prince US tour, it hopefully will fill a void for a while.

Interestingly, there is a VIP package that includes tickets to an "aftershow". If Prince does show up, that might be an interesting venture, but I am not willing to spend $300 to take a chance.

Yes it can go really well or not... the best tribute show I've seen was the 1999 one that Questlove & Vernon Reid curated for the Brooklyn Academy of Music back in December 1999. That was a great show... The covers were imaginative, refreshing, and inventive, and featured under the radar type of performers who were really good, like Joan Osborne (who rocked Little Red Corvette) and Bilal who took control of International Lover.

I suspect for this Carnegie Show they will go in a more artsy like direction... probably get some jazz, classic funk, rock sounds. No protege types. And I doubt Prince will show up or perform.

Stevie Wonder

The Time

Sheila E

Chaka Khan

Lenny Kravitz

Stevie Nicks

I honestly don't know why some of his fans though, tend to belittle P's r&b/soul flavor, when he has so many, beautiful, soul and blues ballads.

confused  I don't know 'bout that.  Chaka seem to be slippin in her old age.  Last time I heard her sing live, she was awful.

Well seeing how she's been friends with him for so long, and he wrote songs for her, yes I could see her being one of the performers/presenters at this tribute.

Don't see why he should have a problem with a tribute show, considering how many covers he himself does in his own concerts, as a way of paying tribute to his own influences.

I was surprised he showed up to the BET Awards tribute in 2010. It looked like he felt uncomfortable and it says something when he showed up 3/4 of the show and left after the presentation was over. I dont think Prince is the kind of guy that relishes these kind of things. Like when MJ had the MSQ tribute to himself. If it's short and quick I think he'll go it, but long stuff like this is understandly embarrassing. Even when it's deserved.

This is a tribute show Prince does not need to be there. If this tribute is anything like the tribute show like was done for Curtis Mayfield at Avery Fisher Hall back in June, then it will be great.I went to that tribute which his old group. THE impressions was there also,Mavis Staples,Bilal,Sinead O Connor; The Roots,Meshell Ndegeocello and more excellent show. Like i said Prince dies not need there this is a tribute to him,but the artist i would pick to oerform would be:
The Revolution
Sheila E.
Bilal
Meshell Ndegeocello
The Roots
Alicia Keys
Andre 3000
Mint Condition
Frank Ocean
Pharrell
Trey Songz
Cyndi Lauper
Robin Thicke
Andre Cymone
Q Tip
Sinead O Connor
Chaka Khan
India Arie
Musiq
Jill Scott

The same Trey Songz that butchered the hell out of Purple Rain when he interpolated it into his performance on the BET Awards, causing many people to wonder "Is THIS the tribute? OMG"

The event organizer Michael Dorf is no slouch when it comes to presenting top notch talent--he used to own the Knitting Factory. Based on the past tributes, my guess is he will shy away from trendy, pop acts. It is just as unlikely that any former associates will be there--hasn't Sheila E. tweeted enough that she and Prince are through? The artists who performed at previous tributes are working artists in their own right, so I think "the Revolution" is unlikely.

this can either be great or lame.

I really don't care for artists that claim to have been influenced by Prince. If Alicia Keys or Janelle Monae show up, it would be cool but boring.

If I had my way, I'd want to see serious mash-ups instead these r+b artists that will surely drag the proceedings down.

I wanna see the Foo Fighters on this.

Why would r&b artists performing at this tribute drag proceeds down? Some of the best artists have been influenced by R&B music, even Prince, and he still embraces r&b. A mixture of various genres of music that reflect all the types of music, Prince has embraced in his singing/performance style, over the years would be just fine, r&b included, by various artists.

I doubt it would be mainly r&b genre artists performing in this tribute.

I cannot imagine the foo fighters singing Prince's soul ballads though, like 'Adore' or 'Insatiable'. I could see maybe D`Angelo or Robin Thicke singing those types of tracks. I could also see Cindy Lauper singing some of Prince`s bluesy, spiritual tracks like 'Willing & Able', just as much as I could see India Arie singing some of Prince's lighter ballads, and Mint Condition, Lenny Kravitz, Maroon 5 or Muse playing some of his rock songs. Oh and just to add, I could see Meshell Ndegeocello rocking Prince's songs too, especially 'Dreamer'.

Ok yes I was generalizing here. But i regard Prince as this great "synthesizer" of popular music. there are so many styles wrapped up in his music, and judging by past tributes to him, the performers have always been one sided and that has usually been r + b artists. I have absolutely nothing against those artists or that genre but I'd like to see surprises. I know the Foos would never even be asked to be on a show like that (I'm sure they would accept in a heart beat) and I only used them as an example to try and mix things up.

If I see The Time (who I love) and Sheila E. (who I love as well) on that stage, it kind of defeats the purpose to me.

If you're referring to the last tribute by BET, actually Janelle Monae and Esperanza Spalding who performed some of Prince's songs, aren't r&b artiists. Janelle's music is more alternative/futuristic rock/pop/some funk, and Esperanza Spalding is a Jazz artist. Not sure how you define or categorize r&b artists. I think part of Prince's mission regarding his music output and creativity over the years, was to break that barrier and stigma regarding how the music industry categorized a musician's/artist's creative skills, based on race or the type of music the industry assumed/expected of some musicians/artists, based on their race. Prince pretty much helped to change those expectations in the industry, and helped to open doors for other artists to take risks, and not limit their creative, music skills into one category.

Not too many musicians/artists has quite the catalog he has, in the form of the various genres of music he's touched. So I imagine that this tribute will have various artists performing many of Priince's music styles. Guess we'll have to wait and see which musicians/artists will be listed to perform.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

Nice choices. I agree with some on your list with the exception of a few. I can see some of these artists as part of the tribute as well. Here's another list just for fun, although my choices are subject to change:

Solo Acts

Gwen Stefani - Definitely a good choice

Bruno Mars - Good choice

Christine Aguilera

Ceelo Green - Good choice

Madonna

D'Angelo - Good choice, without question

Cindy Lauper

Eric Clapton

Joni Mitchell

Beyonce - Now you all know Beyonce is going to want to be inclusive in this..lol

Esperanza Spalding

Chaka Khan

Combined performances/Bands

Mint Condition

Black Eyed Peas - Good choice, even though they're not a favorite, but a good pick

No Doubt (with Gwen Stefani)

Foo Fighters - Ok, I'll go with that, even though don't know much about them

Bono/U2

Maroon 5

Outkast w/Andre 3000 featuring Janelle Monae (Janelle used to perform with Outkast)

The Roots

Maya Rudolph and Princess band

Main presenters

Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle and Sheila E., Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (w/add other names later)

Not so likely to want to see perform or inclusive at this tribute

No Katy Perry - She'll turn it into a bubble-gum popsy mess

No Lady Gaga - No need for a Madonna ripoff, plus she may pull that 'throwing up' mess. I prefer the real 'Madonna' to perform instead, as she is from Prince's era

No Usher - Please no, like another orger stated (lol)

NoJustin Bieber - (Lawd help us all if he's part of this tribute

According to an article in the New York Times:

An annual concert at Carnegie Hall to raise money for music education will feature Talib Kweli, the Roots and the Blind Boys of Alabama this year as they pay tribute to the songs of Prince.

...other acts on the bill include Booker T., Living Colour, DeVotchKa and Madeleine Peyroux. The Roots, led by the drummer Questlove, will anchor the show, backing up many of the guest vocalists.

[Edited 1/3/13 10:16am]

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

This does have the machinations of a great concert event. However, as much as I woulds love to see Prince attend at the Carnegie Hall tribute, I doubt he will show up, considering he's not going to be in control of the bookings, and Prince's disdain for swearing and his more sexually explicit songs will be performed.

On the other hand, maybe the concert will be all the better having a musical director interpretting their versions of his songs. I love the Roots, but damn, does Questlove gotta be in every thing related to a Prince tribute?

I also see that the carnegieprince.com website now listed those artists on their site. Will be interesting to see who else will be performing. I'm glad 'Living Colour' is part of the program because I'm sure they will be able to deliver some of Prince's rock tracks.

Of course, most of the articles are reporting the same thing, but I had a little giggle at Spin Magazine's article heading though, and the end of their article....

Prince Will Let Other People Perform His Music at Carnegie Hall Concert for Charity

January 4 2013, 11:21 AM ET
by Kyle McGovern

The Roots to lead music education fundraiser on March 7

The Roots, Talib Kweli, Living Colour, and more will pay tribute to Prince for an annual benefit concert at Carnegie Hall on March 7, the New York Times reports.

For the ninth edition of the yearly series, which has previously raised more than $700,000 to support music education for underpriveleged children, selections from Prince's song catalog will be covered and reinterpreted by more than 20 artists, including also Madeleine Peyroux, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Booker T., DeVotchka, and Mike Scott of the Waterboys.....

(Edited for compliance)

........No word yet on whether Prince will help his disciples funk through a few tunes, like in 2009 when then-honorees R.E.M. teamed up with Patti Smith, but the former Revolution leader is already more supportive of this tribute than the nixed Le Petit Prince project. Just remember, audience members: Prince takes the whole "no cell phone" thing really seriously.

Yes it's a great line-up! Musicians who aren't afraid to give their interpretations of the songs so it's not like karaoke/covers. And with Questlove directing, it promises to be as great as the 1999 Tribute he & Living Colour's Vernon Reid did at the Brooklyn Academy of Music back in December '99.

I don't have anything against people like Alicia Keys, Jannell Monae, or even Patti Label.... But what I am saying is clearly a ton of male singers and musicians love him and are influenced by him. Yet they are never asked to perform his songs. Thankfully Prince has nothing to do with this set list or lineup of performers.

?uestlove will get it right

Wow thanks for the update!  D'Angelo and MeShell woot! The lineup is looking a lot better.  I've never seen D'Angelo in concert or MeShell, so this will be a great opportunity to see them perform.  I can envision D'Angelo singing one of Prince's slow tracks, and MeShell playing one of Prince's rock jams.  I plan on enjoying this show. woot!

Or D'Angelo has his own problems w/randomness (as he's trying to put finishing finishing finishing touches on his first album in 13 years?).

Meshell's been doing her own cover show for a while (which I caught last year--it was good)... so don't imagine her not being willing to do the tribute.

If Prince had a problem with other people covering his songs, then the thought of attending the Carnegie Hall tribute must keep him up at night. Come March 7, Prince will either play a show on that night.

Elvis Costello? Wow, that's a name I've never associated with Prince at all!

Apparently Elvis did a cover of Purple Rain at his concert in Melbourne(Australia) on Friday night

The Elvis wheel features songs spanning his entire career and a few wildcards. He doesn’t know what he will be playing next until the wheel decides.

Last night’s show fell heavily around the 1986 album ‘Blood and Chocolate’. Five songs were played from that record.

Here is the setlist for Elvis Costello and the Imposters at the Palais Melbourne January 25, 2013.

Overture with therpischorean styles of Ms. Kelly Kay Kelly

Oliver’s Army (from Armed Forces, 1979)

The River In Reverse/I’ll Take Care Of You/This Wheel’s On Fire (from The River In Reverse, 2006, Almost Blue, 1981, Dylan cover)
I Want You (from Blood and Chocolate, 1986)
Alison (from My Aim Is True, 1977)
Shabby Doll (from Imperial Bedroom, 1982)
Honey, Are You Straight Or Are You Blind? (from Blood and Chocolate, 1986)
Deep Dark Truthful Mirror (from Spike, 1989)
So Like Candy/Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (from Mighty Like A Rose, 1991/King Of America, 1986)

Purple Rain (Prince cover)

(I Don’t Want To Go To) Chelsea (from This Year’s Model, 1978)
I Can’t Stand Up For Falling Down (from Get Happy, 1981)

I wished to see genre blending artists, for Prince is a multiple genre artist (pop rnb soul rock gospel mpl sound dance etc), so I wish to see:

Joni Mitchell

Kate Bush (The moody songs. And God Created Woman? If I Was Your Girlfriend? Solo? WOW!)

David Bowie

Esperanza Spalding

Beck

Brazilian Caetano Veloso is a great songwriter that mixes a lot of Brazilian and foreign genres in his work since the late 60s, and could make brilliant versions of Prince's songs

Also would like to see:

Lauryn Hill

D'Angelo

Cee Lo Green

Outkast (ideal for the more playful funk songs, examples: La la la hee hee hee or Erotic City)

Carlos Santana

Madonna (like it or not, she owns some of the greatest songs in pop music history, just like Prince)

Lady Gaga (yes, I think she's talented)

Christina Aguilera (she sung bits on 1999 and Kiss in a medley on the Voice program and it was amazing, I think she's a wonderful singer who UNDERSTANDS rnb and soul)

Fiona Apple (a powerful interpretation to a more introspective song like Eye Love U But Eye Dont Trust U Anymore maybe?)

Bjork

Elton John

Paul McCartney (why not? - Take Me With U, She Loves Me 4 Me, Around the world in a day, Play in the Sunshine would all work)
Rolling Stones (why not? - Sign o the Times, Girls & Boys, Anotherloverholeinyohead, Controversy, Dirty Mind, many songs would turn out awesome versions!)

Robert Plant & Jimmy Page (again, why not? - maybe Bambi, Uptown, Delerious, America, Tambourine, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, even a hard funk like Gett Off would be awesome!)

And Prince's fellow rnb geniuses:

Smokey Robison

Aretha Franklin

Stevie Wonder

Chaka Khan

Patti Labelle (these last two, certainly two of the GREATEST SINGERS of all time, absolutely no problem would I see in them singing Prince again)

Off the modern rock bands... Not sure. Are there any rock bands who are brilliant enough (yes, maybe Killers, Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Jack White, Black Keys), but to do Prince? (don't know....) For me, rock n roll glory days are long gone.

Those came to mind right now.

BTW, going ill and feeling ill and then ill again every time I read U2 in this thread. Think I even saw Green Day somewhere.

No problem Jgreco7. Saw it on Drfunkenberry's page, and thought I'd post it here.

I notice though that the carnegieprince.com website did not update any info as far as adding more artists, since D'Angelo, Meshell ndegeocello's names were taken off, the list, and I could sworn Living Colour's band name was listed there as well, prior to D'Angelo and Meshell's. That site is very slow on updating info.

Esperanza Spalding ' s performance was great I thought ... But agree with you peeps otherwise ... and I would love to see Natasha Khan get a stab at a prince song ...

Okay, I found the actual article where DrF mentions that on his blog, dated 1/27/13;see the highlighted excerpt below from DrF's blog:

http://www.drfunkenberry....next-week/

" If January is any indication of what 2013 has in store for PRINCE (Pr1NC3) fans, then it is going to be BIG! Along with the new web site and the Billboard cover, PRINCE will be receiving the Icon Award at this Year's Billboard Awards May 19th and will be attending a tribute in his honor at Carnegie Hall in March which is being put together by Questlove of The Roots......"

Also, just to confirm that DrF mentioned Prince attending the Carnegie Hall tribute last week on his blog, here is DrF's reconfirmation of that info that he tweeted today, reconfirming that information. See his tweet below:

2/1/13

drfunkenberry@drfunkenberry

"In response to last tweet, PRINCE confirmed to that will be attending Carnegie Hall Tribute. He supports it. We re-confirmed."

Curious about the setlist.

Just hope Elvis Costello doesn't sing again Purple Rain, nor D'Angelo sings She's Always in My Hair. That would be disappointing.
Most interesting add for me was Booket T. Has he ever played a Prince song before? He is no doubt a talented artist, and I bet he's the one to steal the show.
