Just report him to the mods. If he isn't interested in debate, then he's free to leave and harrass people at another board.

That doesn't work either. One of them just told me he's one of the most "positive minded people on the org." And that there is "no moderation necessary." lol

Complete sycophant. Adds nothing of worth to any conversation. But I make allowances as he's just a nipper and we were all a bit daft and stupid at that age. He'll grow out of it. We hope wink

Actually, that was a good response. KCOOLMUSIQ is a much needed remedy for the rampant negativity that is so dominant here, which abounds and procreates.

His/her persistent positivity is appreciated by more than a few.

Taking time out of your day to make eye roll emoticons at every post you don't agree with is hardly positive, G.

Okay, so the eye rolls do indeed get used a bit much for my taste as well, but he/she doesn't need to be insulted for it.

Now... let's all hold hands and sing "Kumbaya".

Loved the rehearsal snippet; was not so sure about the studio version.

I'm afraid that there is a danger of the studio version being a bit too "watered down" for that sort of track. The riff is simple, the melody is simple, so what's left if the song is produced in a modern pop song way (lower the guitars in the mix, make the beat sound tight and make the vocals as clear sounding as possible)? Not much, I'm afraid.

If he recorded it with that rehearsal band in one take, live in the studio, with the guitars, bass and drums loud in the mix and his vocals buried somewhere in there, there would be so much sonic space for each instrument, it would be pumpin', sort of like the early Van Halen stuff, which just powered on, somehow.

I can understand that the times have changed and that it would be suicide to record something the way The Undertaker was done (although we love it, of course), but all I'm saying is that a song like this, with the strength lying in the power and delivery, needs a powerful, dirty version on-record. Not a watered down, radio-friendly RnR Affair style version, but a sheer, straight-forward rock version. The thing is, that would probably be even more "accessible" to most listeners, because, let's be honest, stone cold rock and roll with loud guitars is something people will always "get", whereas I'm not so sure about the mellow rock sound I gathered from the short studio version.

Hey Dave. I understand what you're saying, but I prefer the drums in the studio clip over the drums in the rehearsal. The snare is mixed louder and is more present, more powerful in the studio clip.

Another thing is that Prince has ALWAYS been all about "beating" the recorded versions of songs when played live. Amazingly, he uses two sides of himself to compete with each other, thereby having acheived true greatness as both a recording artist and as a live performer.

Also, I'd just like to point out that live versions don't always "win"... Two excellent recent examples:

"Dreamer"

"Wall of Berlin"

These absolutely ROCKED on the 'Lotusflower' album.

~G

Funnily, what I personally associate with that pumpin' live rock sound is a snare drum that's a tiny tad bit deeper in the mix, with a lot of punch in the bass and some natural room reverb. In the studio (and live, too) Prince 95% of the time leaves the drums almost completely dry, which has a profound effect on the feel they generate, in my opinion.

This, I think, is the perfect way to produce a pumpin' rock song (all recorded live in the studio, in one take):

nod

And it somehow casts a shadow on the sensible examples of the taming of deconstructive criticism, too. There are times why people need to be reminded that Prince doesn't really "owe" us anything (apart from the odd dollar and t-shirt) and that he still only human. But all those sensible, cool and calm efforts are made to look ridiculous by posters such as KCOOL and their aggressive, almost infantile "protective instinct".

I've also noticed that he prefers the drums quite dry. That having been said, I have absolutely no problem with the drums on the 'Lotusflower' album... especially Cora Dunham's drumming (and recording) on "Dreamer".

"Unchained" is one of my fav VH songs, byt the way!

Sure, but those bloody eyerolls are adding nothing real to the discission, except irritation for lots of members here. I'm sure Ckoolmuzik is well aware of that, but he/she is enjoying his/her annoying habit too much to stop it. I think moderation (both by the poster AND by the moderators) is needed here.

Nothing personal though, at times I agree with him/her, but those eyerolls... rolleyes

It's difficult to make a judgement on this since it's such a short sample but what I hear makes me very optimistic for 2013. I agree with what some other people have said, in that its vey reminiscent of the Chaos And Disorder sound. It sounds quite similar to I Like It There and if you remember that rehearsal jam that Hannah Ford shared, this Screwdriver song seems to have been recorded during the same session.
