Albums The Rainbow Children is better than....

I just loooove the Rainbow Children and think it stacks up with the classics...
So which albums is it greater than?

Ok I will start, IMHO:

For You
Prince
Dirty Mind
1999
Graffiti Bridge
The Gold Experience
Emancipation
New Power soul
Musicology
3121
Planet Earth
Lotusflower (only just!)
20ten

I think TRC is on a par with ATWIAD and Lovesexy (both similar records).. Its a fabulous album that deserves more praise and I wish he would put out more in this style, pushing the boundaries instead of going with the trends, although Lotus and bits of 20ten have some of the bravery of this CLASSIC album.. Fingers crossed for another one if these...

Ps I am a massive fan of Richard Dawkins and completely non-religious and this record does not offend me...

Being honest according to my list

I give TRC a 59 out of 100, this is equal with For you

Only better than

ONA (55)

ONA it ain't over (54)

N.E.W.S (53)

The Truth (47)

Chaos and Disorder (46)

New Power Soul (42)

Indigo nights disc in 21 Nights (34)

Kamasutra (12)

Although its better too than the third disc of Emancipation with all the keyboard jams and rapping that drag it down to 56/100.

As you can see its not near my favourites and its about 30th out of 41 Prince albums I have ranked.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Come on. Idk i can't let u say that for you is bettter than Rainbow Children when u look at how much Prince had to go through in his career to reach rainbow children. The album in my opion if ranked out of a 100 on a prince scale is like 70 on a regular music scale its like a 78. 1+1+1=3, Muse to the Pharoah, everlasting now, Mellow, Family name, and the work are all kickin. And the Performances of those songs live on the ona box set are great and really good on the aladin concert video.

I could give a shit what he's had to come through. He'd gone through more when he made New Power Soul than Purple Rain, so what the fuck does that have to do with anything? Nada.

The more I think about it, the more I think TRC might be my least favourite album by him. It's so reactionary, so dogmatic, sexist and archaic, I can't sit through it from start to finish. I can sit through an album like NPS or Rave even though they're both awful because at least they don't disgust my intellect. They're just bad albums and nothing more. TRC is just disgusting.

When i say gone through im not talking about personal life. I mean think about it. When he wrote For you he knew nothing about producing an album and really wasn't fully developed as a musician. But by Rainbow Children he was the genius we knew. So ur basically saying to me that by liking For you more than TRC that prince could have written TRC with his musical ability prior to for you and i just can't see that. The horn arrangments, the genius turnarounds, the solos, the darth vader voices, the great lyrics. For you doesn't even compare.

Hmm. I guess i can't see the album the way u listen to it because i started listening to Rainbow Children when i was around 9-10 so i listened to the album for the music not for the lyrics. Musically the Album is WAY BETTER than rave or NPS and Musically the album is just great to me but not as great as gold, sign, pr , ect... I don't have a problem with religious prince when it sounds good . Which is why i don't care that much for Planet Earth.

Sorry don't agree, my opinion of it is that its mediocre and that is all there is to it. Freddom of speech, my rights are enshrined to think what I want. Wether you like my opinion or not is immaterial, but you are entitled to your critique, which will have no effect on me.

I just think those songs are nothing compared to his classics from the 1980s. they are crappy filler at best and you quote 2 of the worst, family name and muse, homphobic and anti semitic hate drivel.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Rainbow Children is better than Kamasutra. I think that's it. Maybe it beats The Truth, too.

Let's see... Grafitti Bridge has Thieves in the Temple on it... NewPowerSoul has that hidden track Wasted Kisses, Batman has Partyman... The title track of Rave would have been a kickass jam had it been released in the late 80s... Come to think of it, ALL of Prince's albums are better than Rainbow Children because none of them have him preaching hell & damnarion over boring pseudo-jazz with hardly any good songwriting at all!

You all need to go back and listen to TRC more carefully. I'm not talking about the lyrics, I'm talking about the music!

Sure, the lyrics are whack, but the music is amazing. Sophisticated with great depth. Listen to the guitar work. It's awesome. If you can get past all the silly lyrics that only make sense to Prince, you will find some truly amazing music on this cd.

Graffiti Bridge Prince's vision was too cloudy, didn't really understand what he was talking about, I feel the same with Rainbow Children, even though it's one of my favorites, I just go along with it(lyrically) because I don't understand it...

...unlike Dirty Mind-he painted a vision, a place, an attitude, that album cover was the doorway to a Dirty Mind, which all of this is why I personally don't see Rainbow Children as better than Dirty Mind. 1999 as well took you someplace, and you could relate, even if never experiencing the life.

It's hard 4 me to just judge 4U & Prince with an album like Rainbow Children though because he was just getting it started. Songs like She Loves Me 4 Me have that classic very early Prince touch, it could fit on one of those 3 early albums

I agree, I really don't understand the lyrics except on simple songs like She Loves Me 4 Me

I wouldn't say the lyrics are whack, just coded and to technical to decipher. How they are sung is good. But it really is the music that I love.

Also just for sake of riding along with Prince, the fantasy storyline...Prince's touch is cool, I just don't understand it, which takes the seriousness off it and let's me have fun listening

i respect the fact you have your opinion of this album and will protect your right to say it to my end, but bro, you are wrong so many accounts saying that album is better than sone of his classics have I listed below

Dirty Mind, 1999, ATWIAD, Lovesexy, TGE, 3121, Planet Earth, Lotus, those albums are classics, they all have great songs and themes, blistering guitar work, great keys and great singing.

The TRC album has some great jazz licks and measures and a couple of decent ballads and some great ones, but saying that album is better than those..... Oh hell naw mad

I think you're talking about the instrumental performances, not the music.

Music includes vocals & lyrics as well as the non-vocal instrumental performances. Check any definition that you like. From wikip, "the aesthetics of music include lyricism, harmony, hypnotism, emotiveness, temporal dynamics, resonance, playfulness, and color."

You're deluding yourself if you think TRC has whack lyrics but the music is amazing.

It is a pretty solid album that has grown respectfully over the years....still sounds fresh and inspired. I do skip over Mellow, and Muse 2 The Pharoah....however.

I like it more than

Prince

Come

News

Xpectation

Musicology

Rave

New Power Soul

20Ten

id say

Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I love how this album so completely divides the Prince camp in two, and the fact that he went his own way with it.

The use of the voice is ill advised and a lot of the music is really no more than filler (Mellow, Muse 2 The Pharao), but the worst part is and always will be the sexism, anti semitism and plain ignorism of the main plot. Lines like "perhaps she'll let him decide" makes me wanna cover my face. Get another television set, Prince. Love is really not about getting to "decide".

But I do dig Last December. Also The Everlasting Now, cause it makes me wanna jump up and down.

And the organic sound it has to it. And the passion.

Which makes it better than

For You, Graffiti Bridge, New Power soul, Planet Earth, ATWIAD, 20ten, Controversy, The Black Album, Crystal Ball (on which The Truth was the best thing, imo), N.E.W.S. and The Vault.

i love the music, but the words made me sad. the sadder thing is he really banished us. seems to me he released this last album, the rainbow children, and after that he basically stopped having parties at the park
