Acclaimed P songs you can't seem to care for

We are all Prince lovers, right. I, as many, I believe, like MOST of his work. There's the controversial albums, in which are songs one likes the other doesn't, or songs few seem to care for (like the ones with Tony M rapping all through).

But are there acclaimed (critically or by us fans) songs that you don't seem ever to care for, even if you try?

It takes some nerve to admit it, doesn't it?

Of course opinions change a little or much with time.

I confesss Little Red Corvette and Sign o the Times were two songs that grew a lot on me with time, and now I consider two of his best, although I thought they were simply good at first.

Shame on me, but here are some songs I can't seem to care for:

Let's go crazy

It's not that I don't like it. But it's simply a good song for me. Not a classic. Yes it's rock and roll, it's anthemic, it's exciting, opening show number. I get excited, but I don't think it's that great song it's reputed for.

Sometimes it snows in April

I understand its a slow epic, beautiful mood, beautiful storytelling, hauting melody, but I can't seem to like it. It's too slow and a little tacky for me! I'm not moved by it the way it moves most fans, even though I tried may times.

Hot thing

It's funky, I like the rhythm of it... but the way he sings, I find it so lifeless, too slow, and the lyrics are almost dumb (Barely 21/looking for big fun, Baby you dance so good/Baby I knew you would). I get annoyed by it.

Batdance

It's a collage of many songs (in fact it is), but the result is very unfortunate for me. Can't understand why it was a big hit. It's too MESSY! It seems a remix to promote the album, a medley, not actually a song.

The arms of Orion

A pretty ballad. But it touches the cliche of a hollywood love theme. Almost like it could have been written by David Foster, Diane Warren or someone like that. Or that it could've been the love theme of Batman as sung by Celine Dion. It sounds like "I just cant stop loving you" by MJ. It's kind of tacky for me!

Diamonds and Pearls

It's also pretty ballad. But I keep waiting for it to take off. It seems to be missing something! A pretty ballad, but I won't ever be able to put it in a greatest P ballads playlist.

Incense and candles

Not as acclaimed as the other ones. But 3121 was a well received album. I like the album, but this song sounds too much like rnb radio 2006, in a bad way. It sounds like a pastiche, doesn't have the boldness we recognize in a Prince song. It seems like a generic rnb latin inflected song with a sticky chorus made for radio at the time, and that could be recorded by any generic rnb singer.

I agree with you as far as Diamonds and Pearls and Sometimes it Snows in April are concerned.

For me, Do Me Baby and International Lover would fall into that category as well. They're both a bit overblown for my taste. I'm also not a fan of most of the Black Album, which I'm sure puts me in the minority.

er

Purple Rain!!!! I always was and still am a Prince fan in spite of it, not because of it. Doesn't have much in the way of a melody, lyrics aren't the best he ever wrote, guitar solo is hardly the best he ever did, singing oohoohoohoo for ten minutes at a show gets boring, but still... It's his biggest hit and we can't get around it.
I never cared much for Sometimes it Snows in April either until he played a beautiful version in Arnhem. Ah, that was two years ago already! How time flies...

I understand it's exaggerated. VERY exaggerated. But I feel an ironic side to Do Me Baby and International Lover. I can dig them.

I like all in this list. Specially Something in the water (sheer genius) and Delerious (fun rockabilly, maybe his best rockabilly).
But respect your points.

Yes, the oohoooooo may be boring on record for some, and for many live. I guess it's got the Hey Jude na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na issue.

I actually love this song. In the early months of me becoming a Prince fan I kept listening to this song a lot. I haven't listened to it for a while, but I still like it. Also, I don't you'll find that The Arms Of Orion isn't really acclaimed. From my experience, most people say it's too cheesy.

Ok, I have to tell you, I heart every classic song from Soft & Wet 1978 to Gold in 1995,

And just to mention a song on your list: Batdance is fantastic, I love the rythms, the guitar solo, the actor's dialogue.. great track.

(I don't like Ronnie Talk 2 Russia, but that is not an acclaimed song anyway)

My problems Prince's music began in 1996 with the Emancipation album.

Housequake, this is one of the hottest funk track Prince has ever made.

The Dirty Mind album is classic a 10/ 10, imo.

Let's Go Crazy, this is the finest 12 inch icluding Prince's "colour blind music", the combination of black funk and white rock, I will love LGC, always...

I am never getting tired of those classics. wink

What is there to understand? The lyrics are nothing, he's just yakking about a dance, they don't speak to me. Honestly, if he churned out lyrics like these today you'd all slaughter him. The music doesn't move me, nothing more to say. In fact, you can put it right there with the other songs where he wants you to do a dance, yep I'm sticking it there with Jughead and Horny Pony.
