"Best vocal performance by prince"

Just realised this old post, that can no longer be postet on. "Best vocal performance by prince"

"Crucial" and "Adore" are good bets, but the acoustic demo version of "Thieves in the Temple" peakes everything...

I guess it's all subjective to ones tastes... But I like the Thieves In The Temple demo too, and I think that his falsetto on Future Baby Mama (I like the song, sue me!) was greaaat. Actually, his falsetto on his first 2 albums was just so clear and well executted so pretty much any song from those two albums work too. Especially Baby... And Eye Hate U (which reminds me of Baby in wayyyy to many ways.) I like his vocals on She Loves Me 4 Me too, except on the part when he goes "when she calls my name" or something. His voice just sounds hoarse there o_O

Yes, I agree with this, too. "I Hate U" has it all - Prince's speaking voice, his normal singing voice, and the falsetto! It is a masterpiece as far as his vocals go ... for me anyway. wink It always gives me goosebumps, especially when listening to it on my headphones. Just brilliant!!

Baby Baby Baby.....What's it gonna Be...

C'mon now! Please play me a song by any other artist in the world with the sweet falsetto.....and the decibals in his screams of passion in tune....only other artists that can come close to that I'm aware of are Freddie Mercury & Steven Tyler....

I think both When Doves Cry and The Beautiful Ones have this dramatic tense feeling to it in the vocals that I absolutely love. Even though one of these is a ballad and the other a pop masterpiece (but does a great vocal performance need to be in a ballad?).

The If I Was Your Girlfriend vocals are very inventive, therefore, one of his best, for me!

I adore Adore. I thik it's admirable what he did to the variations of its vocal harmonies and registers, but, at some listens, it seems to me (Sue me, too!) that it's a little bit over the top.

The high pitched Kiss, Tamborine and How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore? all show that he's got great vocal abilities and knows how to deliver a falsetto, be it for a tight funk or a emotionally charged soul song.

His version of Love Thy Will Be Done.

Surely the greatest multi layered vocal song ever recored.

Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

All of Prince's ballads are vocal "MasterPieces".Nobody does a ballad like him.Someone mentioned 'FutureBabyMama" .His vocals & background vocals on there we're amazing. The Grammy was well deserved 4 that.

Also his duet "HeLicksher" with his ex Bria from the gold selling album of the same name was astounding.Live it took it to another world....

I don't know if this is his best, but when I saw Prince perform "Somewhere Here on Earth" on Jay Leno it blew me away. I was mesmerized and I watched that clip over and over again.

Keep in mind it was a live performance too!!!

I Hate U--because he keeps changing his voice to suit it. This song is a vocal gymnastics test for any singer.

This is my main problem with Prince now--he is really not using his vocals to the top of the mountain.

You look at the 80s concerts and start shaking your head. Vocal schooling at the best, specially the piano sitdowns.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Damn U is also a pretty fine vocal performance. Especially the 4-octave run down when his "psychedelic shouts" - goosebumps.

And the fabulous rendition of Got A Broken Heart Again on the Aladdin DVD. Yum smile

I Hate U

Shhh

Purple Rain

These cover it all, in my opinion. The control he has is fucking remarkable. His delivery in Purple Rain is simply mind-blowing; something we tend to overlook because we just know it by heart, but every verse is sung so on-point, it's unbelievable. Especially considering it was sung not only in one take, but live on-stage.

love his vocals on "the one". the way he uses dynamics to back up his soft, seductive falsetto is beautiful and organic.

I always loved his voice on Anotherlover.

Damn U, TBO, Adore, Shockadelica, International Lover, When the lights go down, On The Couch, Slow Love, Gotta Broken Heart.. Shit the mans' voice is just shit-hot on so many tunes. No chance at picking a 'best'.

Edit: The Ladder from that soundcheck! And is the funkiest version of Happy Birthday you ever heard from Camden? As Duncan Thickett would say, I think so, I think so.

As for "vocal gymnastics", there're also Kiss, Tamborine, How Come U Don't Call Me, Something in the Water, Solo, what else?
