It's not too bad. It's about the story, not the song. And the lyrics are a lot better than many of his songs. I like the video, too.

Yep, it's just about the story. He's just announcing he finally settled down and married somebody normal. It's good for him, and good to see he touched down to earth, but with him touching down the earth, I guess the distant magic disappeared. In other words this is what stars collide.

I hope he'll continue making good music, cause for now Prince may have found peace but he is finally over as well. I know he doesn't care, and if he doesn't why would anybody care?

But your observations are correct NDRU.

Prince I will always miss and love U.

Well, whatever Prince has gone through in his personal life, I can't say it's helped his output. This is one of the most tragically boring, forgettable songs I have ever heard from him. The trajectory for Prince has gone from groundbreaking and amazing in the 80's to increasingly offensively bad in the 90's to increasingly dull in the 00's. This song is a continuation of that, sadly. Each time I listen to it, I immediately forget it ten seconds after it's over. How sad is it that when you hear a new Prince album these days, you find yourself bored immediately afterward and asking when the next album will be out? The genius has left the building, and he doesn't seem to be coming back.

The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

"Rich Friends", "Cause And Effect", "Purple and Gold", "Everybody Loves Me" are all worse songs than Rock N Roll Love Affair. Rock N Roll Love Affair has musicality, which is something the aforementioned songs lacked. What is overlooked about the new song is that Prince is using a more restrained voice. It's good not to hear him sing in falsetto or use stale drum machine beats that are dated. The music is midwestern and the music is him going to back to his roots. The sound is not that far removed from DIRTY MIND as far as the timbre of the music itself. I liked the analog sound of the drums, electric bass, synths and horn backgrounds.

What the song is lacking is any kind of personality. It's the kind of song an old band of grandfathers would perform at a wedding. The song is so dull, it's impossible for me to even hate it. It's so restrained that there is just nothing here.

The last Prince song that sounded interesting was Future Soul Song, but IIRC that was written during the Emancipation era.

Restrained is the right word. I wouldn't liken it to a grandpa song because those songs have hooks and choruses. Prince knows what a chorus is, for some reason he didn't use one here. This song will never be my favorite, but I agree with you that there's nothing to hate. And, in fact, I think I could even like it.

Also, people keep saying that the song is about the story? Okay, that's fine, but in that case you need especially good lyrics. The Ballad of Dorothy Parker is more about the story than the music, but it has some of his subtlest, most likeable and deceptively simple lyrics.

What depth is there here?

this kind of love don't come from a prayer

ain't talking rebound, born of despair

yellow sun rising on their bodies in bed

two people in love with nothing but the road ahead

These lyrics typify today's Prince and the simplistic turn he made after TRC. Gone are the double entendres, puzzling metaphors, or any trace of subtext found in his stronger, cleverer work. These lyrics lack all subtlety; the extent of their depth is so limited, you extract all there is the first time 'round. The meaning is simply what it appears to be; nothing more.

Compare that with Dorothy Parker:

Well, I ordered, "Yeah, let me get a fruit cocktail, I ain't too hungry" Dorothy laughed She said, "Sound like a real man to me You kinda cute, you wanna take a bath? Do you wanna, do you wanna? Bath"
I said, "Cool, I'm leavin' my pants on", "What you say?" "'Cuz I'm kinda goin' with someone" She said, "Sound like a real man to me
The juxtaposition of mockery in the original remark of "Sound like a real man to me" with the turn toward sincerity in its repetition is the kind of depth Prince used to be great at conveying.

little red corevette always sounds sad to me. the saddest. to me this is the flip side, very restrained, but exactly same tone as little red corvette. sad and who knows (what is the out come of this descion).

young and move out west

pay dues to see what is out there

a new couple

who knows what the future holds in this 'love'

if you get little red corvette then i dont need to explain

its sad and scary and sad and possibly optomistic

why i like it

If this is the SINGLE from an upcoming album, I'm going to have to buy some better earplugs. I usually hate all the negativity on this site, but in this case, I think it's needed. We know you can do better, Prince.

I think his story/lyrics in "Long Gone" (Andy Allo's song that he wrote) has more depth. There you can see that he is still capable of depth in his lyrics. I also think "Elixir" (Bria Valente's song that he wrote) has that sexual storytelling, double entendres and metaphors from days of yore.

For some reason, he gives some of his strongest material to the weakest performers instead of doing them himself nowadays.

I still check in on Prince everyonce in a while, and I'll admit I'm not always pleased, but I'm forever indebted to him for introducing me to various types of different music , especially Orchestral music through Claire Fischer. As for the song-meh. But sometimes Prince surprises me. When I'm not looking forward to something I'm PLEASEANTLY surprised by an album and sometimes when I am looking forward to an album I'm dissapointed. And time seems to change my judgement. I loved Diamnonds & Pearls when it came out, but after a couple of years I couldn't be bothered. But I say each to his own. If you like it rock out. If you don't turn it off. C'mon, do you really think Prince cares what we think anyways? Besides, and I know we are not supposed to discuss this type of thing here, but I have...aquired music from "The Vault" and I think he's still sitting on some great stuff. We'll see if it sees the light of day. My friends think he's waiting untill the day when he's physically unable to produce music anymore. Wouldn't it be like Prince to do that? Noone would really care if it was old stuff and it would be Prince's way of saying SUCK ON THIS!lol

They still have it, however importcds is out of stock. Amazon has a few for sale, so does ebay, but the ones on ebay are overpriced then @purplemusic.ch. Shipping is expensive, but you can cut this down by ordering more products (same cost though). They also have dance 4 me remixes, but you have to search around in order to find it.

Mine Shipped from Amazon.. from seller "marvelio"..

$12.01 with shipping, I'm in the US.. so the price isn't too steep, the song, I'm starting to grow an attachment to, but I did hear the samples of the remix and not a fan of them, then again I wasn't a fan of the "Dance 4 Me" remixes either and I actually love the original version of that song. Hopefully I will physically have it in a few days.

Are the tracklistings the same for the 12" and picture disc.. not that it matters, since I dont have a record player.. but I Do see that you can buy the song and remixes in digital form from the site.

With reminds me, with Superconductor.. I bought digitally from Amazon when it came out.. and then when buying RRLA.. I saw Superconductor available on physical CD so I bought it not even thinking i got sold Twice on the album, but I dont care.. I really like Allo's CD.. and since I was on a spree, I added Larry Graham's new one to the cart and I was able to hear that one on Spotify and enjoyed it.. so.. should be an interesting visit from Fedex in a few days. It sure isn't like the good old days when we knew weeks ahead WHAT day a CD would be in a store.. Go to the store and its THERE (or call ahead and pre-order it) and bring it home.. I sure miss that part of buying a new CD.

And has anyone bought fDeluxe new release "Relit"... Wish I could sample that before buying.. I like Gaslight, but I'm not understanding Paul Peterson's fascination with the 100 different remixes, its like he's not happy with any of the original versions or something.
