I therefore take it that this new leak is not tagged and has therefore been "authorized"?

Like I said, this version (the version being discussed here) has been tagged...

I don't know who "authorizes" anything, just saying that this "new" version has been tagged prior to it being shared to a select few...

8 December 1985
Prince gets together with Eric Leeds, Sheila E. and Levi Seacer Jr. to jam at Sunset Sound.
The quartet recorded a highly spontaneous "Paisley Jam" session. Eric played saxophone, Sheila drums, Levi bass, while Prince alternated between guitar and piano. Eight instrumentals were committed to tape:

"Slaughterhouse"
"U Just Can't Stop"
"Run Amok"
"Mobile"
"Madrid"
"Breathless"
"High Colonic"
"12 Keys"

They were given titles simply to facilitate their identification. Accordingly "Madrid" was named so because it had a kind of Spanish feel, while "Mobile" (referring to Mobile, Alabama) was a bluesy piece. Similarly "12 Keys" featured mmany key changes (the song incorporates a portion of the melody of "The Question Of U"). Eric went into the studio the next day to record saxophone and flute over dubs on some of the "Paisley Jam" tracks.

30 December 1985
Fired up by the results of the "Paisley Jam", Prince is back in the Sunset Sound studio with Eric, Sheila and Levi. They recorded "U Gotta Shake Something", "Voodoo Who" and "Finest Whisky" during another highly relaxed session. By now, Prince was beginning to realise that the music they were creating was highly exciting and perhaps worthy of release.

5 January 1986
Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin and her brother Jonathan, join the line-up of Prince, Eric, Sheila and Levi in the Sunset Sound studio for an exhausting seven-hour session, the so-called "Everybody's Jam". Six of the pieces hat were recorded were given titles:

"Groove in C Minor"
"Slow Groove in G Major"
"Groove in G Flat Minor"
"Junk Music"
"Up From Below"
"Y'all Want Some More?"

During this session, Prince played primarily drums, while Sheila and Jonathan played percussion, Lisa piano and Wendy guitar and bass.

22 January 1986
An album is assembled from the instrumental sessions held in late Dec. 1985 and early Jan. 1986. Around 20 minutes of the 45 minute "Junk Music" was going to make up side one of the LP, while "Up From Below", "Y'all Want Some More?" and "A Couple Of Miles" were planned for side two of the LP. No test pressing of The Flesh LP was ever made, however, and the album was shelved when Under The Cherry Moon and other activities demanded Prince's full attention.

// So the tracklist for the LP was sequenced:

Side A:
1. Junk Music

Side B:
2. Up From Below
3. Y'All Want Some More?
4. A Couple Of Miles [This was recorded as a tribute to Miles Davis in late December]

//

Featuring largely improvisional music, the Flesh sessions allowed Prince to stretch out musically and develop his musical vocabulary. The Flesh can be seen as a forerunner to Prince's later Madhouse project in more wanys than one.
Much like Madhouse, the musical focus of The Flesh was on instrumental music, basically funk jams with a distrinct jazz flavour added by Eric Leeds, who was given the opportunity to contribute more actively to Prince's music. And much like Madhouse the plan was ro release The Flesh album "anonymously" with few details about the participants and certainly no mention of Prince's involvement.

The Flesh instrumentals remain unreleased, although part of the melody for "Madrid" was later re-used by Eric for "Andorra" on his 1991 Times Squared album. Additionally, some 30 seconds of "Junk Music" made it into Under The Cherrymoon as background music (in the scene where Tricky and Christopher are arguing over what type of man Mary Sharon prefers).

Further Sunset Sound sessions in January included work on several tracks for Jill Jones' album. Before leaving for L.A. in late January, Prince taped 2 songs for Dream Factory, "Last Heart" and "It's A Wonderful Day".

what's with all the pseudo cia stancing about who shared what and wether it's been tagged or not?

someone obviously had this, and that same someone made copies or willingly shared them with a

select few others.

in this day and age, you know that stuff is going to leak. so why share it even with a select few if

it's that important that it stay behind closed doors?

it's childish to first allow others, however few, to have a copy and to then come on a public thread

about the material to start acting like heads are going to roll or like no one is ever going to get an

outtake again because 1 or 2 people couldn't keep their end of the deal and not circulate stuff.

if stuff has been stolen from you, or your computer has been hacked into, that's another matter.

than again, we're talking stuff that's being traded on the dl since it's stolen goods to start with lol

whatever. intentional or contrary to direct orders, i'm still thankful to whomever put this out there

for all of us to enjoy. a great little tune from a great era. excellent stuff.

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. Sounds great. 1982-1988 are certainly my favorite years. Early Madhouse sound for sure. music

Seems like when we get a new official single from Prince lately it's been followed up by a near perfect quality unreleased track from out of nowhere. Can't help to wonder how many of these unreleased tracks have had some help getting out of the vault from it's owner? hmmm I really doubt someones been sitting on this stuff for all these years. If Prince is just sharing these that there are very few who have this material and he'd be all over it in a hot mess. Who really knows? Obviously not me. I'm just happy to get to hear some of this stuff in my lifetime. Funny how he expects his vault material to be released someday just not by him. Assuming he means after he passes of course but still the fact he acknowledges it will be released someday makes me wonder if he has and idea of what stuff he'd like out there when he's gone. I know I'm just talking out my ass but it's fun to speculate. See what a old school tune will do to ya? wink

[Edited 10/15/12 6:12am]

NO, NO, NO, NO!!!

Please don't go there, don't start this again, STOP!!!

"Who really knows"? Many people on this forum, actually. Prince didn't leak A Couple Of Miles. This I know for a fact because I more or less know where the leak comes from. I also know the backstory of a few other circulating recordings (both studio and live) and many people here know more stories than I do and have occasionally shared these infos on this very forum. We DO know where the tapes come from. We know some names, we know some stories, different people know different bits and pieces and when you've hung out in this community and read fan forums for as long as I have, you end-up figuring out some parts of the puzzle.

Besides, several Prince associates explained that the leaks mostly came from tapes Prince made for friends, collaborators, labels executives or girlfriends in the 80's and early 90's. There may have been a few people stealing shit from Prince at some point, too, but it is unsure when and how they did it. No one can be in a "hot mess" because most of these people have been out of Prince's camp for years if not decades so they ain't got no job to lose, and there is no way to prove legally that they did anything. Still, it has been rumored that some outtakes which are held by a few collectors are still being kept private in order to protect some people whose interests are still linked to Prince's. Don't start spreading rumors and conspiracy theories wink jk

It is very clear that, though being aware of the risks when giving tapes (which he completely stopped doing in 1996 and oh! no more outtakes ever since, how odd!), Prince most likely never, EVER, willingly allowed any "bootleg" studio or live recording to reach bootleggers and/or the internet community.

So please just quit spreading conspiracy theories which happen to have been proven wrong countless times. There is no debate. It's not about what you THINK and what I THINK, it's about what we KNOW.

Thanks.

Now if we may go back to the topic at hand biggrin

Oh settle down.

Speading theories? What did I start before??? Go jump someone else's shit. If you could read I pretty much admit I have no clue how these get leaked and that I was talking out my ass.

The fact still remains up til 1996 he still shared tapes etc. He didn't figure out before that folks can't be trusted with it and stuff would eventually leak?

Obviously my comment regarding the timing of these releases would indicate Prince has nothing to do with these leaks.

I do believe he has some thought in the back of his mind as what to do with his vault material after he passes on just by his comment on the most recent appearance on the View.

Over the last 15 years there have been shitloads of posts on various Prince fora or NG's or whatever about why people can't/won't/don't share outtakes... Next time do a fucking search and inform yourself...

And another thing about this "new" outtake, it was tagged back in 1998/1999 and shared with a select few, what happened in the last 13 years nobody knows but the initial bunch who had it have been marked... Just saying...

I don't keep up anymore what's being "leaked" or sneakily released on youtube or wherever else on the internet, but the "leaked" versions I've heard lately of Lisa's "Our Destiny", "American in Paris", "Go" (not tagged but severly watered down) "Dorothy Parker" and "Stimulation #2" are all the tagged versions from way back when (1995-2003)

I don't know whatever else has been "leaked" lately and frankly don't care anymore...

Shit got shared (tagged or watered down) a long time ago to mark some people and it's funny to see these versions rearing their heads finally after all these years...

I know it has been shared with a few fans a coupla months ago, under the promise that they wouldn't share it online or even mention that they have it on forums, as it may make some people angry and compromise the future leak of the full album. So I hope this is an "authorized" preview of what's to come and not someone who fucked up. If it is an "unauthorized" leak, I beg the powers that be not to punish the whole community out of a single person's mistake. If it's the "legit" preview of an upcoming full album leak, then my deep thanks go to everyone involved.

The Flesh is by far the most wanted unreleased-uncirculating Prince project, it would definitely be a wonderful thing to have it in its entirety. This track alone is a gem!

I wonder if only the album is in possession of elite collectors or if, by some miracle, the Paisley Jam and Everybody Jam sessions may be out as well. That would be astonishing to hear

cool biggrin

[Edited 10/14/12 23:49pm]

Databank,

This is not a good move for whomever did this, I can tell you that much.

It was supposed to stay behind closed doors, period...

peace

J-

Totally out of topic I'll take this opportunity, because I don't think I ever did it before, to tell you that Like Weather may be one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded, and definitely one of my favorite songs ever. I actually wrote a couple of really cool poems while listening to it back in 2006 so I owe you one. Thanks for releasing this gem biggrin biggrin biggrin

Back to topic, well, I'm not sure I get it all because I'm not sure who wanted what (leak or not leak) and who did what (sharing with selected folks, sharing with everyone) in the parties involved, but I guess that means nothing else coming and that's a pity neutral

What I seem to understand is that there are some people who have uncirculating stuff who want to share it and some who don't. I'm not going to go judmental on those who don't, I'm sure they have their reasons and it's a free world anyway. I just read between lines that both Perfect Unreleased Prince and this new leak made some people unhappy. But it seems -from what a few clues suggest- that the 2 leaks came from 2 different people. And on the other hand I remember some promises were made for more uncirculating stuff 2 or 3 years back, by yet other people who said that they felt it was a moral obligation to leave such a precious heritage to humanity since no one knows if Prince will release any of it, and that they were going to "remaster" and share that stuff, little by little. And then Parade Demos, Box Of Chocolate, several rehearsals and 2 versions of Exodus and finally the 4 outtakes last spring surfaced but all on different free-boots labels, which made it even more confusing. And "you-know-who", who supposedly had more stuff to share than he already had, but didn't want to, just let 10,000 Wallpaper get out (though, I'll give you that, nothing on it was new, only with better sound quality). And then came Perfect, and now this... So I wonder what's coming... or not. What is supposed to be coming with everyone involved agreeing to it, and what may be coming despite some people not wanting it. It's like there is a secret story happening behind the curtains and we only get glimpses of it, and it's sooooo frustrating and intriguing lol lol lol

This is a cool track.

I like the overall sound and vibe a little bit more than the Madhouse stuff. I find the Madhouse records oddly restrained and this sounds at least a little bit wilder. However, based on this track alone I find Eric Leeds' comments about the "Flesh sessions" having been "the closest thing" they ever got to recording jazz a bit odd. I wouldn't call this one jazz or even jazz-funk - it's really just instrumental funk - but it could be of course that the other Flesh tracks have more of a proper jazz feel to them. It's not unusual for Prince to conclude an album with an uplifting, more straightforward funk track.

I think Eric meant the band recordings, not this one track in particular. And IIRC he meant a jazz "spirit", not a jazz sound per se. What he said (once again IIRC, I read this a few years back) was that Prince never played jazz in the traditionnal sense but that there was more jazz ethics in some of Prince's impro sessions than in some jazz bands he's played with earlier in his life, and for that reason I guess he liked The Flesh and 16 more than 8 and 24 which were just Prince in the studio.

The BOC version is identical to the album version, just not mastered and possibly slightly different mix. A version with overdubs by Eric Leeds is known to exist, and known to be in the possession of some collectors as well, but uncirculating so far.

Stimulation we never had any version so far: http://princevault.com/in...timulation

Are we talking about the Box O' Chocolate's version of "Dorothy Parker" or is there another one?

I hate all this cryptic talk.

Obviously the one with Eric Leeds? No one ever mentioned Dorothy and Stimulation being out on this forum before, and they ain't the easiest titles to look for on Google so IDK what this is about eek eek

Ah, the elusive extended version. Never know of its existence(and the Adore extended version) till I heard the P&B podcast.

Its a matter of time till they leak if they're in fact out there.

ah ok, now i see. that makes it all a bit more understandable. the tracks were 'tagged' all the

way back in the 90s and they haven't surfaced until very recently.

that's still quite an accomplishment, that people kept sitting on those for so long. who knows

how or why people are chosing to put them up now.

but whatever, it's great for us mere mortals lol

from the way people were talking i thought these were only recently uncovered somehow and

some sercret prince society was listening to these in dark vaulted rooms, swearing oaths not

to let those tracks fall into the hands of the unclean biggrin

as for "the flesh". for me personally, "a couple of miles" was always going to be the one track

i wanted most. it's the one that has prince doing almost everything (except eric's input).

all the other tracks are mainly entire band on the spot compositions. and although that would

be a great thing to hear, i'm always more interested in stuff that is almost entirely prince. it's

just a preference.

i've listened to "a couple of miles" about 10 times today and i'm quite crazy about it. music

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

it's funny to me to prefer the 'prince only' recordings - most of all prince's output comes from him first, either in the form of a demo, written lyrics/score or just his instructions to band members/musicians. think Willing and Able without the NPG, it wouldn't be the same or Rainbow Children without John Blackwell, or Parade without Wendy & Lisa - they wouldn't sound the same.

I love the self created stuff, but it's nice that we get the input of others into Prince's world aswell.

Not to poo-poo what you said because I agree, but I brushed away the cobwebs and there's a lingering thought in my mind that I remember reading 'A Couple Of Miles' was a studio effort by Prince only with overdubs from Eric, and wasn't part of the larger jam sessions that the rest of the Flesh material sprung from. (Which I guess would in fact make it more of a precursor to the first Madhouse album than the rest of the stuff)

If I'm mistaken, paint a target on my ass and my forehead because I can't find the source for this, but I'm sure I remember reading this in the Vault or somewhere. confuse

Parade without Clare Fisher would be a better example, I think. Anyway - I'm with IstenSzek on this one.

The wooh is on the one!

Nothing cryptic here, that BOC shit is just what always was BOC from a lower gen tape or better sources, nothing else...

"Doroty Parker" is the longer lingering version before it was cut down for "Dream Factory"...

But that tagged version is slightly longer because of a repeater/skip tag...

yeah i was wondering if Dorothy Parker was that version and Stimulation is another name for something we already have?

When you hear "Stimulation" you'll know it's "Stimulation"... Hard to give it another name...

BTW this is an edited/overdubbed version (possibly proposed single version so no album version) of the "Rave Unto The joy Fantastic" 1989 version...

Forgot to say that the 12" "Trust"/"Vicki Waiting" is also out there (correction: only "Trust" is tagged, "Vicki Waiting" is completely as is...)

I do not know who finally is throwing this stuff out online, but my bet is it's not possible to burn any bridges anymore that's why these are coming out now... Backstabbing an invisible back, but in the end, who cares, they're tagged anyway...
