Could Madonna have helped UTCM???

Madonna Bows Out Of `Moon`

September 13, 1985|New York Daily News

Well, Prince is back, but Madonna doesn`t have him.

Under the Cherry Moon, which obviously was written to be a cinematic coupling of these two hot rock stars, started filming Wednesday in the South of France, under the direction of Mary Lambert (who was at the helm of all Madonna`s music videos, including Material Girl ) - but it's filming without Madonna. For reasons that nobody cares to go into, the Madonna role is being played by Suzanna, who hails from Prince`s band, the Family. She'll be a spoiled rich brat of 21 who's kidnapped by Prince, who portrays a winsome Riviera hustler.

...and then we learn that Madonna later turned down Graffitti Bridge as well; from DMSR:

During their meeting Madonna told a flabbergasted Prince he was stupid and referred to the script as "a piece of shit'

Yikes...

Naw, it'd be a catty slap-fight for first billing.

That said, such a slap-fight would make a hell of a movie... biggrin

Actually, Kristen Scott Thomas is one of the best things about the movie.

That would have been the worst onscreen pairing since... ever. Madonna is an even worse actor than Prince, the two of them together would have been a disaster.

I think Prince should have asked Sheena Easton to co-star in UTCM with him. That role would have been perfect for her....

Sheena's a singer so Prince could have written a few songs for her, which could have been included in the film:

"Sometimes It Snows In April" lead vocals by Sheena Easton hmmm

Madonna would have made UTCM utterly unwatchable. She’s a horrible actress. The only role she’s managed to pull off was the lead in Evita, which was just a really long Madonna video. If Madonna and Prince collaborated on UTCM it would have been the worst film of the 1980s.

i agree with the sheena easton getting the role could made it more of a musical type black and white film like the oldies. i love the concept and the idealism of under the cherry man i think what would of helped it was if people werent expecting prince 2 do another purple rain type movie. i gllad he used actua loctaions instead of cheesy sound stages which made utcm more realistic

Why was Prince always so obsessed with wanting to work with Madonna's limited-talent ass?

First he wanted her to be in UTCM, which she turned down. Then he finally convinces her to do a duet, which became "Love Song" for her Like a Prayer album. Then after that, he wanted her to be in Grafitti Bridge, which she declined. And then in the late 90's, he wanted to duet with her again but she turned him down (hence the daggers in his eyes and refusing to clap when she won a VMA at the '99 VMA Awards).

I just don't get why he wanted to work with her so much. Was it a case of him being used to everyone telling him yes, and when someone actually turned him down, he couldn't handle it?hmmm

Madonna couldn't even save her own films, never mind anyone elses.

I think it was just allure of having two big stars in the same thing, kind of how MJ wanted Prince for Bad. And IIRC their meeting re: GB was before 'Love Song', pretty sure it was for the role of Ruthie Washington not Aura.

Ok, I just searched on the Ruthie Washington character (I'm not as knowledgable on Prince as most fans on this site). So, Madonna's character was to be a love interest of Prince's character?

This is one of those moments where someone should post the original drafting of GB, so we can chime in on whether it was truly "a piece of shit".

Prince was/is a huge fan of Madonna. But it makes sense that they didn't work together too often. They both have strong egos and personalities, which could have resulted in alot of ugly drama.Prince likes women that he can control and I don't think Madonna is that kind of woman.

omg.

I'm imagining a mash-up of Shanghai Surprise and Under The Cherry Moon. They were Madonna's & Prince's high-profile cinematic disasters of 1986.

If they could have somehow managed to turn these into one film, with these two co-headlining, I can't imagine a more gloriously embarrassing piece of shit to have ever graced the silver screen. biggrin

Missed opportunity sad

Ummm... considering what made it to the screen, I really don't think that there's any chance that an earlier draft could be qualified as anything better than a "piece of shit."

Uptown magazine once posted this early script and it is dreadful,to say to least barf This was the script that Prince presented to Madonna in September 1987.Her character was one of Prince's love interests.Cat played his other love interest.I'm sure that someone will find that script and post it here.Be warned: it is awful, lol.

It's been out there for years so I think a google search will give you what you want. I seem to remember a thread about it recently even.

I haven't seen it in years, but I do remember it being more wacky and ethereal than the finished thing - but maybe in a good way? I got Alice in Wonderland vibes from it, rather than RuPaul does West Side Story, but I think Prince just plays a stroppy teenage girl in whatever he does.

The project was a mis-step IMO, whether it was the original script and follow-up album to SOTT, or the hodgepotch Frankenstein of leftover script ideas and musical odds-n-sods we got, I don't think it matters. I think I said this once before, but to me GB is like the post-coital exhaustive groan after the orgasmic highs of the 80s. The only mystery may be why Prince held on to the project for such a long time, putting it on the back burner whilst several other projects took priority, when time after time he had thrown out much more highly regarded or intriguing projects seemingly on a whim. Obviously at the time what he was trying to do with the idea or phrase of Graffiti Bridge was something he really did want to get out there whatever the end result.

Under The Cherry Moon IS the second worst film of the 1980s. The worst will forever be Graffiti Bridge. Madonna couldn't have made either of them more worse, even if she would have tried really hard. UTCM was the very first indicator of Prince's lost taste and quality control. When GB was released his loss of what made him unbeatable once was in full "jack" swing. Ever since then the guy was a moron who happened to have very few good moments inbetween. Maybe it's because he's taking himself far too seriously. Maybe not. Maybe nobody really cares. I don't. Why am I writing this stuff here anyway? PLEASE BRING BACK SUE ELLEN EWING. LIFE HAD BEEN FUN WHEN SHE PAVED THE WAY FOR PRINCE'S LOOKS.
