Prince had Barnard jazz up the video by having various textual phrases dart across the screen, including "Don't buy The Black Album, I'm sorry," and "Ecstasy."

I need to see a screen cap, for proof of the word "ecstacy." All the years of meticulously watching ALL the messages in this video, I have never seen that word in it.

Must have ended up on the cutting room floor, if it was ever in there.

Yeah I wonder how much was cut, since Sheila &/or Cat are supposed to be in it, and the only image of an unidentified woman is the one in the black heals knee down

July 27. 1988
( LoveSexy Tour )
Olympic Studio, London
Recording Session: God Is Alive w/Mavis Staples

another Lovesexy era song, I still remember when I 1st saw Prince of Paisley Park (which was basically a videography of the Lovesexy era) and Mavis talking about how this recording came about

It was performed live during some LS aftershows, and during a few concerts

God Is Alive is an unreleased track recorded in June, 1988, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA, shortly before the European Lovesexy Tour. Prince worked on the track further on 27 July, 1988 at Olympic Studios, London, England, when Mavis Staples' vocal overdubs were recorded (a snippet of this recording session was shown on the Prince - A Musical Portrait documentary).

The track was included as the tenth and final track on the 25 September, 1988 configuration of Graffiti Bridge, and the following month was included on the 27 October, 1988 configuration of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic. It was also included as the seventh track on a late 1988 or early 1989 configuration of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, but the album was ultimately abandoned.

Prince & Mavis Staples ~ “God Is Alive” ~ recording session - July 1988

****** ******

Flash, flash!
Jack just got the news
God is alive! God is alive!

CHORUS:
Whoa, oh! {x3}
God is alive

News is comin' like a hurricane
Comin' down hard on those who live in vain
Treatin' each other funky when U know we're all the same
God is alive, this is not a game

CHORUS
(He's alive)

News is comin' like a dog in heat
He's lookin' 4 soldiers with strong feet
That can dance on whoever can't say His name
God is alive, this is not a game (Listen)

CHORUS
(Listen)
(Yeah, I'm a witness)
(Do U believe?) (U know it)

All of His children come take a blissy ride
4 all who see Him, 4 all He lives inside
U can be so happy, purely satisfied
God is alive

Live, live!

One step at a time, we need a new rhyme (Alive)
Up with education, down with crime
Alive!

CHORUS
(God is alive!)

Live, live!
God is alive! {x5}

(CHORUS) {repeat parts in BG}
Oh yeah
Woke me up this morning
Started me on my day
Got my health and strength, y'all
I can truly say
Ooh, He's alive! Well
Ah, He's alive!
All over me
Ah, He's alive!
I'm a livin' witness
That God's alive!
I'm a livin' witness He's alive!
Do U believe that He's alive?
Do U believe, oh, He's alive?
Ooh, yes He is
Sho'nuff He is, well
Yes He is
Each breath I breathe lets me know
Every step I take lets me know
Every song I sing, oh, lets me know
Oh, God is alive!

Whoa, oh

I like how he album is programmed with no breaks between the songs. Even when you can pick out a single track and enjoy, there's nothing as good as pushing play on the whole album. Dance on ! PS Anna Steisa is still stunning.

Such a shame because the title track is excellent, and I think it's the song that had the best chance of being a major hit.It really should have been the second single.

BorisFishpaw said:

The song "Lovesexy" got extremely close to being released before it was shelved. Prince decided at the last minute that he'd changed his mind about releasing Glam Slam as the second single and wanted to release Lovesexy instead. But at that stage WB had already pressed Glam Slam which was ready to ship. Plus promos had already been issued to radio stations. So both parties agreed to go with Glam Slam and release Lovesexy as the third single. The Lovesexy Single edit and 12" Remix were completed and the idea was to use Superfunkycalifragisexy from the shelved Black Album as the B-Side. But for some strange reason Prince didn't release Lovesexy as the third single afterall, and went with I Wish U Heaven instead (probably because Lovesexy was then too old for him and he'd just created the 12" Remix for I Wish U Heaven, so was more into releasing that instead).

I love this era,but I'm not too crazy about the B-sides."Escape" is kinda weak, and "This Is Not Music,This Is A Trip" was nothing to write home about, either.

"Scarlet Pussy" is the best of the bunch, but even this song feels like a throwaway.

I agree with U

Its a fade compared to the Bsides of pre-Lovesexy

those 2 seem 2 just be 'extensions' of sorts of the 'A' sides

Scarlet Pussy was sorta a throwaway, because it was written 4 Sheila E's 4th album

the theme didn't go with Lovesexy at all to me, actually it reminds me of La La La He He Hee and feels like something from that 'period'

We Got The Power
"We Got The Power" was recorded in October 1988, in between shows on the Lovesexy tour. The song is sometimes referred to as "Dance With Power," but the engineer who worked on the song remembers it as "We Got The Power." The track is preceded by a brief robotic-sounding countdown lifted from Roger Vadim's 1967 film Barbarella. This countdown was later used in "Live 4 Love" on the Diamonds And Pearls album. "We Got The Power" is a fast, exuberant dance number propelled by a pumping synth bass, not dissimilar to the later "The Undertaker". The bass and a percussive drum machine beat provide a foundation on top of which Prince adds dissonant horn-like riffs and all manner of sound effects. The chorus features a multi-tracked choir with female vocalists, most likely Boni Boyer and Sheila E., singing along with Prince. The chorus, slightly changed, was lifted for use in "Batdance." A chant of "hey, we got the power, oh we got the soul" also became an important ingredient in the Carmen Electra outtake "Power From Above." It is obvious that Prince is referring to the power of God and the song ties in with the predominantly spiritually-oriented material Prince was writing at the time.

It was included on a 27 October, 1988, configuration of Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic, but was not included on the late 1988 / early 1989 configuration.

The track mentions some of Prince's band members from the time; "Junior" (Levi Seacer, Jr.) and "Doctor" (Dr. Fink), and mentions "an angel" for a drummer (Sheila E.'s name in the original Graffiti Bridge movie script was "Angel"), which may be a reason the track wasn't used once the group disbanded. -sources from wikipedia & princevault

The appreciation of Lovesexy is overshadowed by the admirating 4 his precedent: Sign O the times!

I was overwelmed by the fresh sound and great production on this album, it was my fav Prince album 4 more than a decade! After SOTT this was a powerfull, compact punch in your face!

These days I prefer SOTT and PR, maybe because I´ve listened 2

Lovesexy 2 much.

Escape is a great b-side-I also love Glam Slam so this is almost the same.

And yes, Scarlett Pussy sounds like something from the SOTT period.

I didn´t know Electric Chair, Pink Cashmere and Still would stand all time were recorded

in this period, thanx 4 the info! Imagine Lovesexy would have been a CD release with those songs included!!!!!!!!!! I loooove Electric Chair....and also Pink Cashmere, it would have made this album even better, and I already was such a fan of Lovesexy!

Lovesexy is one of those albums I still play often. It has pure genius along with songs I didn't like too much. I didn't really care for Eye No, Lovesexy and Positivity. The rest of the album is incredible. I think Sheila E's influence is the reason why the album is so powerful. When she's involved with a project it always goes to another level
