Every time I listen to this song I think it's more than Prince just being jealous f how women are so close to each other and adoring how women's friendship is all about sharing.

With that wedding march intro....I'd always imagined the song was about Prince attending a wedding ceremony of his ex-girlfriend's. He accepts the reality; he can't win his girlfriend back, she's found a new man in her life. He looks at the bride&groom sadly and thinks to himself he would do anything to get close to her cuz obviously he's still in love with her. He then starts to fantasize about being her best friend because that's the only way he can be near her.
