I'm sorry Prettyman and Dig I'm not trying to be mean, but I have wanted to speak on Shelby for a while now. The last time I saw Prince I paid $300 for two seats and it was just Prince so I was happy. If he ever comes this way and I spend that kinda cheddar to have this woman all over the damn stage Imma be a mad bitch lol If I pay-I wanna see Prince and maybe an opening act-not try outs for Star Wars.

spit someone used 2 call those outfits "rejects from space ghost" lol

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

What? Unselfishly allowing another artist to share the spotlight? Doesn't sound like a problem. He did the same with W&L when they were on stage with him in the past. That's how come their names are remembered among Prince's fan base. Besides, real talent lasts longer than a 'hot piece of ass'. Anyway, it's cool he's sharing snippets of the rehearsals with fans.

[Edited 4/23/12 9:34am]

Wendy & Lisa never sang lead live, and never overtook Prince's vocals. They also never lead the crowd through endless chants that simply took away the seriousness of the concert. For example, I love Elton John, but he joined Prince's band and simply chanted all the time, and took lead vocals on cover songs, it would be a waste of talent. Prince is wasting Shelby's talent on giving him less to do. It's obvious somebody isn't willing to do the work.

wendy did take over vocals for I wonder u but that's nothing like what ur saying i understand.

I think Shelby is much better looking than Mayte. I also think she has great talent, and a fine voice. That doesn't stop me from thinking Prince has abused her role to the point of Self-Parody. Shouting "Put Your Hands Up," more than 10 times is weird. Shouting it over 100 times at a show is Self-Parody, and something a musician of Prince's level should never allow. She can sing, but if Prince is going to do a 90 minute concert, having her sing even one song is too much. Hey, I love Prince, but I don't have unconditional love for anybody. If Prince is screwing up, I'll give my opinion. I was laughed at for loving Lovesexy by friends, but now many of them respect me for sticking with Prince.

That lame ass siren noise in this is typical of Prince not being able to control his weak side. That same side that allowed Tony M to rap about Manure in My Name is Prince. Not too many people ever rap about Manure while wearing a Star Trek Next Generation outfit...do they?

Have U ever once thought that Prince cares about these people? That he gets joy being around them. It was obvious that he was very very close once 2 Tony M & loved being in his company. From being a fan of Prince 4 so long . eye 've noticed when he loves or cares about someone. He puts them on his payroll & helps them . WHAT THE EFF IS WRONG WITH THAT? HE LOVES LARRY, HE LOVES SHELBY.Deal with it or turn in ur purple card & go listen 2 someone else boo boo.

[Edited 4/23/12 13:20pm]

he loved tony m so much that tony had 2 sue just 2 get credit and royalties for his contributions boo boo ...again school's in!

This is just ok. The funk has been watered down a bit, and too many female vocals. I like the Dance Electric a little better. That siren sound is typical Prince using a Goofball sound effect instead of just letting the music jam instead.

Why are you saying this?

Shelby's voice irritates me as much as Mayte's.

But Mayte never had such a dominant position at P's shows!

And for more than 5 M.F. YEARS now !!! Got it?

Mayte was Prince main dancer 4 over 3 years. eye never heard all this criticism over her. Like U people show toward Shelby. Prince even produced Mayte's album....All this hate & dis respectfulness U show toward her needs to stop. Obviously Prince doesn't care. Because he keeps putting her out front even more. So he obviously reads what U say about her.

I have a feeling if you paid $324 for a Prince concert that turned out to be 110 minutes with Shelby singing lead on 10 songs, Prince singing lead on 3, and if Shelby had a 20 minute version of her "Put Your Hands Up Chant" featuring Tony M, you would probably say it was the most fantastic thing you ever heard.

Like I said before, Shelby has great vocal talent, but when I pay huge money for a Prince concert, I want a focused Prince concert, not annoying chants and songs cut short by shortened song lyrics, and Backup singers taking center stage too much.

i think its prince trying to legitamize his women that makes it hard to swallow .. like if carmen electras album sucks .. no body cares .. no body expected much .. but why is it that vanity singing about a vibrator sounds more pure, sincere and authentic than anything that comes out of shelbys mouth .. if prince had made a bria record full of slut jams people would have been delightfully impressed .. but all this oh andy allo is legitamate oh shelby is a bald bad ass sunday choir singer, and bria is a soul singer .. ug puke .. just write a song called my wet purple panties and hit start on your drum machine .. we need some truth up in this princeosphere .. lets just judge these women by their looks .. mayte was better looking than prince whole gold era of musical output .. shes a winner in my book, never bothered with her record .. andy looks sweaty and gross in all her pics .. shelby is just not rockin the bald look .. and neither have rose above tony m. status musically .. so prince please stop trying to legitimize your crappy back up band .. go back to playing with punks and musicians daughters .. that was the soup that made you ligitimate .. enough with all your hangers on

Maybe the shows have changed up drastically since I saw the three Welcome to America shows in NY and NJ but Shelby did NOT sing lead on 10 songs and was NOT center stage. Most of the time my eyes were on Prince the whole time. This is an over-exaggerating.

The point is, W&L had had heavy exposure during their time with him and their names were pretty much liinked to his more than the other band members at the time, so whether they didn't sing lead with him on stage, they had plenty of he spotlight shine on them, and they did 'sing' with him on stage, during many of the concerts with him over the years. Now he's giving other artists the spotlight, especially since he's given so much of his own talent over the years, and continues to do so. Also, that last statement makes no sense. How is he wasting Shelby's talent? She she gets a chance to display her singing skills/talent on stage with him, as well as the other band members. Like I said, it's apparent Prince is content with her as a band member.

When you actually get to be the leader of Prince's band, then you can call the shots, but at the moment, you don't have a kernel of popcorn to do either. lol popcorn

I wish everyone who feels they know what Prince should and shouldn't be doing musically would put together a band themselves and show us what we're all supposedly missing! That's the problem on here too many critics with the answers to the supposed problems of this mans 30 plus year career. If you all know what's is and what isn't funky then put you money where your mouth is and drop your CD and blow us all away. Until then it's all just blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah blahblah .

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

there is no need 4 anyone 2 put their own cd or band together 2 state the obvious what's missing. now i will say that i didn't see fdeluxe when they came 2 NYC recently but i belive u did. their version of mutiny was WAY FUNKIER and more HARD HITTING then this. but that's what missing in prince's current state, the funk! the use of keyboards and or keyboard players that aren't hitting the mark. seriously look up any previous version of mutiny prince has done and listen 2 this version back 2 back and u can tell the difference. but my taste of funk maybe different from yours and others. i can just tell what's missing.

It's making me laugh how many of you are getting stroppy because some orgers (like myself) don't like this jam.

While I think it's pointless to dismiss something as 'crap' etc, without giving a reason, I don't see why we are not allowed to express our opinion on a forum. Regardless of whether it's a freely available Jam or not. Does this mean i'm not allowed to express my disappointment over Planet Earth, which was given away free with a newspaper?

What it boils down to is freedom of speech. if you don't like criticism, ignore it. You don't have to agree, but it doesn't give you the right to moan at people who do dislike it. We do understand it's free, but that doesn't mean we have to like it.

it's a fair point you make. I think I'm just annoyed that a loose jam session that's been given for free is being taken wayyyyyyy too seriously. If anyone bothers to read my posts you will notice the ideal combo of kiss ass 'i love p' type threads equally mixed with 'what the fuck was that' type threads!. There must always be balance!.weed

Only 2 days ago here in the UK we had the battle rounds of our run of The Voice - I swear some of the 'big voiced' women were screeching so damn hard I had to turn down/ mute/ fast forward them outta the mix just to keep watching. Some times singers can try too damn hard. This, Imho, is what Shelby is doing.

I feel sorry for Liv and Elisa - they must be mighty pissed coz not only is Shelby drowning Prince out but them too - when is their turn?!

Wendy and Lisa may not have had the best voices but they complimented prince - I have to say I'm with you - I wouldn't wanna pay big bucks to see Shelby's band with prince providing back up lol

wink I try to tell the truth about things and not to hurt Shelby's feelings but I think ur exactly right that she is trying to hard to the point that it is overkill neutral I know she is Prince's "hype" woman, but damn even Flava Flav the best hype man ever knew when to step aside, shut-up and let Chuck D do his thing. Shelby needs to learn when to tone it down. She's over shadowing Prince. Even on this short rehearsal fans can hear it so it is 3X's worse in concert. I agree with you 100%.

If I may chime in no show that Prince does, does he allow this overshadowing you've mentioned. If there are sound and lighting issues that's typically out of his hands but, who sings what and where, he's dictating who does what and when. Let's not forget that ...

Very true-so you would think a musical genius like Prince would take some advice from fans and have Shelby tone it down. She can sing, but like I said folks pay to see Prince. I know she gives Prince a break from having to sing all the time, but honestly he has fans that have been there since 78/79 and they deserve to hear only him.

Let's look at this more...Take superstars like Madonna, Janet, etc. you don't see them allowing a background singer to over shadow them. Madonna fans would be mad as hell if that happened. Hell even Michael (may he rest in peace) would allow folks to sing, but not take over the show eek
