Prince as Rudeboy

just kind of a stupid question here, when did Prince's "Rudeboy" thing stop altogether? After Purple Rain?

I've come to terms with the fact that I won't listen to anything he's done after PR. In doing so I feel like he went out at the very tippy top of awesomeness. I like him more this way.

*looks at you like wtf?*

Actually some of his best work was done after "Purple Rain".

Hate to break it to you, but the vast majority of critics and fans would say that Prince's best work was created after Purple Rain. Notably the Parade and Sign O' The Times eras.

I fixed that for you. lol

I could be wrong but this "image" was used on these 3:

LOL. Going to the live shows must be one long piss break for some fan. 80% of the songs P plays from that period!

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Yeah, I'm not all that concerned with what critics and the vast majority of fans think is best about Prince. I've heard Parade and SOTT 1000x each and yeah, they're really good. But I'm so over them. (exception: If I Was Your Girlfriend...certainly his best work ever)

For me it's gotta have studs on the shoulder and new romantic lace and lots of crazy jheri curl. I liked him dirty, and hated it when he cleaned up. Prince was best as a bit of a gutterpunk, a rudeboy!

Anybody else with me on this?

He was definitely more nervy and rebellious in those days. I'm glad though he continued to evolve musically and as a person. Many people would take issue with his choices, but he has stood by his decisions regardless of what anyone thinks. Ultimately it's his life, and he still acts like a rude boy not giving a flying f%+# what anyone else says lol

I agree. He'd look a bit ridiculous stroking the neck of his guitar while singing "Head" at the age of 53. If, however, he decided to spank the old guitar monkey again, my opinion wouldn't mean a thing to him. wink

Just for the record, a Rude Boy was slang that originally had nothing to do with Prince. People are talking about it as if it's a character like Camille, or Jamie Starr, but is there reason to think that's the case?

A Rude Boy was what you called a cheeky punk, or hoodlum and the Jamaican dancehall/soundclash culture is credited with bringing it to the UK, where it eventually got picked up on by Skinheads, but who knows. They used to sell those pins at record chain stores in the US, marketed to fans of Two Tone Ska. He probably just liked the way it sounded.

I don't think it's such an outlandish opinion. I was a hardcore SOTT devotee in the 80s, now I've revised my preference for the man. I liked him better when there wasn't so much money stinking up the music.
