There are detractors, but, yes, "Black Sweat" is top-drawer.

I love that song....I kind of thought it would be huge too...but it doesn't really go anywhere. It's just a throwback track to the Black album...it just goes to show he could spit this stuff out if he really wanted to. I'd love a whole album like that.

Inorder to get radio play you must pay for it. (Unless you are on the label that owns the radio station(s)). Plus, P probably burnt a few bridges with the "slave" period.

I agree, it should've been a monster.

Made all the while more puzzling when later that same year Justin Timberlake had a huge hit with My Love even though it was pretty much the same song and video as Black Sweat.

I think if Prince was half his age at the time it came out, it would've been a gigantic hit. I feel that way about a lot of his music since he turned 40.

I'm not one of the 'whiny ass bitches' on this site. In fact, I love the 3121 album, but 'Black Sweat' is easily my least favorite on the album. I think 'Incense and Candles', 'Love', 'The Word' and 'Beautiful, Loved and Blessed' all would have been better choices for a single. I find 'Black Sweat' bland and boring, and the hook especially is weak, so I can't see it becoming a monster hit.

Let me guess.. you think that's some hot stinking bullshit?

It's not his age that is against him..

I mean he still looks 20 years younger than his age...

and in this particular aspect the music was definitely 'top 20 calibur'

- but he burnt too many bridges to ever get his new stuff (anything post-warner brothers) on the radio and/or more importantly on high rotation via MTV etc....

in the 90's, and then in the '00's he screwed the labels that took him on (single album deals which mainly worked for Prince and not the other way round)....

3121 was easily one of his better albums of the last decade - it was a good followup to Musicology and with Universal he actually built some hype/momentum 4 the album, but then halfway into the 'hype machine' he just kinda walked away from it all....any chance of a hit song at that time was lost - and so too any chance of the 3121 CD, Perfume, Movie and whatever else he had planned (tour?) ever building on the sales they already made...he just ditched the whole idea of promotion and went out 'into the wilderness', leaving Universal and that poor perfume company to salvage what it could by itself...

since then he hasn't had an album out via any 'reputable' record company (which may not actually be a bad thing)... UK newspapers (Planet Earth and 20Ten) and Target stores (Lotusflower/MPLSound/Bria) have been his release-partners for the last 5 years!! Which is all good and fine, but they will not have any 'say' on what gets played on radio or TV...

but yeah a lot of it is down to his behaviour....major labels will put up with 'pop star' behaviour when you are making them millions...but they don't continue to pay out if you don't make profits...its a business - just like when Prince ran his own site for lotusfailure...he didn't get enough members/money - so he didn't give anything back to the site/paid-up members...I'm still waiting for my damn t-shirt!! But ol' Prince made sure he kept the money we all kicked in to help him pay his bills...never mind we got f-all in return... so after that a lot of his so-called fans are very weary of putting their money down for him up front...imagine how a major label feels when he holds his hand out... I'm not naive - they won't do him any special favours with his track record now...not unless they know that they'll get something ($) in return....

funny how Prince as a businessman is really no different to the corporate entities he fought against.... I guess that's a lesson in capitalism huh! Occupy that!!

by Prince's standards in the last 15 years, it WAS a monster hit. got a few sales, got some airplay, got video channel rotation.

that's about as good as it's going to get for him and the charts these days.

I actually just deleted this and changed my profile. I don't know why you're bringing that into the conversation, though. It's my opinion. I'm sorry it's not the same as yours.

No, I actually didn't. MPLSound just happened to be a part of the Lotusflow3r package. I prefer that 2 [or 3] disc set (mainly the lotusflow3r disc) over 'Sign'.

You're a potty mouth who likes drum machine sounds that came from the 80's and doesn't even know it. Cool.

How could anyone think a song that's nothing but a drum machine and a synth pattern called Black Sweat has anythign to do with the Black Album...amiright? Areudumb?

I think they could've done more to promote it, but the album went to #1, so it was probably diminishing returns.

Black Sweat IS a potential hit, although it wasn´t a financial success due to the lack of radio airplay and the needed promotion.

But i think Prince don´t care...

What the hell?

Dude, neither song is similar at all - My Love has keyboards that are (a) catchy as shit and (b) unheard of prior. The keyboard with the vibrato what plays the rhythm is nasty - Nate Danjahandz is responsible for that!

Black Sweat isn't a good song - it got a lot of push from Universal but still didn't have the impact they wanted because the song just stinks. It isn't catchy unless you live on the org.

I should have clarified. I agree that they arent better songs but I dont think they would have done anything (either) for the record regarding promotion , first single etc. They are boring compared to BS I feel...like Te Amo Corti..Corazon.

It's my 2nd least favourite song on the album and I can quite happily skip it, only Beautiful Loved and Blessed come lower for me. Lolita sits ever so slightly above Black Sweat, then the rest of the album is much better.

3121, Fury, The Word, Get On The Boat and The Dance are all very strong tracks. Then you have Te Amo, Incense and Candles, Love and Satisfied all sitting a little below the top ones but still towering over the rubbish of BS, BLAB and Lolita. Interesting that Black Sweats initials are BS. lol

RIP sad
