WHAT?!?!! The Rainbow Children was largely a Prince recording?

God damn, dont'cha love it when you find out something new....

For me, I had recently found out that The Rainbow Children was largely a solo recording project. This is incredible. I know P is a musical genius..but wow. To me, this album sounds close to a live recording. (I know it isn't, but is kinda there). Now that I know that all instruments (apart from where stated) are Prince has just blown my mind....incredible.

Prince.....please please please record another album that is produced and recorded as good as TRC....Please.

Well, John Blackwell played drums on 13 of the tracks, and Larry played bass on a couple of tracks, and apart from all the horns, yes, it was pretty much a Prince effort.

Accurate info on TRC and all the other albums can be found here...

and

http://www.princevault.co...iscography just click on an album for all the info you will ever need.

Hmm.

Then you must have a pirated copy cuz the liner notes tell you all that already!

Maybe he has the download from NPGMC, did that come with the art/liner notes?

That's probably why in my opinion it's the closest to a traditional "Prince" sound to me, I hear Prince 1978-1989 all over this album

It's curious: the way I see it, Prince didn't try to sound like 80's Prince in The Rainbow Children (as he did, for example, in Musicology and 3121), but the fact that he was brave and challenging again makes the album a good companion to his best work in the 80's. I think that bravery is what links this album to his 80's work.

I know right? Isn't that insane? I am floored by that! I think like Chuck D, people seem to get bored at the genius of this man.

I mean, they know he can play all of these instruments, but his ability to produce, arrange, and compose them all at once more than proves his genius. So many people ignore it, but it will stand the test of time. I have no doubt about that, regardless of some of the lyrics, musically wise it's a MASTER PIECE. It's shameful he is ignored the way he is.

But that's due to him as well I guess? lol

Nevertheless! TRC as a whole is SLAMMING!! headbang

It's Button Therapy, Baby!

I don't think he was trying to sound like "80's" Prince, I think that the music of that time is 'Purple Music' a traditional Prince style that you can hear all over Rainbow Children

I never heard 'traditional' Prince 'purple music' in those 2 albums overall.

I agree it was brave and challenging, I can follow it from beginning to end, very cohesive album

And 1 of those album u wish he would have promoted more, like ATWIAD

I'm with you here. I'll put it this way: when Prince tried to sound like 80's Prince, he made quite forgetable albums (the 2 mentioned); but when he looked ahead and dedided to challenge everything (his fans and himself included), he made an album that can be put side by side with his best 80's work, The Rainbow Children.

Totally agree, The Raimbow Children got me extremely excited. I feel that although Lotusflow3r (the disc) is the best since TRC It comes nowhere near. I really hope P gives us something as daring in 2012.

Femi Jiya is a big part of the reason The Rainbow Children 'sounds' good, he knows how to record and mix. Compare the album NEWS (without Femi Jiya) and you can hear how poorly recorded and mixed it is in comparison.

As talented as Prince is he ecels when he is surrounded by 'real' talent.... and that includes studio engineers.

I don't understand why Princevault says that, because uncredited on the booklet, Prince is the "assumed" writer of all tracks: all are copyrighted at ASCAP and given proper credit on their ACE (http://www.ascap.com/ace/index.aspx): there's no ambiguity regarding writing credits on this album! eek eek eek

It's true, his most notable work (82-87) is considered purple music. But TRC is right up there with what I feel is his most notable work ( for you and Prince).
TRC is so soulful and organic and not jut straight funk but a mixture. If u notice not many people like the album that are so mixed with different genres, they go for just straight funk.
I'm sick and tired of making plans without making up my mind, teacher teacher can't u see I just need a little time.
