how wild would it be if this new cd turned out to be some sort of universally aclaimed musical masterpiece akin to beethoven's 9th. and its coupled with a cinematic breakthrough sequel to graffiti bridge, directed by steven spielburg

...and ultimately, Prince's material has been strong, in fact, stronger than ever, which includes the recording of recent material. All you doubters, self proclaimed critics, and "haters" are simply narrow in your perspective, so I suggest you step back, say nothing, and just listen... if he decides to release it.

it could be another crap cd like 3121 or PE.

let's be real, the post WB music 1996 to 2010 hasn't been good.

1. This is your opinion

2. In my opinion 3121 isn´t crap at all

3. the music between 1996 and 2010 has some excellent stuff imo

4. didn´t u want to judge after hearing the new album (in case there is one which isn´t confirmed yet) ? U already start to give it a negative touch by saying it could be another crap cd like xyz ...

I'm not sure why you think that analog recording equipment vs digital recording equipment is going to really affect Prince's sound or creative output.

The recording process is the same. The editing is just easier on a digital system.

I was also thinking along those lines. A crap song is a crap song, regardless.

Did he use the word anymore? I am not aware of what his wording was on this. If it was "anymore" than a few weeks is a pretty short "anymore'. Does anyone know exactly what he said?

Did he say he wouldn't be recording or releasing any albums? I was pretty sure the phrase was "recording rehab" which doesn't actually have a lot to do with releasing (at least not in his world) and, if so, he's already fallen off the wagon, so to speak wink

Again, though, as has been said, the trump card here is that Prince says a lot of things which, at best, have an expiry date of approximately a week.

Not that I'm complaining, of course...

I think he said he was in recording rehab "right now". Which is not really a definite answer. But he did say something along the lines of there not being many ways of coming up with releasing new materal.

I just found a transcript from the Lopez Tonight interview, which is the one I was thinking about (he might have said it elsewhere, of course):

"I’m in recording rehab right now, I’m taking a break. The industry is going through a lot of changes right now."

Technically, he's had a break I guess, because he's been busy touring wink

Break's over!! biggrin

This is perfect Prince. He is not being specific at all. Basically there was not anything solid in the works at the time of the Lopez show. Also he made note of the "changes" and was probably figuring out the best route around those changes that would make him the most money and leave him free to decide whether to tour or not to tour. The Target thing worked for him. He got his money upfront. "I got paid, Bria got paid" he basically told Tavis. Unfortunately Prince did absolutely nothing besides make a commercial, an appearance on Ellen and one on Leno- speaking to neither, and an interview on PBS lol , to promote that 3cd collection.

Anyone that signs a contract with Prince needs to have a very good lawyer present because they will likely need to show that contract in a courtroom at some point.

Minimizing the role of digital recording equipment might influence his creative decisions though. It's just a bit too easy to start mucking with the recordings once everything is so readily available to you. You'll often end up editing things too much and adding unnecessary bells and whistles to your stuff. If he approaches the entire process like he used to in the old days it might keep him away from that aspect. I don't dislike records like MPLSound, but that one clearly show the problems Prince has had adapting to the DAW environments.

When people say "analog" these days it usually just means the role of analog equipment is increased considerably in the recording process. For example, when you're recording to tape, using analog dynamics processors and doing analog summing that already affects the overall sound a lot. For that matter, Prince's classic recordings were hardly ever "all analog", because the role of digital effects units and digital sample based instruments had such a dominant role on them. It's just about finding a mix of different elements that work together.
