It's convenient for you to keep saying "no one knows" so as to make your statments appear to have more validity than they really do and at the same time not actually do any research on your own.

There's a lot of info out there from where boots came from... stuff leaking out via specific people working at PP and other sound studios, the fact that Prince used to give tapes to girlfriends, etc... who would later pass them on. Heck, even Wendy & Lisa talked about once leaving an unreleased album in a rental car (I think it might have been Dream Factory but the interview was quite a few years ago)...

I don't know for sure anything. That's why I put "IMHO" & "Some" in my thread title. I've done more research then you know, & I even know some of the people who were doing the boots, & they always say "some" are suspect when it comes to the real origins of them. Not all, just some. That was my only point...

Well, since I'm so "clueless", clue me in to this "knowledge" you have Vitriol. You seem to know SO much....give some info to me or something.....you are officially a "T.A.B." to me until you prove me wrong.

You're a bigger idiot than you think.

Do you think I'd disclose that kind of information HERE?

That's another proof of how clueless you are.

I don't know (or care) what a T.A.B. is but I ain't 'proving' anything to you.

Why should I give you any kind of info?

For example, what bootleg do you think Prince released? Name a particular one. I guessing you must also mean studio bootleg collections, not live ones.

I'm referring to studio outtakes. Anything recorded at Paisley Park & anything WB turned down for release.

Btw, didn't Prince try to push "NYC" as a "4th generation boot" for the diehards?

right, but which bootlegs? The name of the release? For example one of the first big studio bootlegs compilations, I think it was "Crucial", came from someone lifting a cassette right out of his car which was in for repairs. Other big ones came from former employees who hung around band members and engineers and collected copies of stuff, still others came from ex-band members themselves. Others came from ex Warner's business people that owuld have copies of stuff proposed for release.

I myself was connected to a few intern types at Bernie Grundman mastering back a few years ago, so any such intern types in the 80's would have had access to anything sent in for mastering.

Which bootleg did you think Prince put out there?

I think he just means individual out-takes. A confusion in semantics here, Tittypants is using the term 'bootleg' to refer to out-takes and unreleased tracks themselves.

He may have been deliberately lax on security in some cases, but that's as far as it goes.

I can't imagine WHAT your point might be with this as it's marketing and not reality. He, also, called Crystall Ball a bootleg - which it obviously isn't and could never be.

Such as???? In your OP you mention Dream Factory, which is already explaned away, and The Black Album - which was in the hands of NUMEROUS people all across the US prior to it's cancellation and recall. Even after cancellation, copies were handed out as gifts, etc...

The "4th generation bootleg" thing was a dig at bootleg collectors. As was Crystal Ball being called a bootleg, he wanted to beat the bootleggers at their own game kind of thing, take the piss a bit.

Calling your own official release a bootleg and expecting people to seriously treat it as such would be absurd. Prince is not that stupid, he was having a laugh at our expense.

The new soundboards? Yes, he knew, and he let it happen. There will most likely be more of those (IMHO).

I'm just saying...

I take it you're referring to Montreaux.

And there's a difference between letting something happen (ie having knowledge but not being bothered to stop it) and deliberately putting something out there himself. No doubt he's done the former more than a few times, but not the latter.

I can't help but think that Prince was behind some of his own 80's bootlegs. Think about how many stories you hear about WB denying Prince of releasing certain versions of his albums, only for them to surface anyway [Dream Factory, Black Album]. I kind of think it was his way of being a rebel to WB & releasing them secretly on the low. Notice how bad the sound quality is of a lot of them. If some of these tracks were originally "Bootlegged" in good condition, why haven't the quality versions of "all" of them surfaced yet? Every boot was not "cassette-only" [We all know there were vinyl pressings too] Maybe it's because the bootleggers didn't own better copies. Prince could have easily diminished the quality of them himself on purpose. Then on top of that, think about how the packaging looks for the released version "Crystal Ball", it looks like a cheap bootleg. Prince did it on purpose, Just so it would look like any other horrible bootleg attempt [which I think was genius btw]. I think Prince loved the whole "slinging my music like crack" idea back then. It fed his ego if you think about it. It helped build up his "mysterious" persona he has. I know some of you might not buy it, but I'm not buying that EVERY boot ever released was through old friends, angry proteges or soundboard hijackers every-time.....

What are your thoughts on this?

[Edited 8/3/11 10:01am]

It's hard to believe Prince released his music for free. In fact I think the only real problem he has with boots is that he can't get paid off of them.

I still don't think Prince would release his own bootlegs. Besides "The Black Album" wasn't even made for that purpose.

Bootleggers made it happen. True fact. Not Prince.
