Your a fan when:

1. Signed up for his websites.

2. Bought all his albums.

3. Went through hell to get some bootlegs.

4. Know his discography in order.

5. Know every protege.

6. How long his tours lasted.

7. Know what B-Sides are on specific singles.

8. Inheritate a trait from him.

9. Know all of his public women relationships.

10. When you can tell what era a random Prince pic is from.

sweething

I just finished responding to another thread where my comments and another poster's comments touched on this subject.

I consider myself a real fan. I'm not really a fanatic although I can be close to fanatical at times about Prince music lol

I tend to give Prince (and most people) the benefit of doubt because I have not walked in their shoes and its hard to REALLY know from the outside looking in.

I've learned in my years that things are not always as they seem -- like all that glitters ain't gold, you know?

?

According to you, I'm definitely NOT a 'real' fan.

I don't think it's necessarily that so much as, the tone on this section of the boards is overwhelmingly negative for this to supposedly be a Prince fan forum.

I can't stand kiss-ass syncophants myself (it's a large part of my problem with the Michael Jackson online fan community), but the Prince fan community is the other extreme, which is equally as disgusting.

I don't see 'negativity', all i see is different viewpoints of an artist we all admire.

I would be very bored of this site if all we did was praise whatever he did.

I've been into Prince's music since 1986, and have seen him a decent amount of times at main shows and after shows. Inspite of that, I have no qualms whatsoever in being critical of him should i feel that way.

But, according to a lot of people of thse fan sites, I can't be a fan if i dare be critical.

People are entitled to criticize what or who they want to.

To even think that someone can only be a "real fan" if they do not complain is a very narrow minded and worrying attitude, it's not healthy and it's not realistic.

And don't even think about saying that people complain about "everything" because if you actually pay attention you will find that that too is untrue and an unrealistic comment.

Good day.

I agree with what you say, but surely the thing to do would be to ignore such threads/comments, instead of starting a thread whinning about the matter and making it sound like one cannot be a true fan if one dares to criticize.

Agree, people should voice their opinion and not copy each other. But if they truly think his recent shows suck, maybe they should see other artists' shows.

Agree!

There's a huge difference between a groupie and a fan(lover)... and then you have the fanatics

I'm on here every day on habit, just like I earlier was on an outkast board, and has been on several other music boards. But Prince is just the one artist that has the most treasures and diverse material for me to be curious for a life time. Of course we have Miles Davis and different jazz acts. But Prince has an entier package of enjoyable entertainment.

I consider myself a fan, but doesn't have all albums. My father has almost every album except a few internet releases, while I have collected more of the b-sides and vinyl releases, as well as bootleg. That must make me a fan.

But of course I believe I have a life outside of this world too lol and make my own music. Can't spend my life just following his footsteps wherever he goes. You wont get anywere if you do that.

Why do you care about other people's opinions? If you're lucky enough to go to a show, and you enjoyed it, then that's what matters.

It's not because you criticise negatively sometimes that you aren't a "real" fan..

What does "real" mean anyway?

Is it a someone who's been following Prince since he has started in the music industry whether he's been Up the charts or not?

Is it someone who follows whatever he does and glorifies whatever he says ?

Is it someone who only looks out for "hits" from his?

I wonder..

thankyou! i barely like anything he's done since '96, i think his live shows are stale and lazy and he's an egocentric arsehole, so some would say i'm a "hater". but on the other hand, i have 58 ticket stubs from '88-'98 and i play his music virtually every day. i think that qualifies me as a "fan"! smile i mean, if people insist on putting "everybody loves me" appreciation threads up, or "which do u prefer? sign o the times or planet earth?" then what do these numptys expect to hear?

Yeah the ones who always talk like "Oh I miss the old Prince, he's not the same person anymore, everything he puts out these days is nothing but shit" -_- Ugh. But the thing is most of them are obsessed enough to at least sit in front of a computer and spend hours just to talk shit about Prince on this website. DAILY!!! I guess they're beyond obsessed that they just can't let it go...So in a way, they're real fans . They just can't admit or don't realize how obsessed they are.

A question to the OP: What is that thing called 'Real Fans'?

Just someone who doesn't complain, a sycophant, an ass-licker?

People without opinions and without a load of experiences to actually back those opinions?

Define, please...

They're are a lot of shit talking about people who critize Prince. They have the right to do it, at the end of the day, their a Prince fan. Get over it. I'm pretty sure everyone critized Rave and "Family Name", "The Arms Of Orion", "Wedding Feast" and 'Poom Poom". So shut up.

With that said, I have not complained about anything Prince has done since I've been a fan.
