Best version of "The Ride"

So I went out to one of the casinos here in Vegas tonight and I was wearing a Prince shirt and a guy at the table asked me if I was Prince fan. I'm used to that question but the other person is usually one of the casual fans so I just said that I was more than just an average fan and asked him if he was and it turned out the guy was a pretty decent fan. He tells me is favorite song is from Prince at the Alladin and it was "The Ride." I was like, "no way!" I never hear anyone mention that song outside of The Org. I told him what I thought of that dvd and the chop job Prince did to it and that there are so many other better versions of "The Ride."

The first one that cones to mine is from that concert where he performed "Poor Goo." Was that from Ryde Devine? Can anyone name any other concerts where Prince performs this better than that concert? It was so cool to actually meet another Prince fan outside of the normal places. So I'm going to hook him up because he also thinks that Prince is such an underrated guitartist The guy was a Gemini and born in '58 plus he looked just like Takumi (Prince's former guitar tech). So can someone think of another great version of "The Ride"?

Nice little story smile

I don't know about "the best" version,

but I really like "The Ride" on the 3CD bootleg:

The Dawn.

THE RIDE (8:44) – mix created using the version on ‘Crystal Ball’ and the unreleased version from ‘The Undertaker’ album, intro drums cleaned up a bit and start of song now extended by a couple of bars using loop of the beat with odd keyboard and guitar parts from the later breakdown section spun in.

In case you want the whole tracklist just search here for the Dawn. wink

There are countless great live versions of this track.
One of my favorites is from "The Sacrafice Of Victor" video.
The audio of this gig is circulating on 4DaFunk's release of the same name.

the gig where he did poor goo and undertaker that you are probably thinking of is from the sacrifice of victor vhs/laser disc from bagueleys warehouse london, the last afterparty as "prince" before he changed his name into an unpronouncable scribble on 08/09/93

the other vhs/laserdisc with both tracks is the undertaker, a rehearsal recorded at paisley park on 1406/93

the version on crystal ball is an overdubbed version or the sacrifice of victor track

the best version of the track i've ever heard (and i've heard a LOT) is from the glasgow garage aftershow, but some other good versions in good quality are miami 07/06/94, london emporium 22/03/95, monte carlo 04/05/94, paisley park 13/02/94 (from the beautiful experience tv special), paris bataclan 06/05/94, and the paris soundcheck for the canal+ tv studio on 06/05/94

the definitive version for me is on the welcome to the beautiful experience bootleg. the bagley's warehouse aftershow (which i was at, and was terrible) is decent too. apart from those 2 every other version i've heard i hate.

don't play me...i'm over 30 and i DO smoke weed....

I was at Bagley's Warehouse too... could've been a great gig if the sound was sorted and we weren't all crammed in like sardines smile

i know, i remember the sweat literally dripping off the ceiling. he took ages to come on too. i reckon prince wanted to make money off it as the tickets were so easy to get hold of.

I've never heard a version of this song that I didn't love! It's always been a totally killer track.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Thanks everyone! It was def the Undertaker version that I was think of. I'll do a search o my collection and see if I have "The Dawn" or need to get it. It was just a cool night running into another fan and not just of the Purple Rain era. Thank You again!

My favorite has always been the one on the Welcome 2 The Beautiful Experience bootleg, from Paisley Park 13/02/94. The rest of the bootleg is ok, but that song really stands out!

I like the London warehouse one the best because of the way he sings it. Subtle differences but I like it.

What about the live version from the "Love 4 One Another" TV special ?

Long time since I have watched it..... can't exactly remember but if I remember right it's great.

It is great yes, it makes it even better in the fact that he plays his black symbol guitar which you don't often see on tv.
