The Dawn 4.0

Is there anything out there that compares to this 3 cd set? In terms of scope, quality, and ambition, this thing is the absolute best. Does anyone know if whoever put this together has done anything else? TJB/NPG Records (I'm talking about the cds, not the dvds, by the way)

I must agree the LOVE for this set.

In reference to your question of comparable set, I'd like to throw in the 18th July Config of Dream Factory(pimpsandich) - I cannot explain the way this album make me feel. It just flows indeed like a Dream

Just blows my mind thinking about this being release back in the day...oh well. Thankfully we have it in any format.

Not many boots out there can compare to this amazing set. I believe you can thank the org's own BorisFishpaw for painstakingly assembling this phenomenal tour through what is probably the second best era (93-95) of P's career (some might believe it's the best era of his career). Don't know what P had in mind for a possible configuration of The Dawn at that point, but this is absolutely killer. This is probably my favorite boot discovery of the last decade.

It is a great set.

As far as era-specific studio compilations go, I'd recommend anything by SaTim/T, Pimpsandwich/Digital Funk Bitch. Box O Chocolates (FBG), Graffiti Bridge 2009 (Alpha1999) and All Exodus (Rudedog) are funkstravaganzas too. I'm sure that I'm forgetting a bunch.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

^ Are GB 2009 and All Exodus interesting to own if u already own The Work 2.0 (in terms of content or quality)?

4 the record, and just because the mistake has been done before by many, The Dawn 4.0, as great as it is to listen to, isn't supposed to reflect any actual 1994 project by Prince (Boris himself admitted it).

Hats off to Boris! Vitriol, are the differences between 4.0 and 4.1 enough to warrant tracking it down?

Also, the pimpsandwich Dream Factory is fantastic. Box O' Chocolates is great in terms of sound quality. I'm not a fan of All Exodus; The new Exodus Has Begun release blows it away (apples and oranges though, I know).

Still, in terms of reimagined albums, The Dawn 4.0 is hands down the best.

I only have 4.1, I don't know the differences, but i'm sure they are minimal.

However, is the most up to date version of anything not usually the one to have?

wink

I never had The dawn 4.0.

I guess that one was never put in circulation. I had version 3.1 and what was ultimately put out by Boris as definitive version was 4.1.

Indeed it is. I don't usually like material that has been tampered with unless it has been commissioned or endorsed by the artist themselves.

But this is so well done with the editing and material being of such a high quality that it almost sounds like it could be an official release.

I haven't compared the tracks side-by-side to Work It, but the spit-polish on GB 2009 as well as the flow make for a really enjoyable listen. All Exodus is great to have the outtake session work all in one compilation.

this is what the notes say about it:

BILLY JACK BITCH (8:26) – new mix using the album version from 'The Gold Experience', the unreleased ‘full length’ version (The Work), the Hornheads' 'New Dell Inn' and 'Bitch' sample from Fishbone's 'Lyin' Ass Bitch'. drum loop lifted from Graham Central Station's 'Love 4 1another' (which was lifted from 'Billy Jack Bitch' in the first place anyway), had to do this as no clean loop can be lifted from 'Billy Jack Bitch' itself

i think the mix freakin rocks!

Thanks 4 the info and opinion wink

What I'd LOVE 2 c end-up on a bootleg (or anywhere online) is the cassette (and possibly vinyl?) version of Joy In Repetition, with the different ending: seems it doens't exist in digital 4mat and it's a pity sad
