well..... I wouldn't say that prince was ever a "devil-worshipper" per se. Didn't see any pentagrams, goat's heads, or upside down crosses anywhere. However, in the early years, when the music was still awesome, there was plenty of wild, hedonistic, sexual things going on all over the place, one solid example is the Lisa/Jill Jones thing in the 1999 video, hanging all over each other and looking all hot and lusty. The next year it was "Wendy, is the water warm enough?" All the way through the Gett Off vid with the Caligula orgy thing going on. It may have peaked with Prince getting fake butt-humped by the Game Boyz, I'm not sure (never want to see that gif again, thank you!)

Just because he talked a lot about God during the same period doesn't mean he was doing anything good for Christianity. Like I said, the music was fantastic, but between prince and madonna, I feel they did incredible damage to the soul of american youth in the 80s. And I think Prince has spent the last 15 years or so trying to undo the damage. Unfortunately, as a Jehovah's Witness he's still distorting the Word of God to this day, only now it's much sneakier and without the obvious red flags (i.e., assless pants)

Actually it had some kind of logic back then, the last heritage of the hippie ideology: "fight bigotry, free your mind and body", etc., at the time it still meant something to be a rebel and to want the world to change. Then suddenly things evolved but no one could expect what happened in the next 20 years, when sex suddenly became the must in western societies, a leisure amongst other, but the best leiseure nonetheless, with people fucking each other as if they were mere products (fast food) and raving about how cool they are because they fuck all around.

Today you're a scandalous rebel if u talk about having sex only when u're in love or the possible psychological damages of a soulless sexual life... Who'd have thought that back in 1984?

I'll tell you who..... The church people!

I'd love to know if the hippies are happy, now that they are old, and they got what they thought the world needed when they were young.

If Prince isn't the devil, I will be deeply disappointed. neutral

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

When I saw the thread title I immediately said "DAMN I missed the new episode of South Park?!?"

But I do remember that. Back in the 80s Christian church ladies would tell you everything was Satanic except them. If you were a fundamentalist you were taught that Catholicism was Satanic.

I don't think the phenomenon i'm describing is what the hippies (or Prince) had in mind. The hippie ideal, naive as it is, has its beauty: spiritually pure people having an open sexuality full of spirituality. This is quite different from what we're seeing now, i.e. sex as a mere leisure deprived of spirituality, and as a way of creating a new social hierarchy (read writer Michel Houellebecq to understand what i'm talking 'bout) and human beings becoming mere "products".

I used to think like Prince and the hippies when i was 20, then i realized how inhuman things had become, and wrote this once: "the sexual revolution is like communism: written on paper it seems a wonderful thing, but in real life it ends-up being a disaster".

I think Prince and Madonna were naive, and as you stated, they both grew-up.
