Lol, what do you think of P's portrayal of women?.

Ladies, Tis' a strange world in purple land and I hope we see the day that perhaps more normal ladies like Shelby / Rosie are the rule and not the exception. What do think, just another rocker lucky enough to live out his fantasies with some beauties or a dinosaur out of touch with women today.

Serioulsy you do have to laugh how he shows what women are like in his world. Generally they all fit the following criteria both in video AND sometimes in real life!!:

1] good looking / made up to the nines

2] dresssed perfectly

so far so good and nothing too weird ...but then...

3] a lack of brains - they do come across [following his scripts] as totally devoid of intelligence [check out say the undertaker video...hell just check out almost all of his videos / side projects!!]

4] Stepford wives strikes again!!- why do they speak with that strange / drugged up drowsy style and are always servile, dress like him / by him!

5] They are sold to us as some major new talent - mega lol!! - we're just the well that he always leads these ladies to drink from!

Over to you.

As you suggest with the phrase "Generally they all fit the following criteria," the matter seems more complicated than this. I think it's interesting that *no one* has commented on your post, given that the people here surely hold strong and conflicting views on this matter.

lol, my ego can take it!. I too was surprised though that noone is bothered about the fact that he [IMHO] really is old school when it comes to the ladies and how he deals with them. I'll never forget being at the opening of the Campden NPG store [London] back in 95'. iT was just after the autograph signing session and P was nowhere to be seen but called Mayte on the mobile - he was clearly not happy with something and to see the look of fear on her face was truly awful.

Anyways, maybe I should start a thread on P splitting his pants on stage--oh wait that's been done already.lol

There is actually a reoccurring theme in is albums--I call the it "Lolita"

You'll constantly find female characters who are

1) Loose

2) balancing him with another man--or trying to break him up from his current lover

3) Cheating (if attached to him)

Many of the newer versions of these types of songs, actually have him

preaching to this female character, schooling her on the rules of propper

monogamy.

Even female characters who are not elevated to "Lolita" status

require lots of attention or else (in Prince's mind) they will obviously

stray. Take for example "Do it Like She like it" from Emancipation.

Prince's advise is that you need to sexually satisfy your woman,

because the obvious outcome to not doing so is that she will

cheat on you.

Even when he goes from a comic book approach (Darling Nikki,

Lolita, I Hate U, etc.), he throws in that theme when he's getting

sentimental (I love U but I don't trust U anymore).

Hell, even Ingrid Chavez who is obviously and angel in Graffiti Bridge

can't help but get drunk and lured by Morris Day's obvious overbrimming

charm.

I don't think these things post-millenium are intentional at all. I don't think Prince hates

women, nor does he want to portray them in a certain light.

I just think that he's just pumping out songs with little thought these days.

You're a real fucker. You act like you own this place--ParanoidAndroid <-- about as witty as this princess gets! lol
I hope everyone pays more attention to Sags posts--sweething mushy

Prince is no different then any other person (male or female) and that he like what he likes. We've seen in UTCM what he thinks of women that don't fit the criteria (remember his reaction to the womanon the pier?). I'm pretty sure that he has a say in who appears in his videos and it's quite normal the "lead/starring" positions will go to the young lady who most represents his idea of The One.

This thread made me think of L.L. Cool J's video "Around the Way Girl". Remember when he was at the cast call and he was complaining about how the type of females being seen weren't what he wanted. He wanted "around the way filet and they gave him stuck-up tuna" lol lol lol

How about Sexy M/F? Where does that fit in your criteria? When I have watched that video, I just cringe when, at the beginning, he commands: "You, you, and you. Get in the car!"

I believe Prince adores women, he is not (always) putting them down.

he can be so romantic in lyrics.

un-happy songs contains the most beautiful lyrics, like sometimes when the women are hurting him, like in the sad and un-happy Nothing Compares 2 U.

Prince has written a lot of un-happy songs, some of them a little bitter too, like Strange Relationship.

Correct me if I'm wrong....... wink

Wasn't Princes dad a womanizer? (not that that should be an excuse..)

I think that Prince likes to "f*ck" the type of women you described, but he has longterm and real relationships with some solid, talented females (Wendy, Lisa, Sheila E, Chaka Kahn, ..) How does he treat men in his life? I think Prince's circle of close friends (which does include women) is very small and exclusive.

I wouldn't want to be a Prince lady because I think my life would be totally wrecked afterwards. It would be hard to come back to reality after being in "Princeland" and thats what it is. Interviews with his past lovers always mention "magical" and "dream like"... I've been infatuated with some "womanizing assholes" before when I was young (might be why Prince is usually with younger woman). But, after I came out of the fog (thank GOD!) I couldn't believe the stuff I had put up with! I can't even explain why, other than it was infatuation. But, I think that ultimately men don't respect infatuation, it feels good at the time because you have someone worshipping you, but you don't respect it. Might be why Prince runs through so many ladies...

The woman who played on stage with Prince at the recent show I saw in Oakland seemed to me people who Prince respected. He's always had strong woman in his band. As an 11 year old, Wendy and Lisa were my idols! I'm sure he has disrespected them and I can look for that thread on the org, but from first glance, when I saw Wendy and Lisa on the poster with Prince, as a young girl, that was pretty awesome. Because at the time, it was like Billy Idol and The Cure and other DUDES...Prince shared his spot light with women, out lesbians at that!

Prince is complex, I think to be one of his lovers would be so painful because it's a fantasy, not reality, and women can be delusional and Prince is fucking Prince....so, he can and he does, you know? But, I don't think that it is beyond Prince's capacity to be respectful and genuine with a female.

QuasarOfRock

He does have outdated ideas about women.

'1+1+1=3' is a good example.

He is a 53 year old midwestern male, though, so that has to have influenced his thinking in some ways.

He fooled us by appearing to be so 'wild' or 'open minded' earlier in his career, but he's really stodgy, uptight, and conservative.

Despite his own penchant for crossdressing, I'm sure he'd frown on it from any other male.

Also, he is a control freak, so any woman that's much beyond an inflatable doll is a problem for him.

I love you, Prince, but you remind me of my grandad sometimes. (Though you look more like my grandma.)

Sorry, it was just weird to me that you said 'normal women like so and so' in one breath and then mentioned 'beautiful women' in the other like the two are mutually exclusive.

And - not all beautiful women are stupid, mindless and talentless pushovers. Also, just because a woman is average or unattractive, doesn't automatically mean she has the brain of a rocket scientist and the depth of Khalil Gibran.

Also, we really don't know the women that have been seen publically with Prince anyways in order to say whether they were intelligent or not, had depth or not, etc - or even, whether they were passive or not. Seeing someone out on the street or on a red carpet or making a press appearance, tells you nothing about how that person really is in their relationships with others, and how they think and what they feel, and what they're like in general....

Just because you saw examples of that in Prince's movies and work, doesn't mean those women are that way in real life or those are his real experiences with women.

"I don't think you'd do well in captivity." - random person's comment to me the other day

I like this post cool Very, very realistic talking and experience described

Plus, to give my anser to ur second question, I think that men, only of those who are musicians, get Prince's attention, let alone respect. And prolly takes 100x as longer than women to get personal. Only to my knowledge Larry Graham was the only one I think had that personal bond with Prince. Who knows, he was just prolly used too to get that spiritual guidance other than personal companionship. But this thread is about the women in life, so let me stop there

I read an interview (don't remember where) with Prince in which he was asked what he thought of criticisms of Purple Rain according to which it was sexist. His response was (this is a pretty close paraphrase, I think) "I wasn't trying to hurt anyone." I'm sure he continued by saying something like "I didn't write it" (!)

Not sure all of what u said is right r creditable (Refferring to Prince) but alot of what u said in general terms r true. When i was young (well im still kinda young 30) older men found me alluring, but i thinks its bcuz they had some control over me, r they felt they did atleast. Your young you go into things blind. and i believe Prince is very complexed, and that after being with someone so unique, and intriguing, it would be hard 2 move (maybe strange is better a word) you would see and know him from a different stand point, it could be an ugly r nice ordeal.

On another note, im not intrested on what Prince, thinks of women. He's not a woman, his interpretation will never reveal all that is known of a woman, r the many different pains and beauty of being a woman. He's done fairly well musically describing women(i feel ive met a few of these ladies in his lyrics) but a potrayal is still an act.

But i respect Prince as a person, so much that being his his women would neva work shake

a good friend i'd heart that

"How Can I Stand To..Stay Where I Am? Poor Butterfly Who..Dont Understand." P

How about Sexy M/F? Where does that fit in your criteria? When I have watched that video, I just cringe when, at the beginning, he commands: "You, you, and you. Get in the car!"

Well, there's all sorts of strangeness going on with that video actually.

The mic-gun is a misogynist symbol if I ever saw one--and contrasted against his high heels, permed hair, and very fem threads, I'd say not all together convincing.

I remember when someone posted a question on L41A.com back when they were still trying to brainwash folks, about why he used such a violent symbol. I wish I still had the response they gave... it was hilarious... Something along the lines of "the words of peace that come forth from the mic nullify it's destructive power." or something really really really strange and bullshittery.

It was a mixed blessing though back then. Because Prince started to incorporate more symbols of black female beauty where he had never done so prominently before. I was shocked and somewhat appalled at the depiction of two black men going neck-to-neck against each other in UTCM for a rich white woman (he would repeat this patter in GB as well), and the fact that there were no black women portrayed as sex symbols in his earlier works. They were always white. Hell, in UTCM, the one time a black woman appears, she looks like Mrs. Jefferson with a Jamaican accent and Christopher Tracey runs from her absolutely horrified.

At least with the increased hip hop craziness and the slight misogynistic overtones of incorporating such a male dominated machismo pop art form into his music, there was the overall dichotomy of his portrayal of black women in a more positive, sexual light.a

Yes, and I was disappointed to see that it showed up in his exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in part because it seems not to typify or be characteristic of his persona. I do think there is a sexist and misogynistic dimension to many of his lyrics and imagery, but the mic-gun doesn't capture it.

Let me add that, notwithstanding what I wrote above, I think the mic-gun is repugnant. I cannot relate to what I see as a very-American fascination with guns.

(Though you look more like my grandma.)

falloff i agree he comes off as old fashioned, his religion promotes that women are subservant, which is hugely convenient as i think this has always been his thing

what i actually love about prince is that he is so transparent when it comes to women.. he cracks me up. of course he likes what he likes, but most of all there is no bullshit & like most blokes (if they're honest) it's all about tits & arse, prince makes no secret about that.. guys are programmed like that.

& this is where it starts & ends 4 prince..

the woman is purely a sexual object to fulfil his personal fantasies, he genuinely respects the woman because she can do this

he probably is in love with love, in love with the chase, the flirting, DMSR.. i believe he will be amazing during this point in his relationships, hence the inspiration, great love songs & beautiful passion filled lyrics,

then when he's totally spent & he's exhausted the honeymoon period it all goes to pot.

as far as marriage goes, i have wondered if he married mayte because she was pregnant.. is this possible?

& only married the other one at an attempt to doing what his religion expected of him.

he gets very bored, he'll never change

I think that you may have "hit the nail on the head" with that comment.

Hell, in UTCM, the one time a black woman appears, she looks like Mrs. Jefferson with a Jamaican accent and Christopher Tracey runs from her absolutely horrified.

Actually, there is the scene in the beginning when he buys flowers for a beautiful older black woman and there are a couple of "posh" black woman at Mary's party, and some black couples in the piano bar (but, they don't have any interaction with Prince).

I'm not disagreeing with your post, Im just adding some details... smile because, yes, he does run horrified from that one black lady...

The woman he bought flowers for in the second scene wasn't old at all, she looked about his age. And before he left her, he kissed her hand. The black woman toward the middle of the movie who asked him when they could "get together again" was significantly older. I think he ran from her because:

a) his gigolo past caught up to him in a way he didn't expect,

b) he wasn't in the mood to "get together" with anyone but Mary

c) he might have forgotten he had ever gotten together with her because she didn't...tickle his fancy, to put it lightly and

d) the woman was downright old.

I don't think he ran away from her because she was black. He got with a lot of white woman in UTCM but they were in France. Had the movie been set in India he would've gotten with Indian women, and so on and so forth.

time flies.
