Prince's most underrated and overrated album

Just pick one smile And just because i think an album is overrated doesnt mean i dont think its good, it means it isnt quite as brilliant as some people IMO make it out to be

SOTT is the most overrated. Great album but still OR.

Most UR album is ATWIAD. To me, Temptation is the greatest Prince song ever (minus the last few minutes).

I don't think Controversy is even close to being the most underrated album

And the Black album in it's time period was not over rated. If that album had it's own era it would have been hot 1988

I'm just speaking about fans here, as I think all Prince albums are underrated by the public.

Underrated:

Overrated (I will get stoned for this one...):

I know... It's all good and stuff, but it has such an uneven feel to it I hardly ever listen to it. I don't consider it one of Prince's gems, yet most people here do. So yeah...

I almost picked these two as well. What made me pick the ones I did is that the fans seem to love Come and the public/critics seem to not hold ATWAID in high regard.

[Edited 2/10/11 9:31am]

I have this feeling with Come that people mostly think of what could have been done better ("The old version of Come was better", "Orgasm shouldn't be up there", etc etc.) rather than how great the album really is as a whole. Not a single album by Prince is perfect, yet Come is usually getting "bullied" for it. I was thinking about posting a show-your-love thread for Come, but those threads usually turn out to be really lame so I didn't. Still think it's underrated though.

And I guess we're on the same page with ATWIAD then, because I was just speaking about the fans and not about the general public or the critics. If I was, I'd put another one.

Overrated: Dirty Mind

Why: I just find the demo-production style weak, and the songwriting just doesn't hit that sweet spot for me like his other great albums from this period do. It's among my least-listened to Prince albums.

Underrated: Batman

Why: Great production, songs that run the gamut from moody and hardhitting to spritely, catchy and fun. It's tight and economical, and pretty much every song offers something worth listening for. "Vicki Waiting" is easily one of my fave tunes.

An album's worth of filler! Proof that not everything Prince did in the 80's was perfect.

Some absolutely fantastic tracks on this disc. It also flows better than most of his discs. It's a tight set, all the way around!

Interesting...I've would've flipped these same albums. Aside from Papa, Letitgo and Dark, there's nothing else on 'Come' that makes me want to listen to it. Add to that the remix of Space(Universal Love...) and the alternate version of 'Come' are much better than their album counterparts IMO.

As for 'Around the World In A Day'...wow, ATWIAD is so haunting and hypnotic ... and so heart felt. It's not a perfect album, but it's not trying to be. After the huge success of Purple Rain, it was a declaration to his real fans that ART trumps sales, that he would never bow to mass appeal or the rules of the game, that the magic of Purple Rain wasn't manufactured in a lab. He could have waited 3 or 4 yrs before making another album - and solidified his place in rock n roll history- sold another ten million units. But instead, he put out an album one year later completely different than Purple Rain. Challlenging, introspective, coy, dark, subversive in some ways, a big "FU" to the industry, and all Prince.

"Oh silly man...you have to want her for the right reasons."

"I do..."

"You don't... Now die!"

"Nooooooooo nooo noooooo! ....Shheee kott !"

You gotta love it !!!

bow Finally someone that sees my point! No one ever talks about how great Temptation is. People either bash the whole album or talk about a few songs, no mention anywhere of this sweet piece and reminent of Purple Rain/1999 material.

Yes, at 19, I finally saw the Revolution, a legendary band. And I talked to Wendy!!! biggrin In addition to seeing Prince, I have now lived life. Thank you Purple People!!

OVERRATED:

LOVESEXY - after good Sign O The Times, this album is a little bit boring

AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY - the same as above,

Around the World in a Day set a precedent for piecemeal, slapped-together albums that lacked consistency.

Planet Earth is one. Graffiti Bridge is (an exceptionally well-executed) one. There's others, too. The Black Album is that way. I feel it's not that those albums lack good songs but that the coherence isn't there. The albums feel like greatest hits compilations almost. They just happened to be the best tracks that were being worked on at the time as opposed to albums like Parade where all the songs sounded like they were written for that album.

That's pretty much what I've been thinking for a while. I completely agree with you.

I commented about ATWIAD being an "uneven" album in my previous post, but that doesn't really have anything to do with the quality of the individual songs. I actually quite like most of the songs on it and Raspberry Beret is still among my favourite hits. But one of the things I enjoy in Prince's albums is that he usually sets a certain theme for an album and stays within it. Most of the time, he's even consistent with the quality of the songs. The entire album is either brilliant, mediocre or utter crap. The albums that feel sort of "weird" to me are the ones that is mixing good with bad songs or failing to find a theme. That goes for the albums you mentioned and I'd like to add Diamonds & Pearls as well. That doesn't really say anything about the songs that are on it, but it does say something about how much I'd enjoy an album, how often I'd listen to it and whether I think people overrate it or not.

You mean you're gonna actually hear what we play tonight? You're not gonna make up the notes in your mind?

Underrated: Come.

Although I'd say Lotusflower is widely underrated as well.

Overrated: The Black Album.

It's mostly just a collection of throwaways. Some good stuff, but it hardly justifies the praise that's been heaped on it over the years.

you realize that a couple of songs is about 25% of one of his shortest albums? How can you make that the greatest and rawest album ever? It's close to being an EP. Other than that, I fully agree. It's one of his best and least polished albums smile
