i think his best videos were during the 'diamonds and pearls' era.. in terms of being well done and really doing the songs justice and helping the songs sell.
i gotta say, there is something about the raspberry beret video that is so brilliant to me. the mix of the live and animated stuff just looks so thoughtful and intricate.
kiss is also great because it just makes a huge impression and leaves people with a lasting image to remember.. prince / leather / greased back hair / chick with the veil
LRC for the breakdance part and the splits.. unforgettable.

but for as much as i worship prince, and for as much as he a visual innovator, to me , his videos kind of suck.....alphabet st is the epitome of what prince started to do incorrectly... too much control, not enough outside help... it looks like a little kid made it..
and the betcha by golly wow / holy river / come on videos .. ugh......!

Not sure why people think that they make great directors, etc. if they have a lot of space and a video camera. I think music video department is one area where Prince should've really taken a step back and let people who know what they hell they're doing actually do the work. He's a fantastic musician and performer, but visually he's not all that great. He might've had some vaguelly good ideas for his videos, but it takes a village to make somebody's dream a reality. My verdict - hire a creative director and somebody who knows how to hold a camera. Gett Off would probably be my best pick, but that's a giant stretch. | |
