What Do You Think Of Prince's Cover Of Red House

A.K.A Purple House & Whole Lotta Love?

I think there two great covers and show his skills on guitar to a great length i would love to hear him do more Hendrix & Zeppelin covers

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

All music is shit music and no music is real- gunsnhalen

i love purple house

but i don't love it as much as red house... as much as I love prince's guitar playing, I love jimi's more... but i do love prince's music more than jimi's

I like "Purple House", I guess...

Hendrix is my favorite artist, so I still like "Red House" better.

I'd love to hear Prince do versions of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", Voodoo Child, and "Voodoo Chile Blues", tho. nod

It's good but like most of Prince's attempts at rock music it sounds a little too clean and sterile for my tastes. I think the closest Prince came to achieving a great rock sound was side one of Chaos and Disorder.

me too... I'd love to hear those... but I must say, Hearing Prince copy Jimi would not be as good as hearing prince playing his own thought up leads. just my opinion

he doesn't copy jimi's leads too much in purple house... do you think?

It's a very minor complaint but I never liked that he changed the end from "sister" to "somebody." I don't know if the whole JW thing had something to do with that or not but it seemed kind of silly.

I was just about to type this when I looked down... lol

And I do think Prince tried to give "Purple House" his own spin. nod

I love the Lotusflow3r album but like "Purple House" it sounds very clean and sterile. I would like to hear some rock music from Prince that sounds more like Exile On Main Street and less like Hysteria.

I love it. I wish he do a cover album of Jimi's material. I think a double album would be cool.

I like Prince's attempts at blues. He don't get it too blue, though, it's like he always puts a purple spin on it. That might be what you are refferring to as clean and sterile.

If I had a Harem is great, Beggin Woman Blues is great. And both are more tongue-in-cheek than blue.

nod

I like his blues, too. His purples, etc. I'm not a fan of If I Had A Harem (the studio version is what I know better and that is not too bluesy), but I like everything else he's done in blues. He did a lot of blues when he was doing those covers in the early to mid 90s. (While they might not really be blues songs, he did add blues inflection to songs like "Mary Don't You Weep" and "Honky Tonk Woman" etc)

Yeah, check out the boot The Park II (or really the whole The Park set). The Park II happens to be my personal favorite of the set, but they are all great recordings.

Prince actually covered Voodoo Child at least once, 1995 09 16 The Park vol II so the same concert as Honky Tonk Woman (although he changed it to Honky Tonk Women)

Never heard The Undertaker?

I've heard it and I maintain that side one of Chaos and Disorder has a better rock sound than The Undertaker. razz

When I say "rock sound" I'm not just talking about the guitar. The bass and especially the drums are just as important and for me when Prince does rock music the drums and bass often are not aggressive enough. Most of the time it seems like Prince just gets a nice groove going behind him and plays lots of guitar over it. I would love it if he got a great rock drummer and really tried to do a 10-12 track rock album. Obviously John Bonham is not available but that's the type of drumming I would like to hear.

I would also like to see him ditch the keyboards for this imaginary rock album but a couple of tracks with acoustic piano would be ok. Think vintage Jerry Lee Lewis type piano.

He should do the Crossroads Festival and do a full on blues set and borrow Dennis Chambers to play the drums (plus it's coincidence that Dennis also had an album called "Planet Earth").

I only know the live version of If I Had a Harem, and that is the blues. That's how I like my blues (except for Led Zeppelin and Hendrix).

Maybe Your Baby - that's another great one!
