While we are on the subject of Lovesexy, it always annoyed the heck out of me that the CD I bought has the entire album as a continuous sequence single track.

Are the majority of copies like this, or is the single track version very limited with most of the CD's sold as nine separate tracks? And has any other artist done something similar?

Same! After cassettes and records were phased out, i started replacing my Prince collection on cd. The first copy of lovesexy played individually, a housefire in 1995 took over half of my collection.

I slowly began the task of repurchasing my "lost albums" & only got around 2 replacing Lovesexy around 18 mnths ago( yeah i know i was really slow but I saved my tapes & 2 records so I could still listen 2 them) & was really annoyed that it plays in continuous sequence, I was like WTF! but then i read it on the cd under the Tracklist.

I'm am currently looking 4 a copy that doesn't play like that or a way of splitting them so I can at least burn it . Does anyone know how 2 do this at all, PLEEEEEEEZ!

Buy a European copy, our Lovesexy has had seperate tracks for years.

When Lovesexy was first released, my cd copy was all the one track, but somewhere along the line a tracked copy was released. It's been available for a long time now.

The single track version is not a limited edition.

Anna Stesia is about Prince overreacting on an alleged XTC-trip... lol

Any way i alway took it like this:

Prince being in a dance club in the evening, feeling lonely, detached, depressed. Him asking the listener the rethoric question: "Have you ever been so lonely that you would take any boy of girl?"

It was written Ingrid Chavez (who was with him) offered him an XTC-pill that night, and she did get the pill from Anthony Kiedis. I don't lknow how much of that is true, but to me Prince is describing what sounds like a bad trip.

Then you have him describing the events after taking 'the pill': gregory (brooks) looking like a ghost, because of the drugs changing his visual perception... a girl seducing him there, like he can't resist... XTC working on his sexual urges.

Anna Stesia has the following meaning in this song i think:

Anesthesia = the desire to feel numbed down, either by using drugs and/or having anonymous sex (without 'real love'). So it could both relate to drugs or to a woman. So in the song he praises Anne Stesia, like some 'false god' and then....

Next part: Prince comes to realise during that evening that this is not the the right way to handle with his state of mind. He feels he has sinned towards God by acting like this, and not seeing that 'Love is the masterplan' and 'god is love'.

I don't understand what u don't understand, the lyrics r quite self-explainatory.

I just always wondered why Gregory (Brooks i guess?) does look like a ghost.

I always wonder about that too... maybe he got the news that he was fired? or someone died...

That's what I got too http://prince.org/msg/7/301440 Blue Tuesday 12.1.1987

insert from Org member NightGod My source: Cat Glover

I filmed a behind the scenes video of her modeling shoot last year (the one many of you have seen on youtube), and spent a couple days hanging out with Cat Glover. She is very open and shared some amazing stories with me. This is one:

1987: Prince had never tried Ecstasy, and was curious about it after Cat told him what it felt like. He asked Cat to get him some (it came from her, where the common misconception is that it came from Ingrid). Cat was in LA when Prince made his request. She got some and flew in to MN and was staying at a hotel when Prince's limo showed up. While they were both in her room, Cat suggested Prince take half a dose "because he was so small". He took the full dose and told Cat to wait for him. He rode off in his limo and Cat didn't hear from him until much later.

Prince decided to go to a club while he was tripping. It was here that he met Ingrid Chavez, which eventually led them to Paisley Park. Cat said she didn't think Ingrid knew Prince was tripping on E. Prince called Cat later from the limo and told her about Ingrid. She was riding with him at that point, and the three of them went out to Paisley, making for a historical night in Prince's career.

Even more interesting is her source for where she got the Ecstasy in the first place: Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers

3rdDay

As some one said earlier, it is about the resurrection of Christ. It comes from the Greek word anastasis, which means resurrection.

Its not about the resurrection of Christ at all! You cannot infer the meaning of an entire song from just one word!

It is about, as a couple of people on here have rightly said, Prince's "bad trip" on Ecstacy and his resultant epiphany that God is the important thing in his life.Prince describes himself as being in a club and the he is feeling lonely "have you ever been so lonely" etc and also uninspired "music late, nothing great". He then decides to try something (in this case Ecstacy) "I took a chance" which also relates to "So I danced" (E of course being a "dance drug").

After he takes this "chance" then "Gregory looks just like a ghost" which is a reference to the intoxicating effects - not quite a hallucination, but a distorted image of Gregory.

The girl who "wets her lips to say, We could love for a little while, If you could just learn to smile" is Inrgid. Prince isn't similing, because he's having a hard time with the trip.If you read any of the many accounts of what happened that night, this song precisely fits those events.

Annastesia does mean "resurrection" or "re-birth", the latter being the more relevant here - the re-birth aspect being because this is what led Prince to cancel the Black album and re-discover his faith in God. One of his great songs and also extremely personal. But, as with many Prince lyrics, the word Annastesia works on many levels. Its implying the re-birth by way of his epiphany but also works as a euphemism for Ecstasy and perhaps also for the comforting and assuring words of a woman. Someone also suggested that it could be a play on anasthesia, which is an interesting concept - however, E is not really an anasthetic at all, in fact it heightens the senses, exaggerates them and produces a "rush" and overt sexual feeling, so I'm not sure I agree with that. But its a good idea all the same.

It really is quite clear as to what the meaning of this song is and it is no accident that it appears on Lovesexy which was in itself an entire antithesis and response to the Black Album which he, of course, pulled because of this epiphany and Prince has said as much himself.

Well here goes, i'll give you my understanding of it:

It seems to be about a person who perhaps picks up/meets someone who appears 2 be female but is male(cross dresser), a decision is made to follow thru with whatever & then in a moment of regret decides that this is not what he wanted, & decides 2 become good & behave himself for the lord. So it goes on with him repenting for his sin/s & is forgiven, then carry's on helping spread the word of Jesus.

I think this is the closest Prince ever came 2 perhaps admitting that he had indeed experimented with the same sex, rumours were writhe about his sexuality, they have always been there. When Prince was younger he stayed with Andre Cymone & his fam & it was during this time that it was thought that they did a little bit of sexual experimentation so 2 speak, however these claims have neither been confirmed or denied!

Anyway this is my take on the Anna Stesia which i absolutely love & have danced 2.

Just enjoy the song, it really is quite thought provoking!!!

What on earth??!!! lol lol nuts

The point about "You'd take anyone boy or girl" is simply to imply the depth of Prince's loneliness at that time and also the heightened sexual urges that one experiences on Ecstacy (hence the drug's slang name).

Picking up a cross-dresser!! Really, I mean no harm, but that made me piss my pants with laughter! lol

Lovesexy.... is 1 of my all time fave albums. boogie heart

the sound was a bit complex for those americans & they could not handle the naked Prince pic.

still the album is brilliant, a masterpiece imo.

afaik the europeans loved this fine piece of art, #1 in UK and selling well in Germany and northern Europe too.

imo Lovesexy is a top 5 Prince album, music

maybe even top 3 behind Purple Rain and Sign "O" The Times.

Black album, put togther too quickly, he thought it was 'nothing great'. Felt like pulling the album and recording Lovesexy was a 'chance'. Met IC, she said cheer up and smile more etc. Bad night/ trip (perhaps), found god within a dream.....there you have it. One of my fav's

Between white and black, night and day
Black night seemed like the only way...

So I danced

Music late, nothing great
No way 2 differentiate
I took a chance

Gregory looks just like a ghost
And then a beautiful girl the most
Wets her lips 2 say

"We could live 4 a little while
If U could just learn 2 smile
U and I could fly away, fly away."

i dont understand Anna stesia at all , i need some help . it makes no sense to me

I thought it was about him having some kind of spiritual or emotional crisis and then at the end he kind of feels like he found the answer and is coming out of that - and that the answer was God.

Perhaps Anna was a real person. She was like a drug to him that comforted him!

He uses the words Anna Stesia (he is talking to a women named Anna) as a metaphor. She is like anesthesia making him feel good. "Anna Stesia come to me, talk to me, ravish me, liberate my mind." Later he sings, "Now I understand, God is love, Girls and Boys love God above."
